LGD Feature Friday - Pyrenean Mastiff Breed. The Pyrenean Mastiff is a large, powerful livestock guardian dog that originated in the Pyrenees of Spain, specifically in the Aragonese region. Historically used to protect flocks from wolves, bears, and human threats along transhumance routes, this breed is known for its combination of size, strength, and gentle temperament. Pyrenean Mastiffs are very large; males often weigh between 130 and 180+ pounds and stand 28 to 34 inches tall at the shoulder. Their coat is a thick, dense, medium-length double coat, usually white with well-defined darker patches such as badger, brindle, black, or gray. They possess a calm, stable, and confident temperament and are affectionate towards family and livestock. Naturally protective but not unnecessarily aggressive, they use their imposing presence as a deterrent. The breed exhibits a strong protective drive toward its flock and territory, characterized by loyalty and vigilance. They are attentive to potential predators but tend to deliberate rather than act rashly. They bond well with livestock and are known for their tolerance and patience. There is a national breed association based here in Texas!
