Today is Mythbuster Monday and we are talking about grain-free diets. It is important to know that there is no medical or nutritional indication for a grain-free diet in dogs. Though still being researched, grain-free diets have been linked to Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is a life-threatening heart disease. If your dog is itchy and experiencing allergy symptoms, there can be many causes and treatments. Sometimes, dogs are prescribed limited ingredient diets to diagnose and treat allergies. These diets can be grain-free. However, no grain-free therapeutic diets by Hillβs, Purina, or Royal Canin have been linked to diet-associated DCM. Please speak with your veterinarian before considering a grain-free diet for your pet or if your pet is experiencing allergy symptoms.
