Today is Mythbuster Monday and we are talking about grain-free diets. It is important to know that there is no medical or nutritional indication for a grain-free diet in dogs. Though still being researched, grain-free diets have been linked to Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is a life-threatening heart disease. If your dog is itchy and experiencing allergy symptoms, there can be many causes and treatments. Sometimes, dogs are prescribed limited ingredient diets to diagnose and treat allergies. These diets can be grain-free. However, no grain-free therapeutic diets by Hill’s, Purina, or Royal Canin have been linked to diet-associated DCM. Please speak with your veterinarian before considering a grain-free diet for your pet or if your pet is experiencing allergy symptoms. Today is World Mosquito Day!

At every annual exam, we ask about heartworm prevention no matter the time of year. Why do we ask? Because even though we are in New England and have snow in the winter, we have had some warmer winters where we still see mosquitoes and ticks in our area. We never really have a mosquito "season" and it is best to protect your pet from heartworm disease year-round.

Welcome to TAH Mythbuster Mondays! Many people think dry food is better for their cats. In reality, wet food is beneficial for many reasons. Many cats do not drink much water. There are things you can do to entice your cat to drink more water, but feeding a diet with a higher water content can be a great first step. Cats are prone to illnesses such as kidney issues as they age. Dehydration can be a complicating factor, so it is important to make sure your cat is hydrated. The water in wet food also keeps cats fuller for longer and prevents them from eating too many calories. Obesity is implicated in many diseases for cats and can easily be prevented.
