ʟᴇᴛꜱ ᴛᴀʟᴋ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴘᴀᴛɪᴇɴᴄᴇ....

I see it posted pretty regular on different FB groups asking how to teach a c**t or even a grown horse to stand quiet.

Simple answer? Hobbles.

Yes hobbles. Ideally if a horse is started as a 2 or 3 year old and is hobble broke and never learns to paw or bounce around you never have the problem. However hobbles can absolutely work at any age of life!

We hobble break ours as 2 year olds. Start by hobbling in a round pen or arena and hold them to let them figure it out. Then I start hobbling and just leaving them loose for a little bit to figure out how to handle their feet. From there they get hobbles when tied. I like to hobble mine tied to the trailer away from home as babies as well to keep them from pawing the side of my trailer.

This is truly the easiest way to teach one to stand quietly and also is great if they ever do get in a bind and get their feet tangled up they will usually stand and wait till you come undo them.

We have been striving to bring top quality prospects to the 646 Ranch and I think we are off to a good start! The oldest babies out of our mares are 3 this year and riding nice!

This is a filly by Catty Hawk out of OJs Tess (Taffy)

OJs Tess was our anything you need to do horse. Skip won close to $100k heeling on her, taffy and Shelby headed on her and Shelby ran barrels and breakawayed on her as well!

We are very excited to see this fillies future!

Never be to proud to ask for help....

This is what makes our program unique, this is one of my (Shelby) barrel horses. Skip often gets on my young ones and feels what I need to work on or helps strengthen my weaknesses in one. Multiple sets of eyes can make a huge difference in a program!

It doesn’t matter how good you are or even how good one feels, it’s always important to have someone else give you an opinion sometimes!

I hear it a lot... But Zesterra is so expensive... So is colic surgery. We experience a lot of weather changes in Southern Oklahoma. Today the high is 70 by Saturday evening we have a chance of snow flurries 😳 our barn full will all be starting to get a dose of zesterra today through the weekend to keep them eating and drinking. I prefer having the piece of mind knowing I have given my own and our client horses the best chance to stay hydrated and feeling good through these weather changes.

There is a lot of things I can go without but Zesterra is not one of those things I will ever risk not having in my barn!

We are getting closer and closer to foaling season! The 1-2-3 rule is a great one to live by! We have a few months to go till our first babies are born but it is still important to be checking your mares daily and watching their bellies. Having a great vet on call is always very important as well! We swear by Performance Equine Associates and are so thankful for the wonderful vets that are there to answer questions any hour of the day or night! If you want a clinic with vets that will go to any lengths to treat your horses like their own you need to check out Performance!

Another great day riding babies! It’s a family business around here and each of us have our part. Taffy does a ton of sacking and gentling with our young horses, Skip ground drives and holds their head for me (Shelby) to get on the first few rides. We take a lot of pride in how our young horses ride and really make sure to put in a lot of time and not miss any steps to put the perfect foundation on one!

I’ve gotten to start a lot of coming 2 year olds but this one has a feel that is pretty exceptional with only 2 rides! Get Classy Clarice 646 is by As Good As Nick Gets out of Awesome Classy.

It was a good day at the 646 Ranch! 3 646 ranch owned coming 2 year olds got their first ride. All 3 rode right off with no silly business! Pretty cool to see our breeding and training program working so well!

Miss Kittie got her first day on the sled today! We broke Kittie to ride early this year and have spent the summer getting her good and broke and now she is ready to start learning about her career a little before getting a much earned break for winter!

Kittie is a 3/4 sibling to 646 ranch owned heel/ breakaway horse Kitty Hawks Bay (Hawkeye)! She has a very similar feel to her brother and I am really hoping she wants to be as talented behind a cow as he is! Her future plans are to be a heel horse and breakaway horse.

Pretty cool to look back at how far one has come! Kitty Hawks Bay (Hawkeye) has been owned by the 646 Ranch since he was a yearling. He is now 5 years old. He is a finished heel horse, patterned on the barrels, and now getting pretty solid in the breakaway! I decided in June I wanted to make him a breakaway horse. First video was from June, second video is from 2 days ago! He is so fun! Horses like him are truly once in a lifetime!
