Antelopes are a diverse group of herbivorous mammals belonging to the Bovidae family, which also includes cattle, goats, and sheep. Renowned for their graceful appearance and remarkable agility, antelopes are found in various habitats across Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe. These majestic creatures come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from the diminutive dik-diks to the towering elands. Known for their distinctive horns, which vary in shape and size between species, antelopes use these structures for defense, dominance displays, and sometimes even as tools for foraging. August is the month for antelopes. Everyday we will explore different antelope species everyday.

In 1964, Roger Arliner Young, the first African American woman to receive a doctorate degree in zoology, died.

Young was born in 1899 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, and raised in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. She earned her bachelorโ€™s degree from Howard University in 1923 and her masterโ€™s degree from the University of Chicago in 1926.

In 1924, her article โ€œOn the Excretory Apparatus in Parameciumโ€ was published in the journal Science, making her the first African American woman to research and professionally publish in her field. In 1940, she earned her Ph. D. in Zoology from the University of Pennsylvania.

After obtaining her doctorate, Young held teaching positions at several colleges and wrote several books. (Today in African American History, 2023)
