Let’s talk about horses who run at jumps…

I have yet to meet a horse that flats normal and then takes over and runs at the jump that is an actual “confident” jumping horse. To be clear I think being “brave” is different than confident. And of course there are always exceptions.

Take my little Z man here for example. Lovely lovely flat ride, used to always compensate by running at the jump when we imported him.

Fast forward a year and a half of jumping lower jumps and taking our time (he just turned 6 in Oct). So it got really good at home and then we would go to the show and he would lose that rideable canter and tense up and in defense of being overwhelmed would start to run before and after the jump.

The solution… time and patience, practice at shows without pressure. Lower jumps and confident rides. Now, he’s finally getting that he can soften at a show and relax like we do at home. So in time he gets to jump higher if he stays relaxed and confident.

I don’t always get it right. Last winter I threw him in the 3’ hunters because he was running at the jumps, and I thought at the time let’s give him some real fill and see if that helps him back off.

Dumb, I knew better but I was in a hurry. And he jumped all of them but he was tense and pulling and running and going around with his mouth open.

The solution: I took all the pressure off. Told him we aren’t in a hurry, I have two kids and a busy life and who cares if we get there fast or slow. I have time. He blossomed into a lovely boy with a fantastic jump. So here we are jumping 2’6 with a slow easy canter, auto changes and all the things. So maybe a couple more months of low jumps and then we move on 🥰

My point is… slow down when things aren’t working. They don’t care about our goals or what we want. That’s our job to care about their needs and figure out how to communicate with them.

I don’t talk about the struggles much but I probably should. We can all post pretty winning pictures but this is the stuff that gets you to those pictures. ❤️

2nd in the flat and 4th in her first trip out of 11. Not too shabby for the first move up!

Reve de Vaillant, my two year old miracle baby from Amely. This sweet boy gets fancier everyday. We went to our first BWP inspection and he was awarded premium and won his class (he was the only one in it 😂). He was also by far the best behaved AND he’s intact so that’s saying something. Love this guy ❤️
