❄️ Wellness Wednesday: Keep Your Cat Cozy & Safe This Winter! 🐱

As winter settles in, it’s important to adjust your cat’s care to keep them warm, healthy, and comfortable. Here are a few quick tips for winter wellness:

🧣 Warmth: Provide cozy spots for your cat to snuggle in, away from drafts. Heated pads and soft blankets work wonders!

🍽️ Food & Water: Monitor their food intake (some cats may eat more in cold weather) and ensure fresh water is always available to prevent dehydration.

🚪 Limit Outdoor Time: Keep outdoor adventures brief and monitor for frostbite or other cold-related issues. If they go out, wipe their paws to remove harmful salts or chemicals.

🧼 Grooming: Brush long-haired cats regularly to prevent matting, and keep an eye on dry skin from indoor heating.

⚠️ Holiday Hazards: Be mindful of toxic plants like poinsettias, as well as small ornaments, tinsel, and ribbons that could be dangerous.

🔥 Space Heaters & Fireplaces: If you use space heaters or have a fireplace, ensure your cat can’t get too close or burn themselves. Some cats love to curl up near warmth, but always monitor their safety around these heating sources.

As always, if you notice any changes in your cat’s behavior or health, reach out to us for advice. Keep your kitty warm, safe, and happy this winter! 🐾❤️

❄️🐾Medical Monday: Why Winter is the Perfect Time to Adopt a Pet! 🐾❄️

Winter isn't just a time for cozy blankets and hot cocoa—it’s also a great time to welcome a new furry friend into your home! 🏠❤️ Whether you’re working from home, taking time off during the holidays, or just looking for a snuggle buddy, this season offers a wonderful opportunity to adopt a pet.

Here’s why winter adoption can be so rewarding:

💞 More Time to Bond: With the holidays and winter schedules, many of us have more time at home. It’s a great opportunity to give a new pet the attention and training they need to feel comfortable and loved.

🐾 A Cozy New Companion: Cold, dark days are the perfect excuse to snuggle up with your new best friend. From fluffy pups to purring kittens, there’s nothing like a pet to keep you warm and happy this season.

🐕 🐈 Less Stress on Pets: Winter adoption gives animals a calm and low-stress environment as they adjust to their new home—plus, it’s often quieter at shelters this time of year, meaning less competition for the animals.

If you’re considering adopting this winter, visit Oregon Humane Society or Cat Adoption Team to find your new best friend! 🏡❤️

Adoption isn’t just about giving an animal a home—it’s about giving them a chance to thrive and share their love. So, let’s make this winter a season of new beginnings for both you and a shelter pet!

Oregon's winters weather can affect your dog’s health and well-being. Here’s how to keep your dogs safe and comfortable:

Provide Warm Bedding:
Ensure your dog has a warm, draft-free place to sleep, preferably indoors. Use blankets or a raised dog bed to keep them cozy. If they sleep outside, provide an insulated doghouse with a flap or door.

Limit Time Outdoors:
While many dogs love exploring outside, cold temperatures can still lead to discomfort or cold stress. Limit their outdoor time during early mornings and nights when it’s coldest.

Protect Their Paws:
Cold surfaces can harm your dog’s paw pads. Use paw balm to protect their feet or consider dog booties if they’ll be walking on particularly cold or icy ground.

Watch for Cold Stress Signs:
Keep an eye out for shivering, whining, lethargy, or curling up tightly—these may indicate your dog is too cold. Bring them inside if they show any of these signs.

Stay Hydrated:
Dehydration isn’t just a summer issue! Heating systems can dry out the air, so make sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water.

Adjust Grooming Practices:
Avoid shaving your dog in winter, as their coat provides natural insulation. Regular brushing can help maintain a healthy coat that traps warmth.

Beware of Toxins:
Antifreeze is just as dangerous for dogs as it is for cats. Keep it out of reach and clean spills immediately. Additionally, keep holiday decorations and foods like chocolate and raisins away from your pet.

Bundle Up if Needed:
Short-haired breeds, puppies, and senior dogs may benefit from a sweater or coat to help retain body heat during walks. Make sure it fits well and doesn’t restrict movement.

By following these tips, you can ensure your pets stay safe and happy throughout the cooler months. ❤️

🎄🚨 Pet Parents, Beware of Toxic Holiday Plants! 🚨🎄

As the holiday season fills our homes with festive cheer, it's important to remember that some of our favorite decorations can be harmful to our furry friends. Poinsettias, mistletoe, holly, lilies and Christmas cherries are popular holiday plants, which can be toxic to pets if ingested. 🌿🐾

👉 Symptoms of poisoning can include:
- Vomiting
- Drooling
- Diarrhea
- Lethargy

If your pet has ingested any part of these plants, contact your vet immediately! While poinsettias and mistletoe are not usually life-threatening, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. 🐶🐱

Keep your pets safe by placing these festive plants out of reach or opting for pet-friendly holiday decor instead! 🎅❤️

🐱🎄Wellness Wednesday: Managing Feline Stress & Anxiety During the Holidays 🎄🐱

The holiday season is a time for family, fun, and festivities—but for your cat, it can also bring added stress and anxiety. With changes in routine, guests coming and going, and the hustle and bustle of holiday decorations, many cats can feel overwhelmed. 🐾

Here are some vet-approved tips to help your feline friend stay calm and comfortable during the holiday season:

1. Create a Safe, Quiet Space: Designate a quiet, cozy area where your cat can retreat when they need a break from the noise and excitement. This space should have their bed, favorite toys, and access to food and water, so they can feel secure and relaxed. ♨️

2. Stick to Their Routine: Cats thrive on routine. Try to keep feeding, playtime, and cuddle sessions as consistent as possible to minimize stress. A predictable routine will help your cat feel more in control, even during the chaos of the holidays. 💞

3. Introduce New Things Gradually: Whether it’s a new guest, a Christmas tree, or holiday decorations, sudden changes can be stressful for your cat. Introduce new items or situations slowly and give your cat plenty of time to adjust. If you’re setting up a tree, consider waiting until your cat is in another room to minimize surprise or anxiety. 🎁 🎄

4. Maintain Normal Exercise and Play: Engage your cat in regular playtime to release pent-up energy and reduce anxiety. Interactive toys like feather wands or laser pointers can help distract your cat from holiday stress and provide a bonding experience. 🪶🪄

5. Avoid Overstimulating Your Cat: While it’s tempting to include your cat in holiday festivities, too much attention from guests or being surrounded by unfamiliar faces can cause stress. Be mindful of how much interaction your cat is getting—allow them to come to you on their own terms. 🚷

Holiday Stress Tip: If your cat shows signs of severe anxiety, like excessive hiding, destructive behavior, or changes in appetite or litter box habits, consider reaching out to your vet. They can recommend additional strategies or medications to help your kitty through the holiday season.

By taking steps to create a calm, predictable environment, you can help your cat enjoy the season just as much as you do! 🎁🐾

🧣 Medical Monday: Keep Your Dog Safe & Warm This Winter! ❄️

Winter walks are a great way to keep your dog active, but the cold, snow, and ice can be tough on their paws and bodies. 🐾💨

That’s why protective gear and clothing are so important during the chilly months! Here's how you can help keep your pup warm and safe while out for a walk:

🧥 Winter Jackets or Sweaters: Small or short-haired breeds, in particular, can feel the cold more than others. A well-fitted winter coat or sweater helps maintain body heat and keeps them comfortable.

🧤 🥾Paw Protection: Ice, salt, and snow can cause irritation to your dog’s paws. Consider using booties to protect their feet or apply a paw balm to prevent cracking and dryness.

⚡ Reflective Gear: With shorter days, visibility can be an issue. Reflective vests, leashes, or collars help keep you both safe, especially during early morning or evening walks.

❄️ Keep Walks Short & Sweet: If the temperature is extremely low, it's best to shorten your walk to avoid frostbite or other cold-related injuries. Pay attention to your dog’s behavior—if they start lifting their paws or shivering, it’s time to head back inside!

👂 Ear Care: Long-eared dogs like Cocker Spaniels or Dachshunds can be more susceptible to frostbite. Keep their ears dry and free from snow buildup. You can also use ear coverings or a doggy scarf to keep them warm.

Protect your dog this winter so you both can enjoy those snowy adventures safely. If you're ever unsure about what's best for your pet’s winter care, we’re here to help!

Stay warm, stay safe, and keep those tails wagging! 🐕💙
