Not only does the egg industry cause great harm to millions of chickens every year, but now eggs are becoming less and less affordable. Maybe it's time to look for an alternative. Here are some simple ways to replace eggs when baking.

Swain is working on growing some new feathers! Once a year chickens' feathers fall out and then are replaced with brand new ones. This process is called molting, and most birds do it in the fall. If you look close on Swain's neck, you can see some pin feathers coming in under his old feathers.

Roosters like Sion are some of the most misunderstood individuals. Roosters get a bad reputation for being loud and aggressive. If you have purchased chicks and end up with a rooster(or more than one), please give them a chance! There are not enough sanctuary homes for every rooster and the best chance he has at a good life is with you. We are always here to assist with tips on keeping roosters with your flock so please reach out!

Leona wants you all to know that curvy girls deserve love too ā¤ļø As a Cornish Cross chicken, Leona was brought into the world to be killed for someone's meal at only 8 weeks old. By some miracle, Leona escaped that fate and came to live with us. Because of selective breeding, Leona must be on a special low-calorie diet to maintain a healthy weight. So far she is doing great and she is now over 1 year old!

I know we haven't posted in a long time! We were limiting visitors and contact to our residents during the spring and early summer because of the avian flu that was going around. Now that it's been hot, cases have slowed down considerably. We are still here, just doing our thing.

Roosters all deserve a little patience and understanding ā¤ļø

Each Spring millions of roosters are dumped at parks, thrown out of cars, locked out of their coops and beheaded. All because of their natural instincts. It is a tale as old as time. Your sweet and cuddly boy suddenly lunges at you with his feet, nipping and flapping his wings. He begins to chase you off and scare you. At between 6-9 months old cockerel's are flooded with a surge of hormones activating their primal instincts. Which is to protect their hens by any means necessary including death. It is incredibly frustrating and confusing if you don't know how to begin to adjust this behavior. This aggressive stage is usually just a phase and calms down after their first year. Training and patience are key, and affection and attention are the best cures for naughty boys. Aggression breeds aggression. Kicking, swatting and hitting will only make things worse. Having a rooster around is beneficial to your flock. Your hens will be protected and your heart will be full. Please give them a chance, they are worth it!ā¤

Chickens are descended from a tropical jungle bird, and while they do have some downy feathers, they are not nearly as tolerant of cold as wild birds or waterfowl.

Facts about Chickens and Cold Weather
Chickens with large, compact bodies are more tolerant of the cold then smaller breeds (especially bantams) and linear shaped birds due to less surface area. Silkies and naked neck breeds have less insulation due to their unique feathering.
Chickens who are older, molting, special needs, sick, underweight, have underlying circulation or heart issues, injured, or lower in the pecking order may have more difficulty maintaining their core body temperature without an external heat source, leading to frostbite and death.
Prolonged or extreme cold exposure is very stressful on a chickenā€™s body. This can weaken their immune system, leading to immunosuppression which can make them more susceptible to illness and trigger stress-induced diseases such as Marekā€™s disease and Mycoplasma.

Today, KFC released Beyond Fried Chicken nationwide. It's the first time that a plant based chicken has been released on this scale in restaurants in the US. It's made of all plant based ingredients! This is amazing news for our chicken friends. Every time someone orders Beyond Fried Chicken instead of regular KFC, they are saving at least one life. This is huge! Also, the nuggets are incredibly good. *Disclaimer: they are cooked alongside KFC's chicken so if cross contamination is a concern for you, be aware. Save a life, eat Beyond.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! And thank you to Sweet Hazel & Co for including us in your giving tree this year. We received a donation for our ornament from one of our followers! Any donation we get goes directly to caring for our chickens. Pictured is the giving tree and a cake that was made for my birthday back in September by the talented people at Sweet Hazel & Co.

Me: Buddy, it's going to snow more this weekend.

Nocturne and Rengar followed the leaf path to the playhouse to survey the snow. Braum appreciates our efforts but says no thanks I'll stay inside for now. We put leaves or straw down when there is snow on the ground so they can go outside without risking frostbite on their toes. They usually stay on the paths we make for them.

The morning after the storm. You can't even see the little coops behind the snow on the fence. Most of our chickens did not want to come outside, but we put some straw down so they could grab some food and water. Some of the fences got pushed down by the snow so we will have to survey and fix those when it melts.

Varus is really one of the most handsome and sweet roosters I know. At night he tucks himself behind the blanket on the coop wall and snuggles with Bard. He is seriously huge but doesn't know it. Varus is yet another rooster that was seen as worthless because he doesn't lay eggs. He has worth as an individual here just by being his cute self.

Isn't Rakan beautiful? He's a survivor of cockfighting and he obviously saw some things before he came to us. We don't know if he was ever forced to fight before being rescued, but he did have his comb and wattles removed without anesthetic. He most likely lived in a very small pen or crate by himself. Cockfighting is still a real problem in the US despite being illegal.

This is Vex. This summer Vex was convinced she needed to hatch some eggs. However, just because a hen is broody, does not mean they need to hatch chicks. Most broody hens give up after a couple weeks if they don't have fertilized eggs. We don't want to contribute to the huge unwanted rooster problem so we don't let broody hens hatch eggs. Collecting eggs each day and moving the hen from the nest along with giving her a snack will help her get over it quickly. Isn't Vex adorable?

It is sadly rooster dumping season once again. People who got chicks in the spring are realizing some are boys right about now. They're either not allowed to have them or don't want them. We own one of the only houses in our town that allows roosters. Resources for rehoming roosters to good homes are also scarce but we have been able to help a few so far this year. Please don't buy baby chicks!!

We rescued this little guy this weekend and helped him get to a forever home. He was given away to a family with no chicken experience at a rodeo. They had no idea what to do with him. Please don't give animals away at events or fundraisers! They often don't end up as lucky as little Roo man here.

Gwen got a little soggy in the storm that blew past. Gwen was being given away for free due to reportedly being a bully at her old home. Most of the comments suggested doing unkind things to her, but we knew she could behave if given a change of scenery. Gwen is such a sweetheart. She loves to follow people around and will let anyone pick her up and snuggle. She was introduced to one of our small flocks and is still at the bottom of the pecking order. She has not bullied anyone. Flock dynamics vary greatly and changing up individuals can sometimes make a huge difference if they're not getting along where they are.

When you get tagged in a post about a stray rooster who's been hanging around a parking lot for weeks, you grab your gloves, some chicken food, and a crate. Then you go rescue him! Galio will be safe here. After a quarantine period we will try to integrate him with our bachelor flock.

Our chonky boys Gragas, Rumble, Rammus, and Blitz were rescued by this organization in NYC last year and delivered to us. They are some of the sweetest, funniest, cutest chickens we know. If anyone can help by adopting, donating or even sharing information from their page, it can help save lives!

Do you have a home for Kaporos survivors this year? Please Private Message Jill Carnegie to discuss.

NYC Kaporos begins September 9th this year. There is only one Official Rescue Crew sanctioned by and partnering with our campaign. Last year, the Official Rescue Crew rescued and placed 510 survivors! We cannot guarantee the tactics or practices of other rescue teams. If you wish to check on whether a rescuer is a part of the Official Rescue Crew, simply contact our coordinator, Jill, as noted above.

This little kid is Kennen (formerly Keira). He was rescued by a kind person who works at a public farm. He was placed in with other chicks much bigger than him and was getting injured by them. He grew up in an apartment but like most roosters isn't able to use his inside only voice. We introduced him to our other teenagers Annie and Leona, and they're all getting along just fine. Thank you to his rescuers for helping him and bringing him to us!
