PROSPECT PYRENEES Our Story
Welcome to our page. :-) Let's start about how we came about becoming Prospect Pyrenees. Many of you would be surprised to know that the word "Prospect" in Prospect Pyrenees actually derives from the canyon we live in called Prospect Canyon here in Trinidad, Colorado. In 1993, I moved to Colorado from Vermont where I was born and raised. I had graduated from Johnson and Wales University in RI in which I received my bachelor's degree in Equine Business Management. Since I was very young we had about 22 horses and riding, breeding, training, giving lessons and breathing horses had always been my true passion until I meant this wonderful breed of a dog. Since living in Colorado I also became a nurse in LTC(now for 16 years) and married a firefighter here in Trinidad. I had always been an animal lover but there is only a few I can truly state that are my passion. I bought my first Great Pyrenees LGD/FGD (livestock guardian dog/family guardian dog) as I read up on the breed and knew having children playing outside (2 girls) and horses that it could offer protection as the mountain lion, bear, and coyote issues were becoming a problem on our 35 acres and bordering properties. What I didn't realize was what this dog was about to bring to myself and my family. This wasn't just any breed of a dog as I have had and trained many others throughout the years. This one was entirely different. Majestic, noble, gentle, and steady with so much unconditional love to give yet independent. It was so special and it was a match made in heaven. I'm totally owned by them yet we all have respect for each other. They know how to mind their charges as I do mine. It wasn't long after I trained one I just had to get another as it is not fair for one LGD to protect alone. It wasn't until my first LGD's/FGD's were about 1 3/4-2 years old before I could call them steady and true guardians. What I witnessed that day was amazing. I heard coyotes not far from the house as I went to investigate my two guardians were already ahead of the game. I could hear my older male Great Pyrenees up ahead barking fiercely minding his charges and going after these coyotes. What took me by surprise was my second Great Pyrenees LGD at my feet guarding & protecting me while looking ahead barking in the same fierce tone as her partner. Her hindquarters bumping into my legs as I continued to walk ahead towards all the action. Together my LGDs/FGDs (livestock/family guardian dogs) sent those coyotes running. To witness the teamwork in action I was like a very proud mother yet I knew even though they had been trained it really had nothing to do with me. It's just what they were naturally born and bred to do. I knew with all that this wonderful breed had brought to me and my family that I wanted others to feel just as blessed. So upon that I researched genetics for superb breeding pairs not only with AKC Champion Bloodlines but also ones that had proven temperaments and genetics. I read even more about the newest methods of training of LGD'S. Our dogs had to be outstanding from excellent lines of LGD'S & FGD'S focusing on guarding instinct capabilities to making the best family dogs around children & innocent creatures as well as providing superb qualities to be the best therapy dogs to AKC Champions in show. They had to be versatile. Our dogs all possess the best of breed standard conformation with soundness and stable temperaments to match. This was no easy task as I'm quite selective in what I like. Especially because some reputable breeders say they have everything I'm looking for but looking at their pics, genetics, temperaments, and pedigrees they don't. I spent time talking with Great Pyrenees breeding mentors and researching flaws in certain pedigrees and what AKC lines to avoid and how to breed for the best genetics including taking the class from http://www.instituteofcaninebiology.org/breed-preservation.html. and I'm a proud member and participate of Jane Killian's Puppy Culture a gold standard in puppy rearing and early socialization. https://www.puppyculture.com/the-enrichment-effect.html Along with superb guarding instincts and well socialized steady, temperaments I knew I wanted my LGD'S to be well rounded physically & mentally so each were equipped to handle the tasks of protecting & guarding here at our home. I breed for large, strong and regal dogs with true majestic bear type heads, thick dripping manes and coats. Above all it's their health, soundness, steady gentle sound resilient temperament and versatile capabilities that matter most. This is just a minute part of Prospect Pyrenees. It's a continuous learning process and breeding these dogs I take very seriously. They are my babies and now my forever passion. If you think a Great Pyrenees whether it's going to be your LGD/FGD, pet companion, therapy dog, or for show may just be a match made in heaven for you or your family, I trust that you will research the breed thoroughly before making that ultimate decision to be owned by one. -Prospect Pyrenees
