Mats are made up of a bunch of small tangles at the base of the coat that begin to hook together and tighten/spread over time. They do cause extreme discomfort (think of small clumps of hairs on your own head being pulled 24/7 with nothing you can do about it 😿) and, depending on how close to the skin and how big of an area they cover, could need a dematting brush out or even shaving. Unless the mats are small and far away from the skin, shaving is typically the safest and best way to remove matting. Trying to brush out super tight mats is incredibly painful and can lead to injury since cats have such thin skin! One reason we never use scissors under a mat that's close to the skin, is that those hairs will start to pull the skin up into the mat and the risk of nicking them is greater, the blade used when shaving will flatten the skin as the hair is cut and reduce the odds of injury! 😸
In these kitties' cases (the last 3 are from a different cat), the mats had gotten to the point where they were pulling the hair completely out, leaving behind redness, irritation, and bald spots. To avoid situations like this, I highly recommend regular brushing whether you do it at home (I can give you tips and tricks!) or bring them to me! 😻
