Please have patience with us this week as we navigate through multiple staff illnesses. The nasty viral infections going around have affected several staff members and we will be short staffed this week. We will do our best to accommodate our clients, but please be aware we may need to refer elsewhere due to staff shortages. Thank you for your understanding during this challenging viral season. Be well and stay healthy.

Librela Update

The Doctors at Lake Side Animal Hospital wanted to inform our clients with regard to recent information on Librela and new concerns released by the FDA regarding Librela injections used to treat osteoarthritis pain in dogs. Librela is a once a month injectable pain management medication.

Librela is a class of medication known as monoclonal antibody. It is used to reduce nerve growth factor which is released in higher quantities in patients with osteoarthritis. Nerve growth factor is a protein in dogs that regulates pain. Librela has been used in Europe since 2020, and was FDA approved for use in the United States in May of 2023. The drug monitoring agencies for both regions have been actively collecting information about Librela since its release for widespread use.

At Lake Side Animal Hospital, we have been administering this medication to many of our arthritic patients for over a year, and our patients typically do quite well on this medication. However, we have seen a few cases that have developed the side effects of increased thirst and urination, and occasionally urinary tract infections. The significant, more concerning side effects that have been reported more recently to the FDA (which can include significant neurological issues) have not been noted in our canine patient population at LSAH. We are continuing to monitor this situation very closely and carefully.

We, at LSAH, feel that this medication can benefit a specific group of our patients. However, each patient needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if they are an appropriate candidate for this medication. We will continue to be diligent in monitoring the FDA recommendations regarding continued use of Librela.

For patients who have been taking this medication successfully and experiencing its benefits, we do not currently have any recommendations to discontinue it. However, we would be happy to discuss concerns with individual pet owners and determine if continued use is appropriate for each individual case.

As with any medication, Librela is not appropriate for every patient. We will continue to determine eligibility for each patient to receive this medication based on their symptoms, overall health status, and any underlying conditions that may preclude them from being a candidate to receive Librela injections.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office.

Anxiety, Stress and Fearful Behaviors are very real in veterinary medicine. And, we see a lot of it! Over the years, we have changed our approach to these challenging behaviors. Trust us when we say, it’s no fun for us or your pet when they react so adversely. Safety must come first for the staff and your pet. There are things we can do and recommend to help decrease your pet’s stress levels during office visits. Muzzles and Medications are not a bad or negative thing. Check out The Muzzle Up! Project
