This is a good read. Its long so here is a highlight but it should be read in its entirety! In regard to Racehorses retiring from racing, understand them for what they are - racehorses!:
" They live in a very structured lifestyle and are ridden to gallop! Even when I backed young Racehorses, although they also had some schooling education they were ultimately produced to go into racing rather than be a dressage horse or happy hacker and when they come out of Racing we have to re produce them all over again.
Why isn't this always easy? Because they have already had a job and a career and these intelligent, hard working animals will still be a Racehorse even after they leave Racing. Just because you have turned them away for 6 months and fattened them up or long lined them for miles and miles and done hours of ground work, when you get on they haven't miraculously forgotten what it was like to be a Racehorse and most never will.
Is that a problem? NO? It isn't if we understand them for what they are and realize that not only are you teaching your Racehorse how to be a ridden horse, you have to adjust your whole way of riding to help produce them in the best possible way".

Learned something new - Sidepocket Champ loves watermelon! Good thing we were done with our class as there was a lot of watermelon juice on his lips, my hands, my breeches. A well earned treat as he is such a good boy! Thanks to our great friends for bringing food to share with everyone, including horses, at the event!

A great evening of learning last night and got to hang out with our friend Catherine Kirby of Noble Horse Sanctuary (Noble is a sanctuary for senior horses and provides a safe, loving home for many older equines). Many thanks to Boehringer Ingelheim and Paragon Equine for hosting! I learned a lot, particularly in regard to Equine Asthma.

Its winter and ski season! Canter Haven receives various donations of items and since we are getting quite a collection of great things, time to offer items for sale. Money from all sales go directly to the farm and OTTBs ( we are, after all a 501c3!)

So here is the OTTBs Etsy shop! Will be adding a lot more items such as paintings, more jewelry, and such. But as it is ski season, here are some ski pins from the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics! (there are more on our Etsy shop too)
