With the end of the year quickly approaching, our practice manager enlisted Huxley to help her get all the reporting and paperwork done. As you can tell, they are both hard at it and very focused on the task at hand!
Huxley was in today for his annual vaccines, heartworm test, and ProHeart 12 injection (heartworm preventative that lasts 12 months). He was hanging out all day while his mom was at work so he decided he might as well pitch in!

💥💥Interesting case Friday💥💥

Dr. Revay saw a rabbit earlier this week that appeared similar on physical exam to the rabbit pictured below. What could be wrong with this rabbit?

Answer: The rabbit is showing vestibular neurological abnormalities. Dr. Revay’s top suspicion was for a small microsporidian parasitic organism called Encephalitozoon cuniculi. This organism primarily affects the brain, spinal cord, and kidneys. Dr. Revay prescribed the rabbit an anti-parasitic to get him back to happy hopping around soon.

E. Cuniculi is also a zoonotic organism which means it can be spread from rabbits to humans! This case is an important reminder to practice good handwashing hygiene after interacting with all animals to prevent transmission of diseases between animals and people.

We are shouting a huge Happy Birthday to Dr. Revay! (Her birthday was yesterday) If you see her this week make sure to tell her happy birthday! We are so lucky to have her on our AVC team 😊

Hopefully she got in a bunch of cuddles with sweet Kiya! Yes, you read that correctly! Over the several months Kiya has been with us looking for a home, she wore down Dr. Revay and got to join her crew ❤️ We think they are the perfect pair (we may be a little biased 🤷‍♀️)

We are still looking for homes for these 2 sweethearts! Carl and Charles came to us terrified and very undernurished. In just the few weeks we have had them, they have come out of their shells and showed their personalities! They are 6month old lab mix puppies who love attention. Carl is more outgoing while Charles is more laid back. They have been vaccinated, neutered, and received flea/tick/heartworm preventatives. Contact us during hours for more information about adopting them!

UPDATE: Diesel is back home with his family! Thank you all for sharing and helping get him back home ❤️

This boy was brought in this morning by the city. He was found breaking his diet and eating pizza for breakfast over by Harris and 1st. He doesn't have a microchip to find his owners so we are needing help spreading the word that he is here. If you know who he is please contact our office. Owners will need proof of rabies vaccination and ownership.

We are so thankful for all of our wonderful clients every day, but today we want to give a special shout-out to one of our amazing clients who went above and beyond by bringing us a beautiful and absolutely delicious spread of homemade goodies for Thanksgiving! 🦃🍂 (somehow I missed getting a picture of the chocolate zucchini bread earlier and it was already gone by the time I realized it wasn't in the picture 😂)

A dilemma as old as time... to blanket or not to blanket? Unfortunately, there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Whether your horse needs a blanket during the winter months depends on many factors such as their coat, the weather and their living situation.

💉 The literal “shot heard round the world”. It sounds like a horse received Flunixin or Banamine intramuscularly on an episode of last night? We would like to remind everyone that despite being labeled for intra-muscular use, horses should only ever receive this drug orally or intra-venously. Something that the folks at Yellowstone would need to be on the lookout for after this misplaced administration would be signs of gas and swelling under the neck or a painful injection site. Administering IM banamine to a horse can cause clostridial myositis and can lead to a serious infection that requires surgical and antibiotic intervention. Despite intervention, these infections can be fatal.

Kiya and Sadie are looking for forever families and are wanting to be able to add to the list of things they are thankful for this Thanksgiving.

🐶 Sadie is a 9 month old Blue Heeler/Australian Shepherd cross. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines. She has lots of energy and would love to have a farm to run and play on or a large back yard. She does not like being on a tie out. She is good with dogs and children.

🐶 Kiya is a Shepherd mix around 2 years old and VERY intelligent. She is up to date on vaccines, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, spayed, potty trained, knows basic commands, and is learning the gentle leader very quickly!

Interesting case Friday!

This large dog came in suddenly lethargic, not eating or drinking that morning, vomiting, and very weak. She collapsed out in the yard just before her owners brought her to us. We took her straight to the x-ray room and saw this! What is your diagnosis, and what do we do next?!

Update: this was a GDV (Gastric Dilation and Volvulus) which is an emergent and life-threatening condition. Large deep chested breeds are predisposed to this condition. When this occurs, they have to go straight to surgery to have the condition corrected. We decompress the stomach and then "tack" it (suture it) to the inside body wall to keep it from reoccurring. This procedure is called a gastropexy and can be performed as a preventative measure as well before a GDV occurs.
