Sometime, we as equestrians can’t ride. It might be the weather or injury or just wanting a day to recoup. On these days you can still connect and be with the horse that does so much for us when we ride.

I had a great time working with this couple on Saturday. They worked as a team to join Huey’s herd. It is truely beautiful to watch people working and enjoying the relationship with human and horse.

Dusty and I had a great time working with this couple. Both of them got to be a part of their own herd with Dusty. It’s always a joy to show people the unspeakable connection between horse and human.

Huey (horse) has connected so well in only two sessions. He was so relaxed that at the end he rolled and laid down. I wish I got that on video but there will be more incredible moments.

I am excited to announce that I am in two locations now, Kerhonkson, NY and Tivoli, NY. Both will give opportunities to work with different horses and the ability to do Liberty.
The Kerhonkson barn is an animal sanctuary and a percentage of the fee will go to help the animals.

Dusty was introduced to a horse ball. I enjoyed watching him explore and accept the ball. When introducing anything new to a flight animal I always try to make it a part of their safe environment before making them work with it.

Liberty work is bonding with a horse and also allowing the horse to release their stress through play.
This is a young horse who has a great personality and is so curious. It is fun watching her play with the tarp.

Horses are big animals and to people who are not familiar with them, they can be very scary or overwhelming. Just trying something totally new can feel the same way!
I know from experience once you try something new, the experience that you thought was scary can have a positive impact and give you a feeling of accomplishment!

Liberty work and round pen experiences help horse and human to be in a safe and comfortable environment to learn from each other. Liberty work is done with out a lead. This allows the horse the freedom to leave your side when it feels the need to. This freedom strengthens the trust and the bond between horse and human.

The horse in this video is Orion. I met Orion at an animal sanctuary, where my two youngest girls and I volunteer our time. Where most horses would need to see your body language, Orion was different. He is almost blind from cataracts.
Orion taught me that Liberty work goes beyond a horse seeing you. He enjoyed the round pen because he was comfortable and familiar with his surroundings and I made sure to always be in the same spot. I used more voice commands with him and he enjoyed connection and being a partner. Orion was an inspiration to me and made me remember when life throws us a challenge sometimes gives us our best blessing. Wayward Ranch Animal Sanctuary Shay Faicco

In connecting with the horse, you want them to focus on what you are asking them to do next. This is a perfect photo of Dusty looking right at me to see what I am asking him to do. One ear is usually toward me is enough to know he is listening but here he is giving me all his attention.

Learning about the phychology and movement of the horse, gives us the insight into these intelligent creatures.

Equine Time - A New Beginning
At the age of nine I was not very social and always seemed to gravitate to animals. My mom got me involved with an after school program that just introduced kids to horses. At this point in my life I had never ridden or been around horses. After this exposure to horses I started taking lessons and became a barn kid (also know as a barn rat - a kid who does any kind of work to be around horses and get more lessons).
As I grew older I worked for breeding farms, local horses farms, and always felt like something was missing. I love being with the horses but there was a disconnect. Once I was in my late teens I felt like I couldn’t grasp what was misses and I thought horses were out of my life. Little did I know that horse would constantly pop into my life.
As a college student I decided to go out west for my summers to be a camp councilor on horse ranches and work on cattle ranches. Out west I found what I was finally missing with my relationship with horses. The connection between horses and human. Being around instructors that constantly talk about their horse as being their partner and how to understand the horses behavior and reaction, opened my eyes to a new world.
The first time I saw someone work in a round pen doing ground work and Liberty I knew that this is what I wanted to learn and teach people about. It is not the way people usually think of horses. We usually think of riding, carting or racing horses. Ground work teaches use about the anatomy and how the horse’s body works to carry us and how their minds work. The first time experiencing a horse wanting to be next to you, follow you because they want to be with you, not because they are tied to you or made to stand next to you, is an over whelming feeling.
I am hoping to give more people the opportunity to have this experience through “Equine Time.” I could not have started my dream of showing people this connection if it wasn’t for Elena, Trina, Louise, Brinn, Barbara , Eleni and my family and friends helping me.
