A few days ago, these cuties came in to get treated for hot spots. Even though these kiddos came from different households, their hot spots were in the exact same place! It's that time of the year when we see these A LOT, especially in long/thick coat dogs. These itchy skin lesions can pop up fast and become inflamed and oozy. There are many reasons why these nasty things pop up; allergies, insect bites, poor grooming/matting or licking out of boredom. Most hot spots can be treated with a little shave down, some topical/oral antibiotics, and the cone of shame!

With the weather heating up, please keep your kiddos paws in mind! Asphalt temperatures can be 30-40 degrees hotter than the air temperature and can cause skin damage within seconds. On a 75 degree day, pavement can reach temperatures up to 125 degrees! We advise you to follow the rules below and periodically check your dog’s feet to make sure they aren't being damaged!

June is National Microchipping Month! We cannot stress enough how important it is to have your pet microchipped and registered. Millions (yes, millions) of pets go missing each year and most of them are never reunited with their families. The chances of reuniting with your pet increase if they have a microchip that is registered to you. If a pet is found and taken to a clinic or rescue, the first thing they will do is check for that chip. Please give your pets a better chance of coming home and get them chipped!!

Everybody meet Sully! He had a tumor removed from his thigh called a mast cell tumor. These tumors are a type of cancer that result from a rapid division of a type of blood cell called mast cells. These tumors can grow internally but we mostly see them on the skin. Sully's mast cell tumor was in a tough spot and difficult to close because of the location on the leg. It was a struggle to find a way to keep this area covered up, fortunately his parents found these adorable pants that did the trick! Sully sure knows how to rock some overalls!

With summer approaching, we want to remind everyone to keep an eye on their pets in the heat. Heatstroke can come on quickly and can lead to organ damage and even death. Unlike humans, dogs only have sweat glands on their paws so they have to pant to cool down. A dogs body temperature runs higher than humans, usually ranging from 100.5F – 102.5F, so they overheat faster than us. Brachycephalic (short muzzle) breeds, older dogs, and overweight dogs are at an even higher risk.
To avoid heatstroke, be mindful of how much time your pet is spending outside, especially if there is no shade for them to rest in or water. On hotter days, keep walks short and limit the time your dog is outside or exercising to ensure they do not overheat. If you notice your dog starting to pant excessively, bring them into an air-conditioned area to let them cool down. Call your veterinarian if your animal continues to be in distress.

Retractable leashes were invented in 1908 and are a popular choice for pet owners. Unfortunately, they have been known to cause injury to pets and humans. When using a retractable leash you can easily lose control over your dog and it gives them the option to dart away from you. Your pet could run into the street or into another animal and get hurt. Using a standard 6 foot leash gives you better control and is more suitable for training your pup to stay close to you. We do not recommend using them at our clinic but if that is the only option please keep it in the locked position.

It's unfortunate that we have to make this post but all we ask of our clients is to treat us with kindness and respect. Our staff works very hard every day to care for your pets so it’s disheartening when we get yelled at for things that are out of our control. Sometimes an annual appointment turns into a work up or we have an emergency come in so things can get backed up. Please be patient and kind to our staff, thank you!
