Have you ever heard of an umbilical hernia on a horse and wondered how they get them and do they need to be fixed?

Umbilical hernias are typically seen in young animals and generally either (1) are inherited orย  (2) develop due to umbilical infections. Just like how we need regular dental check-ups, our four legged friends need them too. The health of a horseโ€™s mouth greatly impacts its well-being, behavior, and performance.

** FUN FACT - Horses teeth never stop growing **

Because their lower jaw is narrower than their upper jaw, the constant grinding causes the teeth to become misshapen and sharp. This can cause ulcers on the cheeks and discomfort eating. Floating the teeth means filing down the sharp edges and smoothing the surface.
Some signs to look for if your horse needs a float areโ€ฆ.

* Quidding (dropping large amounts of feed)
* Not wanting to eat hay/grain
* Tilting head to one side or the other
* Increased salivation
* Losing weight
* Asymmetric swelling (can be soft or hard)
* Resistant in on side of the bridle
* One sided nasal discharge with odor
* Bad odor coming from the mouth

Here we have Dr. Center preforming a float. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿด๐Ÿ˜

The most common knee injuries associated with dogs is either a torn or ruptured CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) which is similar to a torn ACL in humans. There are 2 ligaments that hold the knee in place and keep the bones from sliding. When the ligament is torn, the tibia slides forward compared to the femur, causing the dog to walk abnormally and can be quite painful.
One way to fix this type of an jury is to preform a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) Surgery. This surgery helps return the angle of the knee back to a normal degree, adding support and stability.
This is accomplished by making a curved cut in the tibia, rotating the piece backwards until the right angle is achieved, and then installing a metal plate to hold everything together. A TPLO is the best surgical option for young, active, large breed dogs.

Dr. Bevan performed a TPLO on a yellow Labrador Retriever this week that had ruptured his CCL in his right knee. Surgery went great and Dr. Bevan was able to realign everything back to the normal positions! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฅฐ Now our friend can run and play like a happy, carefree dog!
