December is Cat Lover’s Month—so here’s an essential cat-care reminder:

Cats require daily pet-sitting visits—no skipping days!

Anything can happen when pets are left alone, and cats are no exception. From serious health risks like urethral blockages to potential home mishaps—such as a cat accidentally dislodging a water hose behind the washing machine—leaving your cat unattended for even a day can lead to costly or heartbreaking outcomes.

Even if you “leave extra food and water,” your cat still needs daily check-ins to ensure their safety, health, and well-being.

Tips for Keeping Pets Safe During Cold Weather Walks

As temperatures drop, it’s important to keep your pets safe and comfortable during winter walks. Here are some essential tips:

1. Choose the Right Time for Walks

Opt for late morning or early afternoon walks when temperatures are warmer. Avoid early morning or late evening outings when it’s coldest.

2. Dress Your Pet Appropriately

Short-haired dogs, small breeds, and senior pets may benefit from sweaters or coats. Make sure the clothing fits well and doesn’t restrict movement.

3. Protect Their Paws

Salt and de-icing chemicals can irritate paws. Use pet-safe booties or apply paw balm before heading out. After the walk, wipe their paws clean to remove any residue.

4. Keep Walks Short

Limit the duration of walks in freezing temperatures, especially if your pet shows signs of discomfort, such as shivering or lifting their paws.

5. Watch for Signs of Hypothermia

Symptoms include shivering, lethargy, and weakness. If you notice any of these, head inside immediately and warm your pet up gradually.

6. Stay Visible

Winter walks often mean reduced daylight. Use reflective gear for you and your pet, and consider a light-up collar or leash for added visibility.

7. Hydration is Key

Pets can still become dehydrated in cold weather, so ensure they have access to fresh water before and after walks.

8. Avoid Frozen Water

Stay clear of frozen ponds or lakes. Ice can be thin and dangerous, posing a risk of falling through.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your pet enjoys safe and comfortable walks all winter long.

**Why Adopt, Not Shop? 🐾**

As a proud pet sitter and lifelong animal lover here in New Jersey, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible joy and companionship that pets bring to our lives. However, too many animals are waiting in shelters for their forever homes.

Did you know that in the U.S., over **3 million dogs** enter shelters every year? While many find loving homes, thousands still face uncertain futures.

When you adopt, you’re saving a life and giving a second chance to a loyal, loving friend. Shelter pets come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities, so you're sure to find one that fits your family perfectly.

If you’re considering adding a furry family member, I encourage you to visit a local shelter or rescue organization. Let’s make a difference, one adoption at a time!

Have a story about your rescue pet? Share it in the comments! I’d love to hear about the amazing animals you’ve welcomed into your lives. ❤️

November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month: Why It Matters

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in pets, affecting 1 in 4 during their lifetime. Early detection is key—watch for signs like unexplained lumps, weight loss, or persistent sores.

Regular vet visits, a healthy diet, and exercise can help prevent some cancers. If your pet is diagnosed, know that treatments like surgery and chemo are available, and our compassionate pet sitters can support you through the journey.

Join us this month in spreading awareness—let’s work together to keep our pets healthy and happy! 🐾

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. While there are loads of pets that need to be adopted, why do senior pets get their own month?

Senior pets are commonly overlooked in shelters, yet, they can make wonderful and loving companions, especially if you’re looking for a calmer pet. Often, senior pets are also past frustrating behaviors that commonly occur during puppy- and kittenhood, like excessive chewing. Therefore, if you want to skip these behaviors, you may want to consider adopting an older pet, especially during this month. AHS-Newark Branch Associated Humane Tinton Falls
