Mentally fit or physically fit

It's c**t starting season and everyone is sending out their young stock or climbing aboard to start their future partners. I'd like to know for the trainers and owners what is more important: mental fitness or physical fitness. Do we stress the number and length of rides that each horse gets? Or do we focus on quality of education that the horse gets?

Here's my thoughts keeping in mind that the focus is on the first 30-60 days of their career. A horse needs to be fit enough to complete the tasks that we are asking of them. But my main focus is training the horse to learn. They should know how to respond to pressure and seek softness and release. They should know how to stay between your legs and reins. They should know how to address new things. We, as humans, understand that you don't get up and start running 10 miles a day to prep for a marathon at the end of the month. I feel that stressing time in the saddle over quality of training experiences is a sacrifice of long term goals in favor of immediate "results."

What do you want to see in a young horse's first experiences? Do we stress that they are ridden 5-7 days a week to be sure that time is being put in and they are physically fit? Or is mental preparation more important?

Great weekend at the Shawnee Horse Sale. The c**ts were fantastic on their first trip to town, the sale ran well, many friends (old and new) were there, looking forward to updates from the buyers!

Weanlings! Don't forget to give your c**ts a trusty old babysitter when you wean this fall. These c**ts all get to live with the noble Grumpy to ease the transition from foal to adolescent equine. Without a broke, older gelding, c**ts will establish a Lord of the Flies hierarchy and that will make everything from halter-breaking to starting under saddle more difficult.

It's halter-breaking time! These weanlings are cruising through their first steps as broke horses.
