Responsibilities and Duties
We encourage technicians to develop skills to their full potential. This is a challenging position that requires skill and care throughout the hospital with duties like:
• Providing quality patient care
• Entering medical notes
• Maintaining cleanliness of treatment and surgical areas
• Kennel and hospital maintenance
• Drawing blood or collecting other lab samples
• General nursing duties
• Animal handling and restraining
• In-house and outside laboratory testing
• X-ray standards and protocols
• Dentistry
• Obtaining history and vital signs for patient exams
• Assisting with patient exams and surgical procedures
• Helping maintain the flow of patients throughout clinic
• Communicate with clients (pet owners) and update patient files
• Perform initial evaluation of the animal’s condition, check vital
statistics, collect samples, and administer some medications
• Obtain and prepare laboratory samples as requested by the veterinarian, i.e. urine, f***l, and ear cytology
• Notify the doctor of lab results in a timely fashion
• Restrain animals in a safe, efficient and compassionate manner
• Prepare and set up for surgical procedures while utilizing knowledge of proper sterile field requirements
• Monitor recovery of surgery
• Accurately prepare and dispense medications as directed by the doctor, ensuring that medications are added to the pet’s record and appropriately charged to the client
• Know vaccination guidelines within the clinic and administer vaccinations under the direction of the doctor
• Monitor hospitalized pets and perform treatments as directed by the doctor
Technical Requirements
• I.V. catheter placement
• Phlebotomy
• In-house laboratory
• Surgical prep
• Anesthesia/surgical monitoring
• Dental procedures
• X-Rays
Personal Requirements
• Veterinary Technician Certification or Licensure (CVT, RVT, LVT, or LVMT) or 2+ years of veterinary technician experience
• Flexible schedule including some weekend and holiday shifts
• Must have computer skills, working knowledge of Cornerstone and VetLab is a plus
• Must possess strong communication skills, good judgment, and ability to manage stressful situations in a fast paced and challenging environment
• Experience with veterinary medical procedures, animal handling, along with excellent communication skills, a sense of urgency, and working harmoniously with teammates are required
• Must be dependable, demonstrate strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
