We work tirelessly every day to help animals in our community return to their owners, get to rescues, or find new homes. Rarely are we faced with the need to euthanize due to illness, injury, or behavior that's deemed not correctable.

In all of 2023, we only had to euthanize three animals. Two of those were court ordered for repeated viscous attacks. The third was due to severe injury that wasn't treatable. This year is starting out rough, and we want to be transparent about the reasons why.

In March, we authorized three cats to be euthanized. None of those animals were ever in our shelter, but strays in our jurisdiction. They each had severe injury or illness that the veterinary clinics treating each of them deemed euthanasia necessary.

We had a group of five young dogs that appeared to be from one or two related litters abandoned in Garland on March 27th. They were malnourished to the point we had to carefully reintroduce food over several days. There was added difficulty due to severe diarrhea. They were possibly on their own for an extended period of time as they had an aggressive pack mentality. We worked hard to thoughtfully separate some and double up others to help them feel more at ease, but nothing worked. They were attacking each other as well as constantly trying to attack other animals in the shelter.

After two weeks of careful observation and interactions, we asked a rescue to help us with behavior evaluations and they agreed these pups had dangerous behaviors that made them unsafe as family pets and a danger to other animals. It was decided that humane euthanasia was the ethical outcome for them.

We work diligently with a vast network of shelters, rescues and veterinary clinics to help animals in our care have happier outcomes, even when they need extensive medical treatment. All of these animals were extreme cases, and we firmly believe euthanasia was the right choice for each of them.

If you have inquired about rescue or adoption of these animals, we are sorry to share this unfortunate update. Please understand we made a difficult choice for the right reasons.

UPDATE 3/22/2024
This sweet boy was transferred to a veterinary clinic to complete his stray hold since he needed medical care that couldn't wait. They determined he was suffering from a severe abscess, diabetes and end stage congestive heart failure. We made the tough decision to have him euthanized since the veterinarians felt it was the most humane option.

Do you know me?

I met a nice lady and asked her for cuddles and food. I'm a bit of a hot mess right now, so she tried finding my family. She didn't think I could wait much longer to get medical care, so she helped me get to the animal shelter. They found an awesome clinic able to help me get feeling better during my stray hold. I'm in good hands, but I'd love to get back home.

We've got two young, sweet dogs desperately needing homes. We'll be holding our first adoption event of the year this Saturday at IFA Country Store in Tremonton from 10am-2pm. They're a little big to fit in Easter baskets, but they'd fit nicely in a kiddie pool!

UPDATE 3/11/2024
Return to Owner Confirmed
---

Do you know me?

This dog was picked up by a good Samaritan yesterday, March 8th, in Garland and passed on to someone else to hold while searching for the owner. Animal Control is concerned that this breed is at high risk of theft and they'd like to confirm she got back to her rightful owner.

Please message the shelter if you are the owner or know who she may belong to, so we can confirm you have your dog back and take her off our worry list.

Remember to License Your Dogs!

- Dog licenses can be obtained at the Tremonton City office at 102 S Tremont St during business hours. Call 435-257-9500 if you have questions about dog licensing.

- A current Rabies certificate is required at the time of licensing. Contact your veterinarian if you need to have your dog vaccinated.

- When you license your dog, you will receive an ID tag with the license number. Place the ID tag on your dog’s collar, along with their current Rabies tag, so that they can be identified if they get lost. Remember to update your contact information with the city office if you move.

- Having your dog licensed is incredibly important, even if they never leave your property, as unforeseen circumstances happen regularly.

- Dogs can affect the health and well being of our community. So, for everyone's protection, Tremonton City regulates dog ownership.
