SPCA of Hancock County The SPCA of Hancock County is entirely community-funded - our animals rely on generous donors like you! https://www.spcahancockcounty.org/donate/

Thank you for visiting the SPCA of Hancock County! Founded in 1911, the SPCA of Hancock County, Maine, is a life-saving organization committed to providing shelter and care for abandoned, stray and surrendered animals. Since opening the doors of our expanded facility in Trenton in October 2010, our organization has found homes for thousands of dogs and cats. We are also focused on community outrea

ch and education on proper and humane animal care. Due to the pandemic and concern for the safety of our staff and volunteers, all visits to the shelter are by appointment only. Please contact us to schedule an appointment to adopt, surrender a pet or stray animal, or with any other requests. We are accepting donations of pet food items, pet supplies, and anything you might find on our Amazon Wish List. These can be left at our front door or by the Volunteer Entrance. These entrances are regularly checked by staff for any dropped-off donations. If you're interested in volunteering with us, we would love to meet you. We have a great need for volunteers to help with general house-cleaning tasks around the shelter, help with animal care of dogs and/or cats, assist with groundskeeping and maintenance, perform public outreach at events, collecting bottles and redeemables from the vendors that donate to us, and so much more. If you would like to fundraise or donate to the SPCA, you can do so online or by contacting [email protected] to discuss ways to collaborate. Thank YOU for being the heroes to our animals. We could not do this life-saving work without the donations of time, money, and support that each of you give to us.

PET OF THE WEEK: Miriam AKA The Snaggletooth Sweetheart

We are truly baffled that Miriam, AKA “The Snaggletooth Sweetheart”, is still waiting for her forever home here at the SPCA-HC. Miriam is the kindest, most gentle senior lady with all the love in the world to give. She is our go-to dog to bring to events and public outings because she has a perfect temperament with everyone… cats, dogs, kids, adults - you name it, she loves it! She will make an incredible companion, or even a perfect pet to bring into the office with you! She’s also a decorated champ; at her most recent event she won awards for Best Costume, Judge’s Favorite, and Best Pup! Looking into her sweet, gentle eyes, you would never know that she is the survivor of a horrific state seizure situation. Since being in our care, Miriam has gained about 15 pounds and is finally at a healthy weight, which she was more than happy to help gain. Miri loves snacks, treats, meal times, and anything else to do with food. Speaking of food, Miriam is on a prescription diet of Hill’s c/d urinary care. Don’t let that scare you! It can be easily purchased at most vet offices or ordered online from retailers like Chewy. Miriam is spayed, up to date on all vaccinations and preventatives, and has had a full senior blood panel and urinalysis run. Most importantly, Miriam is truly the sweetest, gentlest, most loving gal who deserves the most beautiful landing spot for her senior years. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions regarding Miriam!

✨PET OF THE WEEK: Xube ✨

This is Xube and and he’s exuuuberant! He’s a young pup and he acts like it. Xube loves people and playing; he could do it all day - cuddles, play, repeat! He is one of the Fab 5 from a state seizure who has had to overcome a lot. His puppy years have come and gone while he’s been shuffling around shelters, and he’s really ready to find his forever. It is non-negotiable that he go to a home with no other animals. He does not like dogs. He does not like cats. He thinks small animals are snacks. People? Amazing. Xube loves people and is a super happy pup. He doesn't love being left alone, he wants to be where his people are! If you do leave him alone, he will sing the song of his people, which sounds remarkably similar to a seagull. We know his requests are a bit specific, but boy is he worth it! He’s the sweetest, silliest boy and doesn't have a mean bone in his body when it comes to people. He’s a happy, active boy who does great on walks and playing fetch. He’s been through things that could have left him scared and grumpy, but he’s a very brave boy who has stayed happy and sweet through it all. We can’t wait for this happy man to finally find his landing spot!

🌟!!! Cash for the critters alert !!! 🌟

In honor of Versant’s 100th Anniversary, they chose ten non-profits in their service area to donate to. Over 200 applications were submitted and recipients of these ten grants were selected by Versant Power employees ... WE WERE ONE OF THEM! 🎉🎉🎉 As a 100% community-funded organization, a gift like this makes a tremendous difference for our community animals. We are so thankful for this gift that will benefit the dogs and cats in our care, and congratulations to the other nine amazing organizations who received this tremendously generous gift as well! 💙

Imagine this amount of matting, dirt, and fur glued to your skin... ☹️
When animals are matted, the mats grow tight, become itchy, and become hot on the their skin. This is extremely painful and dangerous to animals' health.

This senior sweetie, Grizwold, required a full shave to get rid of painful mats from his ears all the way down to his tail. The biggest mat removed in one piece was 7 inches that was connecting his chin to his stomach. Items found in his matting included f***s, blood, and wood shavings. He now gets a chance to start over with a fresh hairdo and lots of love! Griz will be getting tests sent out for a senior bloodwork panel, as well as getting a vet check-up before he's available for adoption. We want to be extra thorough given the condition he arrived to us in. He is the sweetest baby with a great appetite and so much love to give.

Interested in helping Grizzy through this journey? Please consider donating to our Feel Better Fund. Funds from here directly support the medical costs of our most in-need animals at the shelter, like sweet Grizwold
