This is because no medication is 100% effective, and even a single missed dose could leave them vulnerable to heartworm infection. Additionally, if a dog is infected with heartworms while on prevention medication, the infection may go undetected and progress to a more advanced stage, making treatment more difficult and costly. Therefore, annual heartworm tests are recommended to catch any potential infections early and ensure the best possible outcome for the dog's health.
