🔥🔥HEAT ADVISORY 🔥🔥
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for our area, in effect from 1 pm - 8 pm on July 2nd!

As a reminder, our animals', staff, and guests' safety come first.

Some animals will be inside with increased access to air conditioning and will therefore not be viewable. Other animals who are more acclimated to heat will still be given access to choose whether or not they want to be outside, but may choose to stay in which means animal viewing may be limited.

To accommodate, we will be offering an ADVERSE WEATHER DISCOUNT of $2 OFF each ticket the entire day. To receive the discount, tickets must be purchased at the admissions gate.

💧 Drink Water
🥵 Pay attention for heat cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke.
❄️ Use our air conditioned areas whenever you need!

Happy National Registrar's Day Today, we're taking a moment to celebrate a very special team member at the zoo. Sara is our Registrar and Animal Well-being Coordinator (RAWC) - which is fitting because she rawcs!

A lot of people probably don't know what this role does. She ensures that all of our records are up to date, prepares permit paperwork, provides training to keepers, communicates with other zoos, analyzes results of our animal well-being assessments, uses data to make suggestions to animal care teams, ensures all animal exchanges are legal, and acts like a travel agent for all animal moves to ensure they get to where they are going safely. She does a lot of things that if they're going well, you don't notice, so we want to make sure we take notice today!

Beyond her normal job, she will hop in and help with just about anything including helping with veterinary procedures, hugging bugs, rescuing turtles, tagging butterflies, trying to meet every rhino in the US, posing with produce, providing mentorship to others, and much, much more.

Thank you, Sara, for all you do at the zoo!

When it’s on the same day as 🦒📸

Bonus fact: the ‘wrinkles’ on Sarge’s head are actually calcium deposits that form for protection on male giraffes’ skull for when they head-butt other males.
It is also thought that female giraffes find this as an attractive quality during mating season. We’d like to think male giraffes would be showing these off in any they take.

The Topeka Zoo is blooming with beauty. 🌺🌼

Our horticulture team has been hard at work this year, ensuring the Zoo's plants and grounds are just as rich in diversity as our array of animals. Upon your walk around you'll find many gorgeous exotic plants, trees & flowers! (Check out the daylilies that are blooming along multiple pathways).

While we appreciate the exotics, much of our plant collection are actually Kansas-native species that our horticulture team meticulously plant to aid pollinators. These include (but are not limited to) varieties of sage, milkweed, poppies, and coneflowers.

Cooing over International Pigeon Day!

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is home to a pair of Nicobar pigeons: Laffy Taffy and Peppermint Patty.

Nicobar pigeons usually mate for life in monogamous pairings and have a defined display of courtship. Males will begin the display with cooing sounds toward the female. The courtship continues with the male 'bowing' to the female and then collecting materials for the female to construct a nest with. Both parents share incubating responsibilities, laying on one to two eggs for approximately 30 days.

You can view Laffy Taffy and Peppermint Patty inside our Tropical Rainforest Dome! Perfect timing, considering we will be celebrating the dome's 50th year being open on Saturday, June 22.
