As the year comes to a close, we reflect on the milestones reached, the events we’ve participated in, and the achievements we’ve celebrated. There is one person we must thank for making it possible, Dr. Mike.

This past December 9th marked the eighth anniversary of his passing, yet his memory and legacy continue to grow stronger each year. In his spirit, we have remained actively involved in the community, just as he would have wanted. This year alone, we connected with the community at Dogtoberfest in Torrance, the Doggie Run 4K/5K in Los Angeles, and joined the community, neighbors and friends walking and running in the Torrance Turkey Trot.

As a hospital, we strive to live out Dr. Mike’s mission of “improving the lives of pets and their humans,” and we hope we are continuing to make him proud.

December is full of holiday fun, cheer and of course, decorations! Our pets love to join in the fun, so here are some tips to keep in mind to keep pets safe around holiday decor.

1) Keep decor such as tinsel, ribbons and strings out of reach so your pet doesn’t chew on it or become entangled.
2) Extinguish candles when you leave the room to prevent your cat or dog from burning their paws or starting a fire.
3) Keep Christmas trees and larger ornaments well anchored to prevent it from tipping over.

Stay safe and Happy Holiday Season!

December is National Cat Lovers Month! If you need another excuse to spoil your cats, this month is devoted to all things cats! Cats are great companions entertaining us with their silliness, surprising us with their cleverness or making our hearts full with how loving they are. Celebrate this month by donating to your local animal shelter, adopting a new feline friend or giving special treats or new toys to the cat you have at home.

It’s that time of the year again, where we gather as a family for good company and delicious food. Since pets are part of our family and we want them to enjoy the holidays, of course we want to share the food! So this is a list of what we can share with our four-legged family members and what not to:

In moderation and without butter, sauces or seasonings feel free to let your pet sample turkey, cranberries, apples, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, carrots and/or peas.

Do not give any buttery, fatty or salty foods, cooked bones, chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions or garlic.

Happy Holidays!

Did you know that there was a whole institute dedicated to the benefits of human-animal connection? The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) has done extensive research in the human-animal bond. Here are a few benefits their research has found: Spending time with your pet can reduce stress and feelings of loneliness. HABRI also found that people with pets walk more and even laugh more than those without pets in the home. So if you wanted more reasons to adopt a pet or spend more time with your beloved pet, now you know!

With fall officially here, all the pumpkin spice flavors are in full swing again! Do you know who else likes pumpkin flavored-things? Your dog! Here is the recipe for Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats: 1 cup of pumpkin puree, 2 cups of flour and ½ cup of peanut butter (that doesn’t contain xylitol or other sweeteners). Optionally, you can add a pinch of cinnamon. First mix the puree and peanut butter together, then add in and combine the flour. Roll it out on a flat surface and use fall inspired cookie cutters. Bake in a preheated oven set for 375 F for 11-12 minutes. Let cool and let your pup enjoy as an occasional Fall inspired treat.

When your pet is in pain their natural instinct is to hide it. This is helpful in the wild, but less helpful at home. Since your dog or cat can’t say what’s wrong and will try to hide their pain, here are a few signs that your pet is in pain so that you are able to take action.

Your cat or dog might eat and play less, and cats may hide. Unusual panting or vocalization can indicate discomfort as well. You might observe your dog overgrooming/licking a particular area or that your cat has stopped grooming as usual. If you think your pet is in pain or discomfort and are unsure what to do, call your veterinarian today!
