Lawn care tips with our dry and windy spring:

With our dryness and the wind , you may want to fire up your sprinkler system early (at your own risk) or (and we encourage and recommend you to) drag the hose out to water your lawn. while your lawn can go without water for up to a month or so usually before affecting the crown and roots in most cases, the more wind we are getting the more that window shrinks as the wind just sucks the moisture out of everything. The drier your lawn gets, the more recovery time needed to heal and bring out of dormancy.
Here are some things to keep in mind:

The lack of water will force the grass to go or stay dormant (brown color). Although it might not look good, the crown and roots will (in most cases ) remain alive and the leaves will (except for in severe drought and wind conditions) green up when water returns to the lawn. That being said , spring and fall is the best times of the year to promote growth and healing from damage caused by our harsh summers/ winters /foot traffic/pests/pets etc. So now is the best time to to help your lawn recover, but to do that we need your help. We need you to water! Getting out the hose and watering your lawn at least a couple days a week is ideal. Start with watering the areas that look the driest first and give them a good soaking if possible before moving to the rest of your lawn and giving it all a good drink.
Also - have you noticed some of your neighbors already have green lawns and you are envious ? Guess what - they are watering and yours could easily look like this as well! Its really simple -other than the things we are already doing for your lawn, Water is the key and the missing element. Please help us help your lawn by additional watering when possible.

Winter watering in Colorado. Our outdoor shrubs and trees need water year round. Here is a helpful link to the Colorado Botanical Gardens website with some guidelines. https://www.botanicgardens.org/blog/winter-watering-colorado and another good site for information on Colorado lawns is the CSU Extension https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/yard-garden/fall-and-winter-watering-7-211/

Dry air, low soil moisture and fluctuating temperatures are fall and winter characteristics in many areas of Colorado. During extended periods, particularly October through February when there may be little or no snow cover, trees, shrubs and lawn grasses can be damaged if they do not receive supple...

Want to know all about why we do what we do with your lawn? Or why we recommend certain things? Or want a trusted source for info for our area's lawns? Look no further: Colorado State University has done extensive studies on our grass types, soil types, and climate and we trust and follow the advice that has been proven and studied extensively.

Proper watering can promote a deeply rooted, healthier turf. Let grass species and health, soil conditions, and weather conditions dictate irrigation practices, not the number of days between waterings. Mow bluegrass, ryegrass, fescue and wheatgrass to a height of 2 to 3 inches. Buffalo-grass and bl...

Who else is ready for spring? We've been watching the birds frolicking and it's making us want to be outside. It's time to start thinking about getting your yard in shape for summer.

As we approach another winter and people are blowing out their sprinklers it's a good time to remind you that trees need water in the winter. It's a lot less, but they need it. If we go a month without a decent rain or snow (6+ inches) than you need to drag the hoses to your trees on a warmer day and get some water in them. Too many people lose trees during the winter from a lack of moisture.

FREEZE WARNING
Freezing temperatures are in the immediate forecast for tonight and this weekend. If possible - Please take the following steps to help protect your sprinkler system.

If you have an above-ground back flow device- so everyone except customers in Todd Creek. ( Todd creek customers do not have one - Todd Creek customers - please just turn off your sprinkler timer, the rest of your system is below frost line and should be fine through a mild freeze.
Everyone else -
To help mitigate the risk, we recommend that you IMMEDIATELY take the following steps:
1. Turn your sprinkler controller to the OFF position and locate your sprinkler shut off valve inside the house and turn the water off.

2. Locate your above ground backflow device -pictured below. It is often hidden among plants or behind shrubs but is attached to the side of the house.

3. Take an old blanket and wrap it around the exposed pipe. You may want to tie or tape the blanket in place to keep it wrapped snugly around all the pipes and back flow.

4. Cover the blanket wrapped pipe with a heavy duty trash bag (preferably black as it holds more heat) this keeps water from penetrating and will act as an insulation from the cold.

5. Secure the bag tightly over the blanket You can do this with any number of household items such as an old belt, duct tape, wire, string, etc.

Often in the case of mild freezes your system will be fine as is -However, Taking the above steps in most situations will help get you system through a little harder freeze.

After the freeze warning has passed uncover your backflow and turn your sprinkler water and timer back on. Go out to the backflow and do a visual to make sure there is not any damage (you may feel a little bit of water from the pressure seal -this is normal ), However- if there is any damage it will be very obvious as water will spraying out of the unit. If there is damage -shut off the water inside and call a plumber to make any repairs necessary.

This last snow storm certainly helped the drought conditions. But unfortunately it wasn't quite enough. It also put us about 2 weeks behind schedule. We will begins aerations and fertilizer for our lawn care customers as soon as the ground is clear of snow. https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/snowstorms-boost-colorado-snowpack-lessen-drought-conditions-in-ne-parts-of-state?fbclid=IwAR3SQNbjwYEUCuOVmkURff1ukAawyX0epOxjQWtqK_RHNXXBNbSz5jpFYO4

Last weekend’s snowstorm was a boon to drought and snowpack conditions in the parts of Colorado that saw the most snow but was nowhere near to fully breaking the drought that has been prevalent for months across the state.

Happy 2021!
It's early in the year, but it's not too early to start thinking about having a healthy lawn. We are a little concerned about drought this year, but not to worry, there are a few simple things that can be done to help your lawn be it's best. The first thing is aeration! Aeration will break up the hard compacted soil that makes it difficult for water and nutrients to get to the roots where they are needed. We will begin aeration for our lawn care customers in mid March (weather permitting) Along with those aerations we will also be applying a preemergent fertilizer to help get a handle on those w**d seeds that have blown in over the winter. March is also a good time to get that winter mess cleaned up and your shrubs trimmed. Make sure to get on the schedule for a spring clean up. Our phones are open year round for your convenience.
We do have some spaces available for new customers, but those spaces do fill up, so don't hesitate to call for a free estimate for weekly lawn care. We will be posting helpful tips throughout the spring and summer and are always happy to answer any questions you may have to help your lawn look as good as it possibly can.

Wishing each and every one of you a joyous and peaceful holiday season. From our family to yours.

FREEZE WARNING FOR THURSDAY NIGHT 10/22/20 If you have not yet had your system blown out, there are a few things you can do to help protect your system. First - close the valve that is inside your home for your sprinkler system. Second - locate your backflow preventer, it is attached to your house on the outside (see photo below) follow the instructions on the photo. Third - go back downstairs to where you closed the valve, you will need a pitcher or small bucket, and locate the drain valve (usually a small k**b right on the valve) turn the k**b until water comes out, catch the water in the bucket, water will stop coming out after a couple minutes, then turn the k**b back to the closed position.. Fourth - turn off the clock/timer. Finally - call us to get on the schedule to have the rest of the system to be blown out as the above steps will only help to get you through a mild freeze.

Colorado never fails to keep us on our toes. We've had a few calls regarding the weather that is forecast for this week. The temperatures that we are currently seeing do not cause alarm for sprinkler systems. If you are concerned for your system, then the best thing you can do is to shut off the timer on Monday and turn it back on again later in the week. We use the NOAA weather site for our information. https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=39.90066621614397&lon=-104.9392659902117 Feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns. This is also a good time to think about your fall clean up and get on the schedule for that.

A dangerous heat wave is underway across much of the Western U.S. this holiday weekend and critical fire weather conditions are forecast through next Tuesday for portions of the West. Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are possible later today and tonight across parts of the upper Mississipp...

Even though it is only the middle of August, it isn't too early to start thinking of scheduling your fall clean up and shrub trim. Some people like to have it done in 2 phases, some prefer to have it all done at one time once the majority of leaves have dropped. It is a personal preference and we are happy to accommodate whichever your preference is. Also, don't forget to get on the schedule for sprinkler blow out in October.

Isn't this heat great? No? Yeah, we are not too fond of it either. You may have noticed that your lawn may not be growing too well right now. Lawns will go dormant in the heat. There are a couple of things that you can do. One, is to not worry too much about it, add a little extra water and know that once it cools down a bit, it will recover. Or, you can dump lots of extra water on it to help keep it a good green. We are doing what we can for our customers, including skipping mowing when there would be no benefit in doing it. If you see that we have skipped, don't worry, we just don't want to cause any harm to your lawn and will be checking back the next week.
You may also notice that the edges may be getting "crispy" this is because it is much hotter along sidewalks, fences and edging strips. The only thing to help that is to make sure that your sprinklers are getting to the edges.
and, if possible, do a bit if extra hand watering along the edges. If you need any help adjusting for time or coverage, please call us ahead of your lawn care day and we can check those for you and make any adjustments that may be needed while we are there.
