Some of you may know that Milkw**d is an important pollinator. This w**d has deep roots that help it survive both fire and drought, if you have river-bottom ground you have likely seen this w**d in that area. It is also common in ditches/roadside, meadows, and waste areas.

Some of the effects that milkw**d can have on your livestock are cardiotoxic effects, respiratory, digestive, nervous system effects, colic and diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures. This plant is most toxic during rapid growth and if consumed in large quantities. While this is a toxic plant animals generally tend to stay away from it.

Read the articles below to learn more about this w**d.

With the lingering heat there are a few things to be aware of if your livestock end up off water for an extended period of time. You may wonder what really happens when an animal gets dehydrated. When an animal becomes dehydrated sodium levels accumulate in tissues and in the brain. Once an animal is dehydrated and then given too much water, the water rushes to their brain where the salt is accumulated. This can then cause seizures and even death.

While the animal does need to drink water immediately, it needs to be in small amounts.

It’s hot and getting hotter. Each summer in Texas, farmers and ranchers are on the gambling side of the weather, hoping for an appropriate level of rainfall. Although most of the state is not currently experiencing drought-like conditions, the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TV...

Spring has sprung! Which means…vaccination season is upon us as well!

If you are wondering what vaccinations your horse should receive, the answer is — There are no “one size fits all” vaccine recommendations. A veterinarian who knows your horse and your management system is your best resource to recommend what vaccines your equine friend should receive and with what frequency!

While vaccination does not prevent disease in all circumstances, a good immunization protocol minimizes the risk of infection and remains an essential component of responsible horse ownership. A vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for a yearly check-up of your equine friend and a great way to catch any health concerns early.

If you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling your horse's vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

Are you wondering what floating teeth is about? Why should you consider getting a dental for your horse?

Horses' teeth continually erupt out of the horses' jaw throughout their lifetime. Horses often develop uneven wear on their teeth causing the chewing surface of the cheek teeth to become uneven, limiting grinding efficiency. Additionally their upper jaw is wider than their lower jaw, allowing very sharp points to develop on the cheek side of the upper teeth and the tongue side of the lower teeth, which can cause uncomfortable ulcers on the inside of their cheeks or tongue. Common signs that your horse may need to have its teeth floated are:
- dropping hay or grain; quidding
- drooling while eating
- weight loss
- decreased performance; uncomfortable with the bit
Less common signs are:
- sour smelling breath
- swelling along the jaw
- cribbing

The process of floating the horses' teeth is to grind away the sharp edges that develop over time as well as correct any misalignments. This will help maintain a balanced, flat chewing surface so that they are able to grind their feed well and be more comfortable.

We recommend having your horses' teeth floated routinely every 1-2 years depending on diet, use, the severity of any abnormalities and your horses' history.

Happy Halloween!🎃

Trichomoniasis or "Trich" is a disease of the reproductive tract in beef and dairy cattle, although more common in the beef industry. It is typically transmitted under natural breeding conditions. Bulls harbor this pathogen and can remain infected indefinitely. Once introduced in the reproductive tract of the cow this organism can cause early embryonic death and infertility. Typically, Trich outbreaks occur in communal grazing associations. There is no effective treatment for Trich in cattle. This drives states to require testing upon entry for breeding aged bulls. Did you know that there are two regions in Montana that are designated as Trich areas?

Are you considering buying a milk cow? As this trend is becoming more popular, there are many factors to consider when purchasing a dairy cow. Things such as breed, amount of daily milk production, how to feed your cow, water intake, pasture management, corral set-up, shelter, expenses, veterinary client patient relationship (herd health), and options to haul your cow if needed are all things to think about.

"Buying and Feeding the Family Milk Cow" an article by dairy extension at Utah State outlines many of these concerns and is an educational read on dairy cows.

Do you ever wonder if you are using the right sized needle for the job? Wonder no more! This article explains what factors are important to consider for vaccinating and treating your cattle or other farm animals.

We recommend using an 18x5/8 needle to vaccinate calves that are under 9 months old, 16x5/8 for vaccinating cows subcutaneously, 16x3/4 for vaccinating bulls, and 18x1.5 for intramuscular injections on cows for hormone shots.

Depending on the size of the animal, viscosity of the product and administration protocols, a variety of needles might be needed. Here’s some guidelines to help decide.

Thank you to Samantha Ferrat for playing such a big role in advocating for agriculture and education through Broadwater County 4-H, Montana Farmers Union, and the US Cattleman’s Association. This National Farmers Union flyer has great information that helps us better understand our food systems. This image shows what we pay in the store vs what our farmers and ranchers profit. Remember, always thank your local farmers and ranchers for the countless hours they put in to ensure that YOU are fed and able to safely consume high quality foods. 🥩🥓🍳🧈🌽🥬🥛🍯

Do you have a nagging or lingering issue in your horse? A sore back? Are they stiff and arthritic?

Acupuncture is a modality used to stimulate the body by interacting with the nervous system via needles to alleviate pain and restore homeostasis.

Dr. Petz completed her certification for Acupuncture through CuraCore. CuraCore is a science-based acupuncture program. We are excited to offer acupuncture as a complimentary treatment for any number of the issues or to fine tune your horse.

Brucellosis is a contagious zoonotic disease that generally affects elk, bison, and cattle and is caused by the organism Brucella abortus. As the name suggests this disease causes premature birth/abortions in animals. If another pregnant animal comes in contact with an infected abortion they too can contract the disease. Humans can become infected with brucellosis. We are exposed through birth fluids and raw milk consumption.

In order to protect people and cattle the state of Montana requires that breeding aged cattle who reside in and around the DSA must be brucellosis vaccinated. A subset of animals that reside in the Designated Surveillance Area (DSA) are tested for brucellosis via blood sample as in this video. In 2021, there were 94,966 cows tested for brucellosis within the DSA.

Not a Hollywood smile yet, but we can help! Did you know that your horse could benefit from a dental float? Correct alignment from a dental float can help your horse grind, chew, and digest more efficiently. It can also help combat other issues such as rapid weight loss/inability to maintain a healthy weight. It can improve their performance and feed utilization, prolong their lives, and help make them more comfortable.
