Location: Monmouth, Maine
•NEW ENGLAND- HELLO!
•We will transport her anywhere

Jayne was a last call dog at a shelter in Texas who found her way to the promise lands of New England. She is needing a new home with no dogs and only teen children. She is good with dog savy cats. Spayed, fully vaccinated with no health conditions, 3.5 years old, and somewhat small for a Dane, weighing about 95 lbs.

Jayne is docile inside other than the occasional zoom in, and very snuggly. She is leash-trained—uses a Gentle Leader head halter, and LOVES to slither in the grass, roll over upside down, and slither more. Sometimes she’ll do a full somersault to start it. She snuggles in the bed too. If you pat the bed near you, she dives in nose-first and pushes in hard. And yes, she snores strongly.! And she snuggles so tightly and loves it.

She is a great house guest. Crate, leash, and potty trained. Does well on car rides. She also has basic obedience down (sit, down, stay, paw) and knows to wait for her food bowl. She’s not destructive in the slightest and has never counter surfed, chewed or gotten into the trash. A miracle Dane!

She has shown no aggression towards humans besides the occasional growl at men in a baseball hat. She even met a young man in a wheelchair and leaned up against him to make friends. Fireworks are not fun in her book and neither are thunderstorms. She does have some general anxiety and is on Prozac daily.

As for activity level she’s not over the top. She really adjusts to whatever her human wants to do. Short walks are fine. However, if her human wanted to keep going or maybe take a jog she would be right there with ya. She is a fit dane and is in excellent health.

The poor girl desperately needs to be out of the shelter. Danes simply don't do well in the noisy environment. She is a stray so she's already traumatized. Her history with children & other dogs is unknown. Serious inquiries only please. You can contact me and I'll put you in touch with my friends there.

LUNA HAS BEEN ADOPTED

COURTSEY POST: Please contact the person listed if you have questions or want more information

Luna is a senior girl, she'll be 8 yrs old in October. I haven't met her but she sounds like a typical senior, ready to spend her life in a quiet retirement home. Her family has a baby which has made her realize life is not quiet with a baby and although she's NOT threatening or aggressive towards the baby or anyone else, she is anxious about the commotion a baby makes in any home.

That said, Luna will not be adopted to a home with children because she would love to live out her life in a quiet environment. Please don't apply if you have the quietest little sweethearts in the whole wide world 😁 Young, high energy dogs wouldn't be a good fit for the same reason.

She's spayed (or I wouldn't be advertising her), she's good with other dogs (which makes ME want her because senior dogs are my love but 6 dogs are too many), being an older dog she does have some "traction" issues and slippery floors might be an issue (although yoga mat "rugs" are perfect for this), she still enjoys her walks and has zoomies in the yard, she has no food allergies, recently had a cyst removed from her eye with no follow-up issues, was used for breeding in her younger years (before her current owners rescued her), loves to ride and sounds like the perfect gal to me.

Don't let her age deter you, my feeling has always been that senior dogs move in, unpack and are forever grateful. I adore them

This is a courtesy post, PLEASE read it and respond to the person with the pup.

Roo is a 6mo Dane/Shephard mix, who is spayed and fully vaccinated but will need boosters done in 3-4 weeks. Roo is currently recovering from surgery, so she will need to be low key until the 30th of December, but we would love this bundle of love to be able to start her new year in her forever home ♥️. She loves other dogs, to cuddle and play with her humans and pet companions. We are unsure of cats as she was a surrender and we do not know much of her history. I’m her third home I took her in as a foster situation, I work at a veterinary hospital and she needed emergency surgery and the owner could not afford it. I am located in the Oxford Hills area. She is 50lbs vet predicted maybe 75-90lbs full grown. They can contact me at 2073036848 or my husband Logan Emerson at 2074200345.

SEEKING FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME FOR SWEET BELLA!

Bella Swan is a gorgeous 3 yr old Dane mix. She has a gleaming black and white coat, big expressive eyes and an adorable soft face.

Bella is doing great in her foster home.**
**WE ARE SEEKING A NEW FOSTER OR A FOREVER HOME FOR BELLA! In order to save Bella's life in the shelter, we had to get her out to a temp foster home.

Her foster mom says about Bella: "... Bella has not a single aggressive bone in her body, doesn't resource guard, doesn't really bark, just needs exercise, love and stimulation. She wants to be held and cuddled and played with. She is literally a gigantic puppy."

Bella had lived with another dog in her previous home. She will do fine as solo however. Another canine companion would need to do intros to ensure compatibility. She LOVES her walks. Fully house trained and good in the crate at night.

Bella's ideal home would be one where she is loved and cared for of course! One committed to her well being. A home where she gets adequate, daily exercise.

Bella is about three yrs old and weighs about 60 lbs. She is utd on all shots and is spayed.

Please contact [email protected] if interested in Bella Swan and her rescue will get right back to you.

Boomer! I love this guy so much but he's not good with the other dogs. He has so much love to give to his humans though. When I'm at the desk, he's touching my feet or squeezing himself under it. He's great in the car, loves his zoomies, never challenges the barrier to get to the other dogs, is good at the vet, loves the snow, is never destructive (except to stuffies and they don't stand a chance) doesn't mind having his nails trimmed, will hop into the tub for a bath and tries to convince you he's a lap dog! He'd be a perfect dog for an active person. I can see him being happy to hike, run or bike with someone. He has no clue how strong he is so would probably not be happy with a sedentary home. Arrange a visit with him. FMI [email protected]

This girl has landed in a shelter. The manager of this shelter is someone I trust to be totally honest about a dog, any dog, but especially a Great Dane because she has one and loves this breed.
That said, this girl is 3 years old, it's said she came from a "breeder" in Brunswick, ME. (I may have had another dog from this awful breeder. He turned out to be a sweet boy) The owner allowed her to have a litter and then surrendered her to the shelter. She's lived with several children. She seems anxious around men and doesn't have wonderful manners because she's obviously not spent the last 3 years in a loving, caring home. However, my friend sees great potential! She simply needs to know she's loved and cared for and is in need of some gentle training so she understands what is expected of her.
Maybe I shouldn't say this here, but I have to admit, I have a very hard time with humans who get a cute puppy, do no training, in this case, breed the dog and then decided they don't want it. What chance does this poor girl have if someone doesn't see a post and realize they can put some time into this dog and have a wonderful friend?

She's been spayed at the shelter, has lived with other pets (dog & cat) but at the shelter she's being selective. Great Danes are too sensitive to be in a shelter, poor girl is confused and nervous. With proper introductions, she will probably settle in with other pets.

FMI please contact [email protected] , 207-764-3441 shelter or the director at 207-768-1367 Let's get this girl a new, loving home.

IT DOESN’T REALLY HURT, IT JUST…….

Whether it is a discussion about shock collars, citronella sprays, prong-collars, choke chain corrections, “bonking” a dog on the head with a rolled up towel (I mean SERIOUSLY??), throwing a shake can at a dog or forcing them into a down, I am sure you have all heard this before:

It doesn’t really hurt, it just……. (Insert: Startles, interrupts, stops the behaviour, corrects or whatever other sanitized term is used to convince others that what is being done is harmless.)

I want to answer this as simply and briefly as possible:

PUNISHMENT (ADDING SOMETHING TO STOP OR DECREASE A BEHAVIOUR) DOES NOT WORK UNLESS IT IS AVERSIVE.

There is no way around this fact. Stimuli (stuff the dog experiences) are either:

1. PLEASANT
2. AVERSIVE
3. NEUTRAL

Only a pleasant stimulus will increase behaviour.
Only an aversive stimulus will decrease behaviour.
A neutral stimulus has no effect on behaviour.

You cannot divorce a stimulus from its emotional consequences. A pleasant stimulus makes a dog feel good – so the dog will work for more of it. An aversive stimulus makes a dog feel bad, so the dog will work to avoid it. Dogs do not work to gain or avoid neutral stimuli. If a shock collar or vibrating collar or whatever, was not aversive, it would have NO effect on behaviour.

YOU CANNOT USE PUNISHMENT AND AVERSIVE TOOLS WITHOUT EMOTIONAL FALLOUT. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.

THE MOST DANGEROUS PET CHEW EVER: RAWHIDE!

How can one of the most popular chew sticks on the planet be so dangerous for your pets, you ask? I mean, most dogs chew on rawhide for hours on end, and not only does it keep them busy, but they seem to last forever.

Well if you understood what it took to make this toxic “raw” leather stick, you would quickly understand what the problem is.

Aside from the horror stories circulating all over social media these days, of pets needing emergency surgery after consuming rawhide, the majority of pet parents today, especially the newbies, believe that this chew is some sort of dried up meat stick. Let me debunk that myth right away!

A rawhide stick is not the by-product of the beef industry nor is it made of dehydrated meat. Rather, rawhide is the by-product of the “Leather Industry”, so theoretically it is a leather chew. Sounds awesome, right?

“Producing rawhide begins with the splitting of an animal hide, usually from cattle. The top grain is generally tanned and made into leather products, while the inner portion, in its “raw” state, goes to the dogs.” TheBark.com

So, how does this leather, which is conveniently rolled up into pretty shapes, actually get made into those rawhide chews?

Follow along my friends and I will enlighten you on how this hide travels through a leathery process where it transforms from hide to a not-so beautiful, colorful, chew stick. Here is a paraphrased tutorial that was explained by the whole dog journal several years back:

STEP 1: Normally, cattle hides are shipped from slaughterhouses to tanneries for processing. These hides are then treated with a chemical bath to help “preserve” the product during transport to help prevent spoilage.

(No one wants to purchase a black, spoiled rawhide stick!)

Once at the tannery: the hides are soaked and treated with either an ash-lye solution or a highly toxic recipe of sodium sulphide liming. This process will help strip the hair and fat that maybe attached to the hides themselves.

(No, no one wants to see a hairy hide…)

Next on this glorious journey, these hides are then treated with chemicals that help “puff” the hide, making it easier to split into layers.

The outer layer of the hide is used for goods like car seats, clothing, shoes, purses, etc. But, it’s the inner layer that is needed to make the rawhide. (Oh and other things like gelatin, cosmetics, and glue as well!)

STEP 2: Now that we have the inner layer of the hide, it’s time to go to the post-tannery stage! Hides are washed and whitened using a solution of hydrogen peroxide and/or bleach; this will also help remove the smell of the rotten or putrid leather. Bonus!
(Research also shows that other chemicals maybe used here to help the whitening process if the bleach isn’t strong enough.)

STEP 3: Now it’s time to make these whitened sheets of this “leathery by-product” look delicious! So, here is where the artistic painting process comes in.

“Basted, smoked, and decoratively tinted products might be any color (or odor) underneath the coating of (often artificial) dyes and flavors. They can even be painted with a coating of titanium oxide to make them appear white and pretty on the pet store shelves.” - whole-dog-journal.com

“…the Material Safety Data Sheet reveals a toxic confection containing the carcinogen FD&C Red 40, along with preservatives like sodium benzoate. But tracking the effects of chemical exposure is nearly impossible when it’s a matter of slow, low-dose poisoning.”– thebark.com

Ok, now that these hides have been painted, it’s time for the final process.

STEP 4: Getting it to last forever!

Because the FDA does not consider these chews to be food, really it’s a free for all when it comes to the manufacturers of these leather strips, and the products they may want to add to these chews, to get them to last forever. Any sort of glue can be added here to get these bad boys to never come apart.

When tested: Lead, arsenic, mercury, chromium salts, formaldehyde, and other toxic chemicals have been detected in raw hides. So it’s safe to say that any sort of glues can be used as well!

Finally, it’s time to package and attach all the glorious marketing labels to the product.

Check out the fine print warning that’s attached with some of these rawhides:
“Choking or blockages. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.“

(Oh, how lovely…)

And there it is! It’s now ready to be shipped to store shelves where it can be purchased for our loving animal companions.

How do proactive veterinarians feel about these chews?

Here is world-renowned veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker's take on the matter:

“The name ‘rawhide’ is technically incorrect. A more accurate name would be processed-hide, because the skin isn’t raw at all. But the term “rawhide” has stuck.

Rawhide chews start out hard, but as your dog works the chew it becomes softer, and eventually he can unknot the knots on each end and the chew takes on the consistency of a slimy piece of taffy or bubble gum. And by that time your dog cannot stop working it -- it becomes almost addictive.

At this point, there’s no longer any dental benefit to the chew because it has turned soft and gooey, and, in fact, it has become a choking and intestinal obstruction hazard.“

P.S. Ready for the jaw dropper?

An investigation by Humane Society International stated in their report, “In a particularly grisly twist, the skins of brutally slaughtered dogs in Thailand are mixed with other bits of skin to produce rawhide chew toys for pet dogs. Manufacturers told investigators that these chew toys are regularly exported to and sold in U.S. stores.” – dogingtonpost.com

Where are our Great Dane People?
Meet Owen, 2 years old, up to date on vaccines, neutered and microchipped. He is dog and kid friendly. He needs further testing with cats, meaning if they don’t run in fear he can coexist but if they run, he will chase. We are not sure how he will do if he actually was to corner one so need to test further. He is crate trained but he’s been just free roaming and hanging in his current fosters house with her Dane (she hasn’t used the crate in 2 weeks). Proper placement will be crucial in finding Owen his forever home. If you are interested in adopting Owen; please send us a message or visit our website for an application at www.milestofreedomanimalrescue.org

PLEASE SHARE –The San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SFSPCA) has produced an excellent video and article on how prong collars can physically injure your dog and can even cause your dog to become aggressive. You can find a link to those items on my blog, as well as links to other articles which discuss why the use of aversives such as prong, choke, and shock collars are NEVER a good option for training your dog. It is well worth the time and effort to take the time to learn how you can train and manage your dog without hurting them.

Please email [email protected] if you are interested in George!
Please note that we will ask for a vet reference.
Name: George
Age: 7 years
Breed: Great Dane/Pointer mix, XL, 95 #
S*x: Male, neutered
Location: Kennebec County, Maine
VET INFORMATION: George is up to date with rabies and distemper until 2025, has tested heartworm negative this year, is microchipped, and is completely blind. His owners were told that his macular degeneration is due to inbreeding and genetics. George's vet said that his eyes look healthy and have had no discharge whenever they've seen him. George had routine blood work done recently, and everything was normal. His vet's office tells us that, although he is a bit nervous to be there, he does very well with them when they communicate with him respectfully. Sadly, George has no teeth since his previous owners filed them to the gum line. While he is in no pain and experiencing no issues at this time, It is possible that he may need dental care in the future. George is very food sensitive. He is on a strict diet of Taste of the Wild dry food to help him. He rarely eats human food.
OWNER INFORMATION: George has been with his current owners for about a year and a half. George is a loving, outgoing boy who is good with men, women, teenagers, other dogs, and cats. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house. George is housebroken but not leash trained. He knows the cue for "Sit" and will follow you if you tap yourself on the leg as you walk. His owners tell us that he is very eager to learn and could likely learn other cues easily. George is able to navigate new places very well despite his blindness, so adapts to new situations and surroundings easily.
George lives on a farm with many types of birds. He lives successfully with rabbits, fish, reptiles, cats, and other dogs. He is not possessive with treats, toys, or food. However, George has a strong prey drive toward birds. He has killed multiple chickens, ducks, and a pet bird. This is why his owners are looking for a new home for him. When he first came to his owners, if overstimulated, George would try to grab whatever was moving in front of him with his mouth; however, we are told that it was not aggressive or lunge action. He has never broken skin. Tragically, George also does not have any teeth as his original owners used a dremel to file them to the gum line. George has improved and he has had no incidents in almost a year. His owners believe he had learned how to play and rough house with their other dogs and didn't really realize that he couldn't act the same way with humans. After being told no and some light correction he figured out it was not acceptable behavior.
GEORGE'S OWNERS WOULD LIKE YOU TO KNOW: "George is the most loving dog. He has so much love to give and all he ever wants to do is spend time with his owners. He thinks he is a lap dog and often lays on top of us or tries to sit on our laps in the recliner. He really is a great dog."
Does anyone have room for sweet George?
