We are sad to say our Events Team has made the difficult decision to CANCEL this Saturday’s craft show, Zooliday Market, due to the impending rain and its effects it would have on vendor product & attendance.

At this time, we are unsure if there will be an opportunity to reschedule due to our already booked out calendar, but will post if there are any updates.

We’d like to thank our community for their excitement for this event and apologize for any inconvenience.

The Zoo itself will still be OPEN on Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm - just be sure to bring an umbrella if you visit!

***We will still be having Member Morning on Saturday, with gates opening only for Friends of the Topeka Zoo Members at 8 am***

EARLY CLOSURE ANNOUNCEMENT!

We have decided for the safety of our guests, staff, and animals to close early today (October 30th). We appreciate our animal care staff that have remained on grounds to ensure our animals are in a safe, secure area to ride out today & tonight’s storm.

We will provide updates should any damages or changes occur, but plan to be open tomorrow from 9 am to 5 pm!

Election Day is just around the corner… 🐻🇺🇸

Last week Sun bear Hoho turned 35, the age eligible for presidency in the United States. If he were to be elected he would simultaneously be the oldest Sun bear in an AZA accredited facility, yet the youngest POTUS.

🐯👑 The costumes at Boo! At the Zoo yesterday were CREATIVE.

Thanks to all you cool cats (& kittens) that visited yesterday- we had just about 6,000 in attendance making it our busiest day of the year!! We couldn’t possibly capture all the fun that was had.

Neither weekends of Boo! At the Zoo would be spook-tacular without all the help we receive from the vendors and volunteers in our wonderful community - THANK YOU Topeka for showing up for us! 🎃👻

We’re very proud of our maintenance supervisor, Jason, for making a trip to North Carolina this week to aid in efforts in restoring WNC Nature Center after Hurricane Helene. This trip was put together by other Zoos in the midwest, proving that being a part of The Association of Zoos and Aquariums means being a part of a larger team that cares.

Slow your scroll- its 🦥

While sloths are solitary animals in the wild- they are never truly alone! A sloth’s fur has its own ecosystem that can be full of algae, fungi, sloth moths (yes, there is a moth species found only in sloth fur) as well as other insects. This is possible because of micro-cracks found in sloth hair that creates the perfect environment for algae and fungi to grow, forming a mutualistic symbiotic relationship between the sloth & these organisms.

How does having its own ecosystem help the sloth? The answer is camouflage! Green algae & fungi not only helps the sloth blend into the surrounding greenery, but also eliminates any of the sloth’s odors. Sloths look and smell just like their surroundings, making it difficult for any predators to spot them!

If you have difficulty spotting Jackie, our Hoffman’s two-toed sloth, you’re not alone! She typically hangs out at the very top of our tropical rainforest dome or near her food dish/milk crate that hangs alongside the air vents. Happy sloth sleuthing! 🦥

So we know this is a lot of (needed & deserved) content of our presidential candidate Hoho 🐻🇺🇸, but it IS his birthday & we were inclined to share that he enjoyed his birthday pumpkin 🎃🎂 (which was hallowed, filled with Gatorade, then frozen).

Val is prepping for winter denning! 🐻

Question! 🙋 How do we enter black bear Val as our own contender for #FatBearWeek ? For those who may be confused, Fat Bear Week was started by Katmai National Park & Preserve to educate the public on their brown bear residents in an engaging way. Each autumn, the national park produces photos of its largest bears as they pack on the pounds to prepare for winter along with a comparison photo of when the bear first emerged for spring. Online polls allow voters to choose which bear at the national park has the biggest transformation or fluff in the rump!
