Friends of Retired Greyhounds

Friends of Retired Greyhounds Friends of Retired Greyhounds 501(c)3 Non Profit Greyhound Adoption Organization Friends of Retired Greyhounds works with race kennels across the U.S.

FORgreyhounds was started April 12, 2001 when seven friends met and voted to start an adoption group to help retired racing greyhounds find couches. FORgreyhounds, now Friends of Retired Greyhounds organization’s key mission then and now remains the same. Fast-forward twelve years and Friends of Retired Greyhounds is bigger and more efficient than before. With years of experience under our belts o

f placing greyhounds in their forever and loving homes, the sky is the limit with what we will be able to accomplish in the years to come. to obtain as many retired racers as we are able. We also accept greyhounds from greyhound farms and shelters. The greyhounds are put through a very thorough medical check including: spay/neuter, dental cleaning, full shots, heartworm test, fecal test, micro chipping, and a full physical. Once they are medically cleared, they go to private foster homes until adoption. Our adoption program is the most important piece of the organization. Greyhounds are wonderful dogs, but may not be appropriate for every household. The adoption of a greyhound is a very involved process. FORG works hard to make certain the adoptive home is the right and permanent home for a greyhound, and the greyhound is the best match for the household. FORG works in partnership with each adoptive parent to place the best match with him or her. To begin the process an adopter will fill out an adoption application, which is than sent to our adoption director Lee Simpson, who reviews it and replies back to the applicant within 24 to 48 hours. Lee or one of her adoption coordinators then contacts the adopter and the process begins. The first step in the adoption process is a home visit. During our home visit, we answer any questions an adopter may have, give them necessary information about greyhounds in general and their transition from their role as an athlete to that of a pet and make sure the environment is favorable and safe for the grey. We make sure they have an understanding that a greyhound is a sight hound, that needs to be leashed when not in an enclosed area, and that they have very little body fat so they are not an outside dog (if you’re hot they are hot and if you are cold they are cold). We are also looking at the circumstances and conditions that are necessary for us to complement with an appropriate grey to match those conditions. Once we get a good feel for the dynamics of a household, we begin the process of matching a grey to the adopters’ situation. We will make recommendations of certain greys for an adopter to meet but it will be up to the adopter to find the one that he/she falls in love with. For many, it may the first one they meet. For others they will need to meet many. The timing of all this varies depending upon many circumstances. During normal times, the turnaround time from start to finish, is around two to three weeks. Foster families help our greys get used to a life of full retirement. Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience that requires a real commitment. A grey comes from the track with no knowledge of a normal pet’s life. The private foster homes keep the greys until they get adopted and teach them the basics of home living. Patient fosters help a grey transition into the outside world and become a good prospective pet. The foster parent is one of the most important people in the greyhound's road to a forever home and happy life. It is one of the most important elements in forming the grey's hopeful future. We have found that foster homes are the best judge of what kind of home is the best fit for their foster dog’s particular needs. The wonderful part of fostering is knowing that you played a tremendous and extremely crucial role in getting a grey ready for its loving and forever home. Fosters really matter, and they make a big difference!

Hi, I’m Sis! I’m a nearly 5-year-old lurcher (greyhound mix) with a big heart, a big smile, and the cutest fuzzy coat with all sorts of pretty colors. I also have a love for belly rubs! Seriously, I will flop over at a moment’s notice—hope you’re ready!

I’ve got a little extra pep in my step, so a yard would be perfect for my zoomies and silly playtime. But when I’m not running around, I love to stretch out and sunbathe—unless it’s winter, then you’ll find me happily lounging on a snowbank! Cold weather, ice patches, and frosty mornings make me one happy pup.

I’m currently living with some cats, and we’re figuring things out together. As for other dogs? No, thank you! I’d much rather be your one and only. But if you’re up for walks, I’m all in! I love sniffing around and taking in the world.

If you’re looking for a fuzzy, sun-loving, snow-rolling, belly-rub-demanding best friend with a winning smile, I just might be your girl!

Colorado friends, please apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org! ❤️🐾

Hi, Colorado! I’m Sweetie!

True to my name, I’m the ultimate cuddlebug-if I could spend all day with my head in your lap, I would! I’m a gentle, loving girl who’s still learning about the big world. New places can be a little scary, but with a confident dog friend by my side, I’m brave enough to take it all on.

I’m 2 years old, potty trained, walk beautifully on a leash, and love car rides. No crates for me, please-I much prefer the couch! A quieter home with older kids or occasional grandkids would be best since loud noises make me a little jumpy. I LOVE car rides and walks in the park followed by MORE couch snuggles. 🥰

If you’re looking for a sweet snuggle buddy, I’m your girl. Let’s meet! Apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgrehounds.org

Hello there Colorado, I’m Pretty Mamma, a 3.5 year old retired racing greyhound with a little secret… I may look like your typical hound, but deep down, I’m actually a guard dog in disguise.

Most greyhounds are known for their silence, but me? I want to keep my family alerted to new things and people in our space. A new object in the yard? I’ll alert the team. The fridge door opening for the first time? Unbelievable! The neighbor looking over the fence? ‼️ 🚨 ‼️ Someone has to keep track of these things, and I take my job very seriously. A bark or two lets the family know to pay attention.

But here’s the other thing about me—I am also incredibly sweet. Once I’ve done my daily security check, I go right back to being the perfect house guest. Quiet as a mouse! No accidents, no mischief, just soft eyes and a gentle heart. I can be a little shy at first, but once I know you’re part of my circle, I will soak up every bit of love you have to offer and give lots of kisses in return. I love other dogs and would do great in a home with a canine companion. I’m also doing great on a leash and just learned the stairs!

So, if you’re looking for a greyhound who will watch over your home with love and then snuggle up beside you once the job is done, Pretty Mamma is ready to report for duty! Apply to adopt at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org.

Oh hey, hi, hello! I’m Larkins, a two-year-old greyhound with the heart of a Labrador, or so they tell me! I just think life is fun, and I want to be right in the middle of it! Toys? Love them. Walks? Absolutely. Finding exciting new things to carry around the house (even if they’re not technically mine)? Well… I just like to keep life interesting!! 🤣 They also say I’m an absolutely gorgeous and rare, white and blue brindle girl, whatever that means! 😊

I’ve got this whole home-life thing down-I do stairs, I sleep in my crate (with my beloved little ram toy), and I’m great with other dogs. My foster says I’m a total sweetheart, but fair warning: if you get too close, I will wrap my neck around you in a hug. That’s just how I roll.

I’m looking for a Colorado family who loves adventure, belly rubs, and doesn’t mind me carrying around random household things like a sock or the tv remote. If that sounds like you, we might just be perfect together! Apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org

Hi, I’m Kelce! I’m a sweet, 5 year old, retired brood mama. Guess what? I was a firefighter for a day, so I am officially ready to save you…from a life without a greyhound!

I can be a little shy at first, but once I trust you, I’ll happily soak up all the head and neck scratches you’ve got. My favorite parts of the day are mealtime, treat time, and finding the perfect spot in my favorite bed. I’m a gentle, patient girl—even with tiny humans who love to give big hugs.

When I get really excited, my tail does a little helicopter spin! 🥰 If you need a sweet, easygoing girl to bring love to your home, I’m ready for the job! Apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org

Greetings, Colorado! I’m Queen, a 2 year old lurcher of great elegance and charm. You met my beautiful sister, Princess, yesterday! Just like her, I love to be close to my people-preferably curled up on them. Yes, I am a very sweet lap dog.😊

When I’m not overseeing my kingdom from the comfort of your lap, I enjoy tossing my toys in the air, pouncing with delight, and keeping a watchful eye on the backyard squirrels (they are very suspicious). I get along well with dogs and people, and while I haven’t met any feline subjects, I don’t seem to have a strong prey drive. Older, gentle children would suit my royal court just fine.

I could thrive as either the sole ruler of my castle or with a canine companion. Apartment life? Possibly, as long as I get play dates and walks.

If you’re ready to welcome this queen into your kingdom, submit your royal decree-also known as an adoption application-at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org. I shall be waiting!

Hello, Colorado! I’m Princess, and I just know my fairy tale ending is out there! I’m a 2.5 year old lurcher (greyhound mix). At first, I was a little shy, but now that I’ve adjusted to my new kingdom, my true, sparkly self is shining through!

I love being around my people- big ones, little ones, other dogs, even those furry kitty creatures. Being with my family is my favorite thing in the world! Crates? No, thank you! I’d much rather be curled up on the couch like the royalty I am or snuggled up in bed, dreaming sweet princess dreams.

I’m also a bit of an adventurer! I can do stairs, hop over gates (I must be where the action is), and I love a good backyard stroll. I’m learning the magic of leash walking, too.

The only thing missing from my fairy tale? My perfect family! Could you be my happily ever after? Apply to adopt me at friendsofretiredgreyhounds.org.

Hey there, folks! It’s me, Buddy, the 10-year-old lurcher who refuses to act his age. I’ve been waiting patiently for my perfect home, so If you think you could be my forever family, please reach out to Lee directly to learn more about how you can adopt me (720) 675-5975! I’ll be here, dreaming big and running fast until you find me! 🐾🥰

Well, hello there! My name’s Joy, and if you’ve got a soft spot for sweet, chill hounds with the best little eyebrows you’ve ever seen, then I might just be your perfect match! I’m a two year old girl and I’ve been settling in beautifully with kids, cats, other dogs and even mastered the stairs. My foster family says I’m an easy guest and live up to my name! I’m just full of joy to be here, soaking up love, snacks, and all the best napping spots. You can see me this afternoon on Petline9 at 4:50 for my television debut! 😊🐾

One more thing and it’s important!! I wouldn’t be here without my amazing foster family, and FORG can’t find as many homes for dogs like me without more people like them. Four of my greyhound friends are arriving tomorrow, and we still need at least one more foster to welcome them. If you’ve ever thought about fostering, now’s the time. Trust me, we’re worth it- just look into my gorgeous eyes and try and tell me no! 😊

Howdy, Colorado! My name is Glass, and I’m a 10-plus-year-old lurcher looking for a special long-term foster for life- a forever house where I can really enjoy retired life. I’ve worked hard my whole life, but now I’m ready for a soft bed, a full bowl, and a person to follow around.

I love people and will stick by your side, always hoping for a pet or a kind word. I can still enjoy a nice leisurely walk, but mostly, I just want to be with you and lounge around.

If you’ve got room in your heart and home for a loyal old soul who’s ready to settle down, I’d love to meet you. Let’s make my retirement the best ever.

Since I’m such a special boy, if you think you might be the right place for me to spend my golden years, please reach out directly to my friend Lee at (720) 675-5975.
