Each year, the 20 Under 40 Award honors twenty outstanding young leaders in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan who have made remarkable contributions to their careers and communities. This prestigious program not only recognizes their achievements but also inspires others to lead.

We couldn’t be prouder to celebrate our very own Laura Simmons-Wark, Executive Director of Humane Ohio, as a 2024 recipient! Laura joined us in 2019 as Director of Outreach and Development and was quickly promoted to Executive Director—the youngest in our history. Her leadership led to an 18.25% profit increase in her first year, and under her guidance, Humane Ohio has secured over $700,000 in grants and donations.

Laura’s impact on animal welfare extends beyond Humane Ohio. Previously, at Lucas County Canine Care & Control (LC4), she championed adoption programs, initiated community outreach, and launched life-saving programs for Pitbull-type dogs. She now serves as an advisor to regional shelters, regularly promotes pet adoption on TV, and is an active member of various animal welfare organizations.

We are immensely proud to call Laura the leader of our team and to see her receive this well-deserved recognition!

🎃🐾 Halloween Pet Safety Tips! 🐾🎃

As you prepare for a night of frights and delights, here are some tips to keep your furry friends safe and happy:

No Sweets for Your Sweetie 🍬 Keep candy, especially chocolate, out of reach from pets. Avoid placing candy bowls on the ground, where curious noses may find them!

Keep Pumpkin Away from the Pumpkin 🎃 Decorate safely! Candles in jack-o-lanterns can be a fire hazard if tipped, and some plants can be toxic.

Costumes Are Optional 🐾 Dressing up pets is fun, but don’t force a costume if they’re uncomfortable. Pets usually prefer their natural “birthday suits!”

No Trick-or-Treater Greeters 🚪 Halloween is high-traffic at the front door, which can stress even friendly pets. Consider keeping them away from the door to prevent any accidental escapes.

Must Show I.D. 🏷️ Spooked pets may dash off. Ensure they’re microchipped and wearing an ID tag, just in case they get out.

Party Poopers Are OK 🛋️ Some pets feel happier in a quiet room away from the noise. Set up a cozy space for your furry friends to relax while you enjoy the festivities.

A fresh dog for a sunny day here at Humane Ohio! Frankly Plant Based Kitchen is back in our parking lot at 3948 W Alexis Rd today until 2pm! We ❤ them- they give back $1 from each hot dog sold!

Find us today 11:30-2pm on W. Alexis Rd for a quick lunch and an easy way to give back. We donate $1 for every hotdog sold. We have the Big Mac Dog on special this week. It’s topped with chz, lettuce, pickle, onion & special sauce. Definitely one of our bestsellers!

🌾 Urgent Need for Straw Donations for Our Outdoor Cat Shelters! 🌾

We’re completely out of straw, which is essential for keeping outdoor cats warm and dry during colder months. If you’re able to donate, please bring straw (not hay!) to us during our hours of operation:

📅 Monday – Friday: 7:30am to 5:30pm

Why Straw, Not Hay?
It’s important to know the difference:

🌱 Hay is for eating — it’s green, softer, and tends to retain moisture, making it unsuitable for shelters.
🛏️ Straw is for sleeping — it’s dry, hollow, and insulating, perfect for keeping our outdoor friends cozy and dry!
Donations can be dropped off at 3948 W Alexis. Every bale of straw will make a real difference in the comfort and safety of our community’s outdoor cats! 🐱💛 Thank you for helping us care for them!

Huge shout out to our pals at K-100, Marco and Lyn! Yesterday, Humane Ohio was the grateful recipient of their “At Work Perk”— that meant free pizza for our dedicated staff from cheerssportseatery! 🍕

Not only did our staff enjoy the yummy lunch, a few of our adoptable cats got some extra playtime as well! 🐈‍⬛

Are you or someone you know looking for a loving cat who would be happiest as the only feline in the home? Meet Henrietta! This sweet girl who’s been through a lot but still has so much love to give. She gets along well with dogs, she even enjoys rubbing up against them!

This precious girl was left behind when her owners moved, forced to fend for herself outside while pregnant. Thankfully, she found her way into Humane Ohio’s foster program, where she’s been thriving. She’s a total sweetheart with people—she loves to talk, purr, snuggle, and play. Even if you work a lot, she’ll be happy to have a cozy home.

And don’t forget—right now, we’re running an adoption promotion! Now is the perfect time to give her the forever home she deserves. You can be the one to make a difference in her life. 🌟

As we wrap up Vet Tech Week, we want to take a moment to thank our incredible vet techs for doing what they do best… loving and caring for pets every single day! 💙🐾 Your dedication, skill, and compassion make such a difference in the lives of every animal that walks through our doors.

Words can never fully express how grateful we are for everything you do—whether it’s helping with surgeries, comforting a scared pet, or making sure each animal gets the best care possible. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, and we’re so lucky to have such an amazing team.

Another way Humane Ohio supports the cats in our community and their caretakers, is by providing outdoor cat shelters right here in the lobby of the clinic!

Ranging in price from $10-$40 dependent on sizes, these have been known to keep cats warm and sheltered for years through all weather that our blustery NW Ohio and SW Michigan has to offer!

Stop by anytime we are open at 3948 W Alexis rd. We also accept donations of straw & large styrofoam coolers as well!
