I was born and grew up in Michigan near Detroit. We relocated to Missouri when I was 13 years old. My passion for dogs and their behavior started when I was having trouble with bullies in my teens. My parents got me a puppy to help with the depression I was experiencing. His name was Sam and he loved me. He was my best friend. I knew he was listening by watching his body language. y Nurse for several years before I moved to dog training. A lot was changing in nursing at that time and it just wasn't what I loved about it anymore. I first started working at the local animal shelter as a volunteer. I worked mostly with dogs that were unsocialized and had other behavior problems. In a couple of years I became the shelter's Animal Care Specialist. I was in charge of the animals' mental and physical well being, as well as the shelter's adoption counselor. A couple of years later I accepted the General Manager post. I loved the job, but I wasn't able to spend as much time one-on-one with the dogs. That is why I decided to do private, in-home dog training, where I feel I can be of most help to dogs and their owners/guardians. My favorite dog related reading is The Other End of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D. She is my favorite animal behaviorist. She also has published important booklets. I learned a lot about separation anxiety with I'll Be Home Soon and The Cautious Canine for dogs that have fear issues. Meghan Giacopelli -

Thank you so much to the donors that made this happen for this gas station stray. Harris is doing great and is scheduled for dental and neutering the 6th of September. He could still use an indoor home. We can only provide an outdoor home with a lot of support, but not ideal. He is very affectionate, calm, likes to lay on the porch - he's on leash - making biscuits and rubbing around your legs. Very handsome. He's been OK with our other cats, male and female. Doesn't freak out around our dogs. We can't keep him inside because we have one dog that has high cat prey drive.

Brothers Mekhi and Membou passed their "final exam"! There have different personalities, but both are super sweet and I really enjoyed working with them and their owner, Brenda Ferguson.

How old were you when you got your 1st dog? What breed was/is it and what was it's name?
My first dog was named Sam. I was 16, I think. He was a mixed breed, entirely the color of a copper penny. People thought he was a pure bred. He was athletic, sweet, devoted. He got me through rough times.

Commands taught are sit, stay, down, come, leave it, and walking on a loose leash, plus addressing common behavior issues. Consult for behavior issues alone is $25 a visit. This curly ball of fur is Jack Jack with his owner, Amber Miller. He is just a pup, but he did very well on his 'final exam'. Such a sweety.

I'm still here! I was unwell and in the hospital, came back to training then contracted COVID. We also had to euthanize our two oldest dogs due to old age issues in one month.
I will be ready for training at the end of November. I am giving a Christmas discount of $15 by signing up from Dec 1st to Dec 31st. Total will be $100 flat for an 8to10 week course. I also allow people to break up their payment into 2 payments.

This is Bertha and her teammate Seth Gottman. After lots of hard work Bertha was able to graduated her basic dog training. She is on her way to becoming Seth's service dog and has already started her public access training. She has great potential. I'm very excited for them!

Betty has overcome so much! As a pup she grew up in shelters and a series of foster homes and is battling a serious seizure disorder, but she did it! Betty's rescuers are Kelly and Len Grayson.

One Smart Dog is excited to announce a group training class starting April 15th 2023.
Classes will be held at an outdoor venue in Trenton Mo 3-4pm on Saturdays. It will be an 8 to 9 wk course.

This course is for dogs 3 months and older. Handlers must be 14 yrs or older. Dogs will need to have proof of current vaccinations - parvo/distemper, rabies and bordatella. The fee is $130 and is due before or at the first class.
