Some of you may know that Milkw**d is an important pollinator. This w**d has deep roots that help it survive both fire and drought, if you have river-bottom ground you have likely seen this w**d in that area. It is also common in ditches/roadside, meadows, and waste areas.

Some of the effects that milkw**d can have on your livestock are cardiotoxic effects, respiratory, digestive, nervous system effects, colic and diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures. This plant is most toxic during rapid growth and if consumed in large quantities. While this is a toxic plant animals generally tend to stay away from it.

Read the articles below to learn more about this w**d.

With the lingering heat there are a few things to be aware of if your livestock end up off water for an extended period of time. You may wonder what really happens when an animal gets dehydrated. When an animal becomes dehydrated sodium levels accumulate in tissues and in the brain. Once an animal is dehydrated and then given too much water, the water rushes to their brain where the salt is accumulated. This can then cause seizures and even death.

While the animal does need to drink water immediately, it needs to be in small amounts.

It’s hot and getting hotter. Each summer in Texas, farmers and ranchers are on the gambling side of the weather, hoping for an appropriate level of rainfall. Although most of the state is not currently experiencing drought-like conditions, the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TV...

Spring has sprung! Which means…vaccination season is upon us as well!

If you are wondering what vaccinations your horse should receive, the answer is — There are no “one size fits all” vaccine recommendations. A veterinarian who knows your horse and your management system is your best resource to recommend what vaccines your equine friend should receive and with what frequency!

While vaccination does not prevent disease in all circumstances, a good immunization protocol minimizes the risk of infection and remains an essential component of responsible horse ownership. A vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for a yearly check-up of your equine friend and a great way to catch any health concerns early.

If you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling your horse's vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

Are you wondering what floating teeth is about? Why should you consider getting a dental for your horse?

Horses' teeth continually erupt out of the horses' jaw throughout their lifetime. Horses often develop uneven wear on their teeth causing the chewing surface of the cheek teeth to become uneven, limiting grinding efficiency. Additionally their upper jaw is wider than their lower jaw, allowing very sharp points to develop on the cheek side of the upper teeth and the tongue side of the lower teeth, which can cause uncomfortable ulcers on the inside of their cheeks or tongue. Common signs that your horse may need to have its teeth floated are:
- dropping hay or grain; quidding
- drooling while eating
- weight loss
- decreased performance; uncomfortable with the bit
Less common signs are:
- sour smelling breath
- swelling along the jaw
- cribbing

The process of floating the horses' teeth is to grind away the sharp edges that develop over time as well as correct any misalignments. This will help maintain a balanced, flat chewing surface so that they are able to grind their feed well and be more comfortable.

We recommend having your horses' teeth floated routinely every 1-2 years depending on diet, use, the severity of any abnormalities and your horses' history.
