Cool case of the week!

Upward fixation of the patella is normal physiology so your horse can sleep standing up! However, when it accidentally fixates when in motion or stays permanently fixated after rest, it’s considered pathology. For those that intermittently catch while running, we have many treatment options and rehab programs in place. Just schedule a lameness exam and we can discuss further.

For the permanent fixated patellas they can seem very scary because it looks like a broken leg, but luckily it is not a painful problem at all. Most can be fixed manually by simply flexing the fetlock and pushing the patella. Those that don’t may require surgical intervention. Luckily the simple procedure can be done in a matter of minutes in the field and proper identification of the medial patellar ligament to transect. After transaction the horse can walk off immediately! It’s always satisfying to see the immediate improvement.

Is your mare going to have a foal next year? That's awesome!

Here’s what you need to do to take care of her. One key aspect of caring for your pregnant mare is keeping up with her vaccinations.

1. Pneumabort vaccine should be administered at 5, 7, and 9 months of her pregnancy to protect against abortion caused by EHV-1.

2. Core vaccines (EEE, WEE, West Nile, Rabies, and Tetanus) and the Rhino/Flu shots, which should be given as per the regular schedule. Make sure to give her a booster for the core vaccines about 4-6 weeks before she gives birth. This booster is crucial for ensuring her colostrum is packed with antibodies for the little one.

Give us a shout today to set up your mare’s vaccination appointments!
