Whether your pet is your Valentine or your favorite cuddle buddy, show them some extra love today!

Here are a few ways to keep their hearts happy:

🐾 Heart Health Matters – A strong heart isn’t just for romance! Regular check-ups help keep your pet’s heart in top shape.

🍫 No Chocolate for Fluffy! – While you enjoy your sweet treats, remember that chocolate (and many Valentine’s goodies) are toxic to pets. Stick to pet-safe treats instead!

🌹 Watch Those Roses – Flowers are beautiful, but some (like lilies and tulips) can be dangerous to pets. Keep bouquets out of paws’ reach!

💌 Microchip = Love That Lasts – Make sure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are up to date—it’s like a love letter that always brings them home!

It’s MONDAY, let’s introduce you all to one of our team members!

For this we would like you to meet, Sam Essery!

🏥🐾Sam has been a valued member of North Veterinary Clinic since 2009, but her passion for animals started long before that! As a young adult, she gained hands-on experience working at boarding kennels and supervising doggy daycares.

After earning her associate degree in Animal Care from Becker College in 2008, she worked as an animal control officer, further deepening her commitment to animal welfare.

Sam takes pride in helping pet owners understand their pets' treatments and medications, ensuring they feel confident in their care. She has a special place in her heart for rescued and unsocialized animals. ❤️🐶🐱.

Outside of work, Sam is deeply involved in her community—serving on the Old Home Day Committee for Union and recently joining the Library Committee for Union. She also enjoys balancing family life with caring for her rescue crew, which includes two dogs, two cats, and even a flock of ducks! 🦆🐕🐈

It’s MONDAY, let’s introduce you all to one of our team members!

For this we would like you to meet, Hannah!

Hannah joined our team in August of 2023; she recently graduated high school and was an active member of its Vocational Agriculture Program.

She graduated with a focus on Veterinary Medicine and took great pleasure in competing for her FFA chapters Veterinary Science CDE team. Hannah even won state champion and 11th in the nation!

Hannah is working towards her vet tech license with the hopes to later specialize in equine rehabilitation.

Outside of work, Hannah enjoys spending her free time with horses, whether it be riding, showing, or working with her family's draft horses. She also enjoys fly fishing and spending time with her Golden Retriever, Henry, and spoiled cat Layla.

She’s excited to keep learning and growing in the veterinary field!

A couple of months ago, we had the privilege of treating a resilient duck named Dawn Dotta after a harrowing encounter with a fox. While peacefully going about her day, Dawn Dottas world was suddenly disrupted when a fox attacked—taking down one of her chicken companions and leaving Dawn Dotta with a serious neck wound.

Fortunately, Dawn Dotta, a tough and healthy Peking duck, remained bright and alert despite her injuries. Her caring owners rushed her to Fenton River Veterinary Hospital, where our team in Stafford office was ready to help. 🏥🦆

When she arrived, she was stable and quickly proved to be a model poultry patient—well, except for a few playful nips with her bill. 😅 Upon examination, she had a significant neck wound, clear nasal discharge, and stable heart and respiratory rates.

With skilled hands and compassionate care, Dr. Tirbassi and our dedicated technicians carefully removed feathers from around the injury to assess the full extent of the damage. While the wound exposed critical veins and arteries, we were relieved to find that none had been compromised.

The wound was thoroughly cleaned, flushed, and sutured, and Dawn Dotta was sent home with antibiotics to prevent infection and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling and keep her comfortable.

Her owners were entrusted with the challenge of keeping her wound clean and dry—a tricky task for a water-loving duck! But they made sure Dawn Dotta enjoyed a cozy indoor recovery near their wood stove.

Two weeks later, Dawn Dotta strutted back into our clinic like the queen she is and to everyone’s delight, her wound had fully healed, her feathers were filling back in beautifully, and her stitches were removed. She was officially given a clean bill of health and was ready to reclaim her role as the boss of the chicken coop!

Predator attacks are a common danger for poultry like chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Although these injuries may seem catastrophic, with proper wound care, antibiotics, and pain management, these resilient birds often make remarkable recoveries.🦆💙

We had the pleasure of welcoming some very special visitors to our Tolland office!

A local Brownie Girl Scout troop stopped by for a tour as part of their mission to earn their Pet Care badge.🏅🐶

Our wonderful receptionist, Kim, led the scouts on a fun and engaging behind-the-scenes walk through the clinic, sharing how we care for pets and keep them healthy. 🩺🐕🐱

The highlight of the visit came when Dr. Batty, with the expert help of technician Christina, taught the girls about pet care and even let them listen to a dog’s heartbeat with a stethoscope! Seeing their faces light up as they discovered the importance of caring for animals was truly heartwarming.

We were thrilled to help these determined scouts earn their Pet Care badge, and we couldn’t be prouder of their enthusiasm and curiosity. 🌟 Great job, girls—keep learning, exploring, and making a difference for animals everywhere! 🐕🐾🌎.

🍁 Thanksgiving Safety Tips for Your Pets! 🐾

Foods to Avoid Giving Your Dogs 🚫

These popular holiday treats can be toxic to pets and should be off their plate:

🍗 Turkey Bones & Skin: Bones can splinter, and the fatty skin can cause pancreatitis.

🧅 Stuffing & Gravy: Often contains onions, garlic, or spices that are harmful to dogs.

🧈 Mashed Potatoes with Butter or Cream: Too rich for their stomachs and can upset digestion.

🍇 Cranberry Sauce: Sugary or contains added ingredients like raisins (which are toxic).

🍪 Desserts: Chocolate, xylitol (a sugar substitute), and nutmeg are all dangerous for pets.

Dog-Friendly Thanksgiving Foods ✅

Your pup doesn’t have to feel left out! Here are safe options you can share in moderation:

🦃 Plain Turkey (Boneless & Skinless): Cooked, unseasoned turkey meat is a safe treat.

🍠 Plain Sweet Potatoes: Packed with nutrients, but avoid butter, sugar, or marshmallows.

🫛 Green Beans: Steamed and unseasoned green beans are a healthy snack.

🎃 Pumpkin: Plain, cooked pumpkin (not pie filling) is great for digestion.

🥕 Carrots: Raw or cooked carrots make a crunchy, safe treat.

General Safety Tips 🦃

🍁 Keep your trash secured; leftover food and bones can be irresistible but dangerous for pets.

🍁 Set boundaries during mealtime to prevent accidental feeding from well-meaning guests.

Wishing you and your families a safe and happy Thanksgiving
