Friends of Retired Greyhounds

Friends of Retired Greyhounds Friends of Retired Greyhounds 501(c)3 Non Profit Greyhound Adoption Organization Friends of Retired Greyhounds works with race kennels across the U.S.

FORgreyhounds was started April 12, 2001 when seven friends met and voted to start an adoption group to help retired racing greyhounds find couches. FORgreyhounds, now Friends of Retired Greyhounds organization’s key mission then and now remains the same. Fast-forward twelve years and Friends of Retired Greyhounds is bigger and more efficient than before. With years of experience under our belts o

f placing greyhounds in their forever and loving homes, the sky is the limit with what we will be able to accomplish in the years to come. to obtain as many retired racers as we are able. We also accept greyhounds from greyhound farms and shelters. The greyhounds are put through a very thorough medical check including: spay/neuter, dental cleaning, full shots, heartworm test, f***l test, micro chipping, and a full physical. Once they are medically cleared, they go to private foster homes until adoption. Our adoption program is the most important piece of the organization. Greyhounds are wonderful dogs, but may not be appropriate for every household. The adoption of a greyhound is a very involved process. FORG works hard to make certain the adoptive home is the right and permanent home for a greyhound, and the greyhound is the best match for the household. FORG works in partnership with each adoptive parent to place the best match with him or her. To begin the process an adopter will fill out an adoption application, which is than sent to our adoption director Lee Simpson, who reviews it and replies back to the applicant within 24 to 48 hours. Lee or one of her adoption coordinators then contacts the adopter and the process begins. The first step in the adoption process is a home visit. During our home visit, we answer any questions an adopter may have, give them necessary information about greyhounds in general and their transition from their role as an athlete to that of a pet and make sure the environment is favorable and safe for the grey. We make sure they have an understanding that a greyhound is a sight hound, that needs to be leashed when not in an enclosed area, and that they have very little body fat so they are not an outside dog (if you’re hot they are hot and if you are cold they are cold). We are also looking at the circumstances and conditions that are necessary for us to complement with an appropriate grey to match those conditions. Once we get a good feel for the dynamics of a household, we begin the process of matching a grey to the adopters’ situation. We will make recommendations of certain greys for an adopter to meet but it will be up to the adopter to find the one that he/she falls in love with. For many, it may the first one they meet. For others they will need to meet many. The timing of all this varies depending upon many circumstances. During normal times, the turnaround time from start to finish, is around two to three weeks. Foster families help our greys get used to a life of full retirement. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that requires a real commitment. A grey comes from the track with no knowledge of a normal pet’s life. The private foster homes keep the greys until they get adopted and teach them the basics of home living. Patient fosters help a grey transition into the outside world and become a good prospective pet. The foster parent is one of the most important people in the greyhound's road to a forever home and happy life. It is one of the most important elements in forming the grey's hopeful future. We have found that foster homes are the best judge of what kind of home is the best fit for their foster dog’s particular needs. The wonderful part of fostering is knowing that you played a tremendous and extremely crucial role in getting a grey ready for its loving and forever home. Fosters really matter, and they make a big difference!

Merry Christmas, everyone!🎄Santa brought EVERYTHING I asked for and more! It’s me, Mac, reporting live from my forever home - where I have SO MANY TOYS! This is a huge improvement from the shelter I was dropped off at. 🐾🎁 My new family says I’m the best gift they’ve ever gotten. Thanks to all of YOU for caring and sharing my story and helping me find them. ❤️

Now, I’ve got one last wish on my Christmas list: can you help my friend Boo (aka Midnight Warrior) find her forever home too? She’s still waiting, and trust me, she’d be the best gift ever for some lucky family. Share her post and spread the love!

Love,
Mac “Professional Toy Tester”

I’m the last foster pup looking for a “foster-to-adopt” spot before Christmas. Could your home be my holiday miracle? 🎄🐕

We are SO grateful! 💖 A huge thank you to everyone who helped, reached out, and sent love and donations for my Little Man, Rory.

He is doing amazingly well after his splenectomy—just look at him! I’m forever grateful for the successful surgery and more time with my boy. Now we’re in the waiting stage for the biopsy results. We will keep you all posted. I’m praying for good news, hoping it’s benign. But no matter what comes next, this little fighter will get whatever care he needs.

Please keep sending your thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes his way and Rory says a huge thank you to everyone as well! 🐾❤️

Many of you know our president, Lee Simpson, and her current dogs, Chandler, Rory and Pablo. Rory and Pablo were part of a sad group of dogs FoRG rescued from Oman, known as Wadi Dogs. Virtually street dogs that are shot on sight by the local police.

Lee is now facing a heartbreaking situation where her "Little Man" as she calls him, Rory. Rory was diagnosed with a serious tumor on his spleen, needing dangerous and immediate surgery to remove his spleen.

Rory did well with the surgery but will require aftercare as well. As you know, vet costs are extremely high and when they are serious and complicated, they cost even more.

The volunteers at FoRG have decided to start a GoFundMe for Lee and Rory, hoping to help defray some of her costs for her "Little Man". All funds received will NOT be associated in any way with Friends of Retired Greyhounds and will be solely for the costs associated with Rory's personal vet care expenses.

Thank you in advance for your help, thoughts and prayers.

Incredible news!!! We made our Colorado Gives goal with a couple of amazing last minute donations. THANK YOU! You helped us raise $16,130 for these amazing dogs. We can’t thank you enough!!

Also, Boo (aka Midnight Warrior) got his wish from Santa early too but he wasn’t too sure about the hat. He gave that back. 🤣 We have only three foster dogs left to make this a real Christmas miracle of having all foster dogs in forever homes by Christmas! Check out Boro, Sully and American Life on our website and make all our dreams come true! 💕🎄

Wow! Thanks to you, we raised an incredible $15,456.79 on Colorado Gives Day between direct donations and the Gives Day page! While we came just shy of our $16,000 goal, your generosity, love, and dedication to these hounds means so much!

Whether you donated, fostered, adopted, or cheered us on, you’re the reason we can help so many hounds find their humans—and their humans find their hounds. Together, you help create those happily-ever-afters, one wagging tail at a time!

We’ve built a wonderful community bound by a shared love for these long-legged goofballs, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

From all of us at FoRG (two- and four-legged alike), thank you for making a difference. We couldn’t do it without you!

We wish each and every one of you a wonderful holiday season and we are looking forward to another great year in 2025!

By the way, Bolt wanted to let you know that he is SO excited that Santa granted his wish early and he has his forever home in time for Christmas! ❤️🐾

With gratitude,

Puma here with an update and a message from FORG’s President! I am still loving my amazing forever home and zooming around faster than ever! Thank you FORG! 🐾❤️ 🥰.

To our wonderful supporters:

As Colorado Gives Day comes to an end, I want to thank everyone that has generously donated to our cause. FORG would not be the group we are without our amazing Adopters, Fosters, and Volunteers.

Tonight you have all joined together to support us and make it possible to help FORG continue our mission of finding forever homes for these wonderful dogs.

We are so close to making this the biggest Colorado gives ever. I am asking one last favor if you have not yet donated please consider donating as little as $10 to help us reach our goal of $16,000 so that we can continue the great work that all of you help us do.

Again, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for everything that you do for us. Without you we would not be the amazing group we are.

Remember me? I’m Bo (formerly Ed) the 10 month old lurcher puppy that came to FORG with a broken leg that had to be amputated. I’m so thankful for all the FORG supporters who helped me get my surgery and find my perfect forever home! Being a tripod hasn’t slowed me down at all! 🥰 I’m one of several special needs FORG pups that needed extra medical care this year.

Help FORG get more dogs like me into their forever homes by making a tax deductible donation for Colorado Gives Day! Three more hours to help us meet our goal. 🥰

Hello, friends! It’s me, Mac with an exciting update! My Christmas wish came true and I am going to my new forever home next week! My friends at FORG said my new family has adopted many times before and I have hit the JACKPOT! I know this is my real forever. ❤️🐾

Before I am ready to get my fresh start I do have some vet needs including some dental work (yuck I hate going to the dentist but they say I’ll feel better). If you’d like to support me and other dogs like me maybe you’d consider donating to FORG for Colorado Gives Day?

I’ll send you an update when I finally get home! Merry Christmas everyone and a special thank you to FORG’s little elves! 🎄💕

G’day mates, it’s Jake here with a quick reminder that it’s Colorado Gives Day! Thanks to everyone who has already donated. 🐾💕

I’m a retired racing greyhound from Australia, living my best life here in Colorado. My mum had a big hole in her heart after her best friend crossed the rainbow bridge two years ago. I got the message and worked with FORG’s friends at Racing 2 Rehome to hop on the next flight. Now, she says her heart feels whole again, and I feel like the luckiest bloke alive lounging around on a cozy sofa and I have a whole basket of my own squeakey toys 🧸!!

Today, I want to tell you about the incredible humans at Friends of Retired Greyhounds (FORG). They helped me find my mum, of course, but they do so much more than just finding forever homes for retired racers and lurchers! This year, they’ve had extra medical expenses for some dogs who needed surgeries, dental work, and other special care before they could start their new lives.

Colorado Gives Day is here, and I’m asking you to dig deep (not into the couch like I do, but into your pockets). A donation to FORG means more wagging tails, more full hearts, and more snoozing on couches across Colorado.

Every dollar makes a difference.

So, what do you say? Let’s give FORG a hand (or a paw) so they can keep doing their amazing work.

It’s been a ruff 24 hours, friends. My name’s Mac, and I’m a 4.5-year-old greyhound who’s a little confused right now. After three years in my home, I was dropped off at the shelter. I’m grateful that the nice people at the shelter called FORG and I’m now settled into a cozy foster home.

I’m hoping for a Christmas miracle to find my TRUE forever family. I asked Santa to bring me a yard to zoom around in and another doggie friend to keep me company.

If you’re looking for a gentle, loyal buddy to make your Christmas magical, I’d love to meet you. Could you be my holiday miracle?

Love,
Mac🎄

Update to answer some questions in comments:
We are located in Colorado and only adopt in Colorado or neighboring states where we have people to do home visits. The owner who dropped Mac off at the shelter has been added to our “Do Not Adopt” list and shared with other greyhound adoption agencies in Colorado. We do not know all the circumstances leading up the relinquishment but are happy he is safe and look forward to finding his forever home. He will be going to get a check up at the vet and won’t be available for immediate adoption, but if you are interested in giving Mac his forever home, please submit an adoption application. 💕🐾

Hi! Roden C. Oyote here but you can call me Road because I love riding shotgun. I’m a Lurcher (greyhound mix) from Nebraska. Turns out the farm life wasn’t for me. “Failed” they said. Luckily enough FORG scooped me up and found a new home for me and let me tell you, it’s a lot more my speed. If this is what failure looks like boy, I’ll take it, this is awesome. If you’ve got a little change in that pocket consider giving to FORG for Colorado Giving day, they do good work. I would but I don’t have any pockets. Catch ya on the road. 🐺

Colorado Gives Day is December 10th but early giving is already open and matching donations are still available!

I am posting this picture of my precious angels Rachel and Latti to show my appreciation and gratitude for the dedicated work and many hours FORG commits themselves to finding loving and furever homes for each of the greyhounds in their care. Rachel was my only hound & I was looking for a special friend for her. I learned her pup, Latti, was in the area, and was looking for her pawfect family!!!! She came for a visit and there was no doubt she belonged with us to complete our little family! They became inseparable! My little angels have enriched my life with purpose and endless affection. They are the “PAWFECT” pets. I wouldn’t trade a moment with my precious angels for the world! They are definitely two of the best things to happen to me!

WoOf-wOof aRF!!!!!!!
My name is Rory and I am here to let everyone know what love looks like? A wagging tail at the door welcoming my mommy home. A roaring happy howling noise when I see her smiling face. Going around and around in circles to let her know I am so happy she is home and that I have missed her so. A paw on her knee, reminding her to come outside and play and that I need a special treat. A soft nuzzle on her cheek after a bad day. A smile a mile wide when she tells me I am her special little man.
FORG made it all HAPPEN that special day so long ago!!!!!!
I am here asking all those greyhound/sighthound/dog-loving friends out there to get involved and support FORG at this time of the year. I would really like you to become part of our team and donate today!!!!!! The hounds of FORG and I are counting on you!!!!!!
