Today was an amazing day doing what I love!

Today I worked on a 5 year old mare named River who had foaled earlier this week. I was called out because she was refusing to eat grain and dropping balls of grass. Upon the first glance I couldn’t find anything that would cause her to not want to eat. I proceeded with a routine float and taking down some mini hooks on her lower 11 molars. When I reached back to make sure the hooks were worn down, I felt something off. I thought she had something stuck in her gums behind her tooth. I gave it a slight pull and this 12.5 inch piece of wire came out of her throat! I believe the bottom of the U was down in her throat with the points at the top of the throat. Needless to say she was instantly more comfortable! I’m so glad I was able to solve this mystery and make her happy and healthy again!

An awesome day helping horses😁

Recently graduated student Kayleigh Best EqDt assisted Dr. Hyde in a complete dental maintenance with a premolar extraction in a retired horse at Day's End Rescue. Classmate Jordan Meadley EqDt also joined in on providing dentals on the "feral" recent arrivals. Working on horses that are only partly halter-broke can be challenging! It is all about TEAMWORK.... The Interns were very interested and even helped hold a few of the trained horses.

Today I worked at Days End Horse Rescue in Lisbon MD. I got the opportunity to extract a lower cheek tooth under the supervision of Dr. Hyde. The tooth was wedge shaped and had over time shifted out of alignment with the other cheek teeth. This created a diastema( a space between the teeth) that was able to trap food leading to periodontal disease that loosened to tooth. This mare will now be more comfortable and has a lower risk of an infection spreading!
