Friends of Retired Greyhounds

Friends of Retired Greyhounds Friends of Retired Greyhounds 501(c)3 Non Profit Greyhound Adoption Organization Friends of Retired Greyhounds works with race kennels across the U.S.

FORgreyhounds was started April 12, 2001 when seven friends met and voted to start an adoption group to help retired racing greyhounds find couches. FORgreyhounds, now Friends of Retired Greyhounds organization’s key mission then and now remains the same. Fast-forward twelve years and Friends of Retired Greyhounds is bigger and more efficient than before. With years of experience under our belts o

f placing greyhounds in their forever and loving homes, the sky is the limit with what we will be able to accomplish in the years to come. to obtain as many retired racers as we are able. We also accept greyhounds from greyhound farms and shelters. The greyhounds are put through a very thorough medical check including: spay/neuter, dental cleaning, full shots, heartworm test, fecal test, micro chipping, and a full physical. Once they are medically cleared, they go to private foster homes until adoption. Our adoption program is the most important piece of the organization. Greyhounds are wonderful dogs, but may not be appropriate for every household. The adoption of a greyhound is a very involved process. FORG works hard to make certain the adoptive home is the right and permanent home for a greyhound, and the greyhound is the best match for the household. FORG works in partnership with each adoptive parent to place the best match with him or her. To begin the process an adopter will fill out an adoption application, which is than sent to our adoption director Lee Simpson, who reviews it and replies back to the applicant within 24 to 48 hours. Lee or one of her adoption coordinators then contacts the adopter and the process begins. The first step in the adoption process is a home visit. During our home visit, we answer any questions an adopter may have, give them necessary information about greyhounds in general and their transition from their role as an athlete to that of a pet and make sure the environment is favorable and safe for the grey. We make sure they have an understanding that a greyhound is a sight hound, that needs to be leashed when not in an enclosed area, and that they have very little body fat so they are not an outside dog (if you’re hot they are hot and if you are cold they are cold). We are also looking at the circumstances and conditions that are necessary for us to complement with an appropriate grey to match those conditions. Once we get a good feel for the dynamics of a household, we begin the process of matching a grey to the adopters’ situation. We will make recommendations of certain greys for an adopter to meet but it will be up to the adopter to find the one that he/she falls in love with. For many, it may the first one they meet. For others they will need to meet many. The timing of all this varies depending upon many circumstances. During normal times, the turnaround time from start to finish, is around two to three weeks. Foster families help our greys get used to a life of full retirement. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that requires a real commitment. A grey comes from the track with no knowledge of a normal pet’s life. The private foster homes keep the greys until they get adopted and teach them the basics of home living. Patient fosters help a grey transition into the outside world and become a good prospective pet. The foster parent is one of the most important people in the greyhound's road to a forever home and happy life. It is one of the most important elements in forming the grey's hopeful future. We have found that foster homes are the best judge of what kind of home is the best fit for their foster dog’s particular needs. The wonderful part of fostering is knowing that you played a tremendous and extremely crucial role in getting a grey ready for its loving and forever home. Fosters really matter, and they make a big difference!

🎶 “This one’s longing for a family, this one’s ready for a home… and will she love you? Yes, indeed!” 🎶

Hi, I’m Ursula! I may share a name with the famous sea witch, but I’m no villain—I’m a sweet, curious little retired racer looking for my happily ever after.

I’m only 1.5 years old and I’m still figuring out this whole life in a home thing, but I’m doing great! So far, I’ve mastered stairs, found my favorite cozy spots to nap, and learned how much I love following my humans around. Oh, and food? It’s my favorite thing ever—I might get a little too excited about it, but I’m working on my table manners!

You can meet me and Ariel (🧜‍♀️) this weekend at the meet-and-greet! We’ll be there, ready to find our forever homes. Come say hi—I’d love to be part of your world! Apply to adopt me today at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org.

🎶 “Look at my face, isn’t it sweet? Don’t you agree it’s the cutest you’ve seen? Wouldn’t you think I’m a girl, a girl who has everything?” 🎶 🧜‍♀️

Hi there, I’m Ariel, a 1.5-year-old greyhound with a heart as big as the sea! While I might seem like I have everything—sweetness, grace, and legs for days—I still need a forever family to make my world complete.

I’m great with kids and I’ll happily keep them entertained with my playful spirit and gentle heart. Cats, though? Let’s just say, “Poor unfortunate souls,” and leave it at that.

So if you’re ready to add a little magic to your life and give me my happily ever after, let’s make it happen. I’m Ariel, and I’m ready to be part of your world! Apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org

Join us for our meet and greet today, Saturday January 11th, at Wonderland Brewing Company from 1-4 PM! This is a fun place to enjoy a brew and learn more about fostering or adopting a greyhound. We have 8 retired racing greyhounds coming in tomorrow who will be available for adoption, including this beautiful brindle girl!

Well behaved dogs are welcome at this event and we plan to be inside since it’s too cold to be outside for long. Hope to see you there!

Hi! I’m Huxley! My friends at FORG said if I show you my cool tricks and adorable smile I’ll find a home in NO time… so here I am to show you how well I can SIT! 🥰

People keep saying I’m just the cutest gentle giant. I’m a brindle lurcher boy who is 3 years and 9 months old and I still have my puppy charm and a big, soft heart to match.

I’ve lived in a home for most of my life, so I know all about being a good boy— I’m housebroken, great with kids, and I’ve lived with cats and small dogs. I adore walks and snuggles.

I don’t know what happened, but my previous family couldn’t care for me any longer so now I’m in a foster home waiting for someone to love me forever. I promise to fill your life with tail wags, cuddles, and so much joy.

Fill out your adoption application today at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org and let’s start the new year together! I’m ready to be your best boy ever! 🥰🐾

HEY, IT’S RORY!

Great news everyone! I just got back from visiting Dr. Martin—you know, the amazing doctor who took that awful tumor out of my tummy. I was a little scared to see him again, but he gave me the BEST news:

✨ NO CANCER! ✨

He even told Mom that my incision looks fantastic, so I finally get to ditch that silly shirt and start playing in the backyard with my brothers again. Woohoo!

Thank you all for your love, donations, and prayers for me and Mom. You’ve helped us so much, and we’re so grateful! Happy New Year and here’s to many more to come! 🥂

Love,
Rory

Merry Christmas, everyone!🎄Santa brought EVERYTHING I asked for and more! It’s me, Mac, reporting live from my forever home - where I have SO MANY TOYS! This is a huge improvement from the shelter I was dropped off at. 🐾🎁 My new family says I’m the best gift they’ve ever gotten. Thanks to all of YOU for caring and sharing my story and helping me find them. ❤️

Now, I’ve got one last wish on my Christmas list: can you help my friend Boo (aka Midnight Warrior) find her forever home too? She’s still waiting, and trust me, she’d be the best gift ever for some lucky family. Share her post and spread the love!

Love,

I’m the last foster pup looking for a “foster-to-adopt” spot before Christmas. Could your home be my holiday miracle? 🎄🐕

Come meet me at the PetCo Meet and Greet tomorrow from 11am-1pm

We are SO grateful! 💖 A huge thank you to everyone who helped, reached out, and sent love and donations for my Little Man, Rory.

He is doing amazingly well after his splenectomy—just look at him! I’m forever grateful for the successful surgery and more time with my boy. Now we’re in the waiting stage for the biopsy results. We will keep you all posted. I’m praying for good news, hoping it’s benign. But no matter what comes next, this little fighter will get whatever care he needs.

Please keep sending your thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes his way and Rory says a huge thank you to everyone as well! 🐾❤️

Many of you know our president, Lee Simpson, and her current dogs, Chandler, Rory and Pablo. Rory and Pablo were part of a sad group of dogs FoRG rescued from Oman, known as Wadi Dogs. Virtually street dogs that are shot on sight by the local police.

Lee is now facing a heartbreaking situation where her "Little Man" as she calls him, Rory. Rory was diagnosed with a serious tumor on his spleen, needing dangerous and immediate surgery to remove his spleen.

Rory did well with the surgery but will require aftercare as well. As you know, vet costs are extremely high and when they are serious and complicated, they cost even more.

The volunteers at FoRG have decided to start a GoFundMe for Lee and Rory, hoping to help defray some of her costs for her "Little Man". All funds received will NOT be associated in any way with Friends of Retired Greyhounds and will be solely for the costs associated with Rory's personal vet care expenses.

Thank you in advance for your help, thoughts and prayers.
