Our staff are responsible for all daily operations including administrative, cleaning/feeding all animals, adoptions, reclaims, owner relinquishments as well as animal control. MYSTERIOUS CANINE RESPIRATORY ILLNESS: OCHD OFFERS TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PET SAFE.

A possible increase in upper respiratory illness in dogs (canine infectious respiratory disease complex [CIRDC]) has been reported from multiple locations across the United States in the second half of 2023.

It is not known whether this is ONE outbreak with ONE single pathogen or multiple agents and multiple outbreaks.
It is not known whether this is a virus or bacteria.
This may ultimately be a diagnosis of exclusion, as early data indicates that many of these patients are not testing positive for the virus/bacteria we test most often for.
It is respiratory season for both humans and dogs, and there is no need to panic as we always see an uptick in respiratory infections this time of year.
It is highly unlikely that whatever is affecting dogs will also make humans sick and vice versa.

Here’s what dog owners can do:
Relax. It seems like there’s more respiratory disease in dogs in some areas, but that’s something veterinarians often see. Serious disease is being reported in a small subset of infected dogs, but that’s also something they regularly see. So, being aware is good, being anxious is bad.
The vast majority of dogs that get CIRDC recover uneventfully. That’s as true now as it was a year or 10 years ago. However, severe disease can occur so we don’t want to be too dismissive.
Recommendations:

Limit contact with new dogs at dog parks, doggy day cares or boarding facilities.
Dog owners should help keep their pets healthy by making sure they’re up-to-date on all vaccines, such as those for canine influenza, Bordetella and parainfluenza.
Reducing contact with sick dogs. This can be harder to determine but if a dog looks sick (coughing, runny nose, runny eyes), keep your dog away from it.
Keep sick dogs at home and seek veterinary care.
Avoid communal water bowls shared by multiple dogs.

If the following signs are present, a prompt visit to the veterinary clinic is indicated:

Weakness, severe depression (meaning the dog is really quiet, not engaged and just lies around, doesn’t get up when you’d expect it too (like for food))
Loss of appetite
Difficulty breathing (breathing faster and harder even when not exercising)
Rapid worsening of illness
Cough that is causing significant problems such as vomiting or making it hard for the dog to breathe

It’s especially important to see the veterinarian if these signs occur in a high-risk dog, including:

Elderly
Very young
Pregnant
Immunocompromised (by disease or treatment)
Underlying heart or respiratory tract disease
Brachycephalic (i.e. squishy-faced) breeds

As with any emerging issue, the current situation in the US is fluid, and we’re trying to sort out more about what’s happening. At the moment, for your average dog owner, it’s still just a matter of some common sense precautions and good dog care.

We are so happy to announce that there are three more kittens available here at the shelter! Gwendolyn is a sweet girl who loves attention and to be close to her people for pets and love. Mouse is a funny cat with half a tail who is very vocal when she wants some attention or just to remind you she is there. Tango is a timid girl who loves a cozy spots to rest and silently judge those around her.

Who wants some amazing news?

If you have been to our shelter in the past 9 months to see our dogs, you have probably seen Ollie. Many people have walked past his cage because Ollie was very fearful of new people. All of the barking and jumping really made it hard for Ollie to find his forever home.

Fortunately, Emily saw something in Ollie that made her go the extra mile to gain his trust. They bonded almost immediately and with a few extra visits, they became best friends.

Our dogs need some friends!!! Are you 18+, love being around dogs and have time to spare? Do you already have or want experience working hands on with dogs? 🐶Become a volunteer at TRAF!🐶 Being a dog volunteer is a very important role and it is not just showing up and petting dogs; We're looking for individuals who are caring, dedicated, knowledgeable and willing to be the best part of our canine's day🤗🥰 Our dogs greatly appreciate the essential volunteers that also assist staff in cleaning kennels, giving them fresh blankets/toys, grooming- including bathing, brushing, nail trims, coat maintenence, etc-, feedings, administering medications, organizing, etc. What YOU do: 🤝GET TO KNOW THEM! Advocate for their true personalities, that you as a volunteer get to see and bring out in them. Learn what their drawbacks are or what kind of training they may require, their favorite treats, games or toys, etc. YOU help them get adopted! Theres nothing more rewarding than watching your favorite dog get their furever home🏡 🧠With sufficient knowledge of our animal's personalities and temperaments, you'll get to show our dogs & cats off to the public that are interested in adopting! Tours and Meet&Greets are a vital step in our dogs finding the right homes, and who better to show them off than the amazing volunteers who spend the most time with them here in the kennels?! ⚽️PLAY! We have a TWO spacious yards for plenty of playing. Our dogs have toys galore - balls, squeakies, jolly balls, baby pools, sprinklers, agility structures! The yards are fenced, gated and separated by a shaded patio partition. 🚶‍♂️EXERCISE! Take them for walks around the shelter compound or the nearby fields. 📖JUST CHILL! Rainy day or too hot out? COME GET YOUR KARMA❤ the good kind! Karma is just under a year old, Shepherd Mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. All ready to learn & recieve lots of love in a new home! Please read her bio fully and carefully. Karma was surrendered to us by a family who underestimated Karma's puppy needs for training and releasing all her energy. She is a very active girl and will require an active owner/home. She is very food motivated and LOVES to please. She can be a little shy when she first meets you but once she trusts you! She enjoys toys and playing in the yard, going for walks and being by your side 🤞. She is 100% housetrained. Karma has demonstrated that she is able to clear our fence, a high or privacy fence will be required to adopt Karma. She doesn't seem to mind other dogs, has not been tested with cats and she is NOT recommended for a home with children at this time due to her tendency to be mouthy and aggressive with her food/treats. **KARMA IS CURRENTLY FOOD PROTECTIVE, SHE ESPECIALLY NEEDS TRAINING IN THIS AREA so that she can be the best girl that she truly is!
