Bull sharks are like “pitbulls of the sea”. They get a bad wrap just like our pitty babies! Truth be told bull sharks are not these “monster man eaters” the media plays them out to be!
While they are very capable predators, they are misrepresented. When treated with respect, these incredible, peaceful animals are a sight to behold. I will never forget my experience diving with these beautiful creatures!
Remember the ocean is their home and we are just visitors. We must respect the locals!! 🤙 Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe when you enter the water.…
🦈-Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk. During this time the visibility is reduced disabling the prey of the shark to see them coming at them from the depths.
🦈 Avoid wearing shiny jewelry. When light reflects off shiny jewelry, it resembles the sheen of fish scales.
🦈Avoid the feeding frenzy. Do not enter the water in areas where there are signs of baitfish. Feeding areas or areas where sewage, runoff or rivers flow into the sea are also dangerous. Diving sea birds are good indicators of these areas.
🦈Remember that sharks see contrast particularly well. Uneven tans and bright colored clothing may draw a shark's attention.
🦈Refrain from excess splashing, particularly in a single spot. Sharks can hear the low-frequency sounds from splashing and may investigate to see if there is a fish/prey in distress.
🦈Never harass sharks!!!
🦈Make eye contact if you see a shark.
When you see a shark, your instinct may be to swim as fast as you can in the other direction, but this could communicate that you are prey and should be chased. When you spot a shark in the ocean, your goal is to let them know that you, too, are a predator. To do this, you must acknowledge the shark by using eye contact. By showing your awareness and confidence in making eye contact with the shark, you assert yourself as a predator.
