Does your dog shred things that are not theirs like pillows, shoes or other things when you are not home? What about counter surfing and trash raiding? Do they still have accidents in the house? Have you seen that “guilty” look like they just know that they did something wrong?

That look that many people assume is guilt, is actually appeasement or even fear. The truth is- your dog WANTS to please you, they probably just don’t know how. They might also be acting on impulse when they do the wrong thing due to underlying anxiety, health issues, or unmet needs for enrichment.

It is important to address the underlying cause of unwanted behaviors before coming up with a plan to address the behavior itself!

🛑Stop taking your dog to the dog park! And don’t greet every dog that you see on leash!

These types of introductions are stressful for most dogs. Some dogs have a more resilient temperament and can adjust and enjoy themselves. Many dogs don’t tolerate certain behaviors from other dogs. If your dog continues to have negative experiences while meeting dogs, this will increase the chance that your dog will develop some behavior problems.

Set your dog up for success! Talk with friends/neighbors and find someone with a well socialized dog and set up a puppy play date (if your dog enjoys this type of thing).

Otherwise, you can find other ways to meet your dog’s needs through enrichment and exploration!

Have you ever heard that you should NEVER allow your dog on furniture? If that is your preference, then that is fine! But you should not feel bad if you have allowed your dog to cuddle with you on the couch or sleep in your bed!

It is important to set some boundaries that work for your dog and lifestyle that make you happy with your relationship and your dog’s behavior! This can look different depending on each individual situation!

Your dog should NOT sleep in your bed if you have a baby in the room. It is not safe to allow your dog to have unsupervised access to a baby at any time.

If your dog has some guarding instincts, it is important to allow them to express guarding behavior in appropriate ways and under certain circumstances. If they have chosen to guard your bed or another space, it is recommended that you prevent rehearsal of that behavior and replace it with something else while meeting your dog’s needs another way.

It is not necessary to reach your hand out to a dog for them to sniff. If you want to let them sniff you, let them approach you first while you remain still! And then pay close attention to the dog’s body language before petting them.

In many situations, you don’t really need to pet dogs you don’t know, so don’t! The dog may be training, or could be anxious or fearful in a new situation.

In other cases, you may need to meet the dog because you are the pet sitter, or you are trying to help a lost dog, or for many other reasons!

We love the phrase from Family Paws- “Invites decrease bites.”

If the dog does not come when invited, that’s okay! If you are in public just skip greeting that dog. If you are at a friend’s house, ignore them for a while or toss a few treats over (without trying to lure them to you) and over time they may warm up to you! Let them have space and take their time.

If the dog approaches when invited and you see relaxed body movements, relaxed ears, eyes, tail, and muzzle, then you can gently pet with one hand. Make sure to avoid reaching over the dog, hugging them, or petting sensitive areas like ears and paws upon first meeting them.

Does your dog like to meet new people?

Be patient with your dog!

Training your dog will take time. Your dog is not fully mature until they reach at least 18 months-2 years old!

Each skill that you are trying to develop in your dog may be mastered at a different rate. They may figure out how to sit on cue within a day or two.
But learning to give attention in busy environments? This skill may take months!

Punishment is reinforcing to the punisher. What does this mean? Well, if you start getting impatient with your dog and you punish them, you will see results quickly sometimes. Why? Because your dog is afraid of the punishing stimulus. What happens next? You resort to punishment more often because of that time you saw quick results. Without realizing it, you begin to punish your dog more often than you reinforce them. This deteriorates your relationship with your dog, frustrates your dog, and may lead to some serious fallout like aggression, anxiety, or reactivity. These are BIG risks! Living with an aggressive dog can be really challenging.

Positive reinforcement training DOES work for every dog! Your expectations need to be realistic and you need to have some patience, consistency, and good plans in place. With our training methods, you don’t have to take those risks of behavioral fallout!

Happy Halloween!

Remember:

There may be trick or treaters coming door to door! Plan ahead and walk your dog or let them outside before all of the activity begins.

🛏️Take them to their crate or safe space to relax.

🍬Give them some yummy enrichment to enjoy!

😰Watch for signs of stress if you decide to let your dog participate in the fun.

👻Don’t force your dog to wear a costume if they are uncomfortable with it.

🍭Proactively pair unexpected or scary things with reinforcement.

🎃👻Have a safe and fun Halloween!👻🎃

Are you feeling frustrated and embarrassed by your dog’s responses to things in the environment?

Stop training your dog!

It can be very frustrating to give cues that your dog won’t respond to!

Asking them to “leave it” or “sit/stay” in the presence of something that they are truly afraid of is unlikely to work.

Counterconditioning and desensitization can be used to help change your dog’s emotional state so that they don’t feel the need to react. Instead, they will learn to pair their triggers with something positive!

Visit horizondogs.com if you need help learning to apply counterconditioning and desensitization techniques!

Dogs think and learn very similarly to humans!

Think about your favorite learning experiences- when someone taught you to ride a bike or read a book, what helped the most?

Option1: Encouraging you, showing you specifically what to do, breaking it down into small steps, and positive praise/rewards?

Option 2: Telling you every time that you did it wrong, saying no over and over, yelling at you, or physically punishing you?

Most of us would probably choose option 1!

If you want to keep your dog motivated and teach them new skills, it requires patience, understanding, and positive reinforcement.

Dogs are different from humans in many ways but their brains function very much the same way. It is important to take into account the long term effects of your chosen training methods. Although punishment can lead to quick results (due to behavioral suppression), using it over time can lead to anxiety, fear and aggression in your dog. Sticking to positive training methods doesn’t lead to these serious side effects!

“It’s all how you raise them.”

This phrase is commonly used in the dog community with good intentions!

However, it sets people up for disappointment when they feel that they tried to do everything right and their dog is still not behaving how they had hoped.

📣We’re here to spread the word:
It’s not ALL how you raise them!

Your dog’s behavior is a combination of factors including their:

📖L-learning
🏡E- environment
🧬G- genetics
🐶S- self

Once we figure out WHY your dog’s behavior is the way that it is, we can formulate a plan on how to modify it!

Tail wagging is not necessarily a sign of a friendly, approachable dog!

Looking at the dog’s tail alone does not provide enough information.

Dogs can switch from being a little excited to becoming over-aroused or nervous/fearful pretty quickly sometimes.

Don’t approach a dog just because you see a wagging tail.

Don’t teach your child to do this either.

It is best not to greet dogs on leash in public places or stray dogs that you don’t know.

Interpreting dog body language can be difficult sometimes and takes practice.

You don’t have to feel bad about reinforcing your dog with food!

This is one of the easiest ways to build your relationship with your dog.

If you are always telling your dog “no” instead of telling them “yes, I like when you do that” then they are going to have a really hard time figuring out what it is that you want from them.

If you have a dog that doesn’t seem driven by their daily food, then you can try real meat, cheese, peanut butter, or any other dog safe food. Dogs have different preferences just like people!

You can also make food more fun by playing games and using it as enrichment!

In a few weeks, you might have a lot of visitors coming to your door dressed in all types of costumes! While this is a fun event for many, it may not be very fun for your dog. You know your dog best! Prepare ahead of time. Come up with a plan to help your dog feel safe and comfortable on Halloween and on Trick or Treat night. If your dog is happy to be involved, then that is great! Either way, it is important to pay attention to your dog’s body language and respect their space. Make sure that you are not forcing them to do something that they are uncomfortable with and give them something that they like for participating! 🎃

Harnesses do not cause pulling!
What is reinforced gets repeated. If your dog finds pulling reinforcing, you may want to replace that with increased attention during walks. This can be done using a regular flat collar or a harness. We don’t need any fancy equipment to get started with this concept!

Resource guarding is a natural behavior in all dogs! If they were not in a home environment, engaging in this behavior would allow them to survive. Playing with your dog’s food is a common recommendation from many people in the pet industry. However, doing this does not really teach the dog anything! The dog is not really forming a positive association with what you are doing when you do this and the wrong association could be made. Instead, you should build a positive relationship with your dog and build trust! Bring them good things, toss a treat their way as you walk by (from a safe enough distance), and allow them to enjoy meals in peace. You can also teach them to happily trade their toys and lower value items first while getting higher value reinforcement from you! How you approach this issue can vary depending on the situation. Don’t feel like you have to do it alone! We can help! Reach out to us by visiting horizondogs.com!

Dog Myth Monday:
“Bring your baby’s blanket home for your dog to smell.”

Most expectant parents have heard this one somewhere.

While trying this does not hurt, it isn’t exactly helpful advice!

There are many ways to prepare your dog for life with baby:

✅Make sure that your dog is comfortable separating from your family sometimes
✅Set up some baby gates, a playpen, and any other barriers that you may need
✅Make sure that your dog can sleep separately from you
✅Desensitize your dog to baby equipment
✅Desensitize your dog to novel sounds
✅Switch up your daily routine with your dog so that they are prepared for it when baby comes
✅Reduce attention seeking behaviors that you don’t want your dog to engage in
✅Teach your dog alternate behaviors that WILL get them some attention
✅Practice giving cues to your dog while your hands are full
✅Learn your dog’s stress signals and how to respond

If you need help with any of these, please reach out to us! horizondogs.com

Many people go about their day not really noticing the subtle things that their dog does when there are environmental changes. Sometimes dogs react in a really obvious way and sometimes their stress signals are more discreet. Either way- it is important to start paying attention to what your dog does when something different is going on.

Do they leave the room when you start the vacuum cleaner?

Do they startle or freeze when they see that new chair that you added to the living room?

Do they refuse to go outside after a storm?

How does this information help?
Well, if you are expecting a big change in the near future- like welcoming a new baby or moving to a new house, you can plan ahead! Set your dog up for success BEFORE making a big change.

We discussed this in our Family Paws class this week and it can be essential to adjusting to life with dogs and babies!

Dog Myth Monday:
Many people believe that their dog is trying to dominate them because they see certain behaviors like:

Jumping
Pawing
Barking
Play biting
Leash pulling
Walking ahead

(Just to name a few examples)

The truth is- reinforcement drives behavior!
Some of these are attention seeking behaviors. Your dog does them because in the past, you or someone else gave them attention (reinforcement) for doing them! Your dog might be bored or seeking connection with you. Some of these other behaviors (like leash pulling) can happen because the environment is so exciting/reinforcing.

Whatever you do, don’t punish your dog for doing these things. There are many factors that need to be considered when reducing unwanted behaviors. These include your dog’s unmet needs, physical health, and removing the things that are reinforcing the unwanted behavior.

📣This is so important!

Notice that none of these have anything to do with training your dog or asking your dog to do something. That’s because safe interactions should not be up to your dog and what they can handle or tolerate.

These examples are specifically listed because so many people mistake these things for being cute. As a mother myself, I once thought that a couple of these things were cute at one time too (especially because I have one very tolerant dog). Unfortunately, your child will learn that what they can do with one dog is an okay way to interact with any dog and that simply is not the case. I have had to re-teach my own child how to safely interact with dogs.

So how can your child interact with your dog safely?
Stay tuned for lots of fun ideas and child/dog safety tips!
