When your pet is in pain their natural instinct is to hide it. This is helpful in the wild, but less helpful at home. Since your dog or cat can’t say what’s wrong and will try to hide their pain, here are a few signs that your pet is in pain so that you are able to take action.

Your cat or dog might eat and play less, and cats may hide. Unusual panting or vocalization can indicate discomfort as well. You might observe your dog overgrooming/licking a particular area or that your cat has stopped grooming as usual. If you think your pet is in pain or discomfort and are unsure what to do, call your veterinarian today!

My name is Dr. Jessica Hoffman. I was born and raised in Culver City, California, and earned my undergraduate degree in Animal Health Science from Cal Poly Pomona. After graduation, I worked as a registered veterinary technician for a year and a half before being accepted into Long Island University’s College of Veterinary Medicine at the Harold and Muriel Block Institute (Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine) from which I graduated with my veterinary degree.

Outside of academics and veterinary work, I enjoy spending time with friends and discovering new restaurants. I’m also a proud pet parent to two beloved fur babies- Roxy, a spirited Chihuahua mix, and Jesse, a sweet black cat.

Happy Birthday Marni!
We had a paw-ty last week for Marni’s 12th birthday. There were decorations, hats, songs and of course a kitty- approved cake. Here is a picture of the birthday girl.

We want to share that Dr. Welton will be leaving Western Veterinary Group. While we are sad to see her go, we are incredibly grateful for the care and dedication she has given to our patients and clients over the years. Please join us in wishing Dr. Welton all the best in her future endeavors.

Although we are saying goodbye to a valued doctor, rest assured that your pets will continue to receive the same exceptional care, compassion, and attention from the entire WVG team.

Thank you for being a part of the Western Veterinary Group family. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Does your dog pull or lunge on the leash? Are you unsure of what to do about it? Here are a few tips and tricks to help curb these behaviors and make walking a time to bond and have fun!

1. Once your pet starts to pull to go faster or lunge at an unfamiliar person or animal, stop and pause until your dog stops the behavior and the leash loosens. Then start walking again, stopping and pausing every time he or she creates tension on the leash.

2. Distract your pup from the behavior by commanding the pet to “sit and lay down” or to “leave it.” Once your pet follows the command, reward your pet with praise or a treat and continue the walk.

3. Speaking of rewards, give treats and praise when your pet walks calmly by your side or does not act out when seeing another person or dog.

4. Ditch the retractable leash which allows you less control of your dog and switch to a 6 foot long leash which gives your pet enough space to walk freely but still gives you control if you need to redirect their attention.

5. If all else fails, look into dog training and trainers in your local area to help make the walks fun!
