Remember when your parents used to tell you to wait 30 minutes after eating before going for a swim? Unlike us, horses can actually benefit from eating forage before they exercise, as it may help reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.

While a variety of things can contribute to the development of stomach ulcers (medications, diet, stress, etc.), one train of thought is that these areas of irritation result as a consequence of the acid of the stomach splashing against unprotected parts of the stomach lining. When a horse eats forage, the hay can help absorb some of that acid and thus reduce the risk of ulcer formation.

It is important to note that a forage meal (one comprised of long stem hay) provides the most benefit, while eating large volumes of concentrate feeds (such as oats, corn, or other cereal grains) can actually increase the amount of acid within the stomach.
As always, please be sure to consult with your vet regarding further diagnostics and treatments if you have concerns that your horse may have gastric ulcers.

Brought to you by the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee.

Oh Joy! 🤦‍♀️ You truly are a curly horse with the curiosity gene, and fearlessness to boot!
I guess if the question is ever a keyhole jump, you'll say no problem?
Before the big freeze we put out an "all-you-can-eat round bale buffet" in each pasture. I was manning the gate. Everyone waited at a distance, but Joy really does have to inspect everything! At 2½ shes a big solid girl. Can't wait to see where the future takes her. Fred was off the tractor right after I snapped the photo.

The view of our trails is lovely from the saddle, and you can experience it yourself astride Noelle.
Joyous Noelle is a lovely 14.2 hand mare here at Deer Creek Equestrian Center that will be available for an on-site lease starting in April. Her current lessee will be moving out of state in late March, and Noelle needs another person to enjoy the trails with. She has logged many miles over the years out on The Trails at Deer Creek Farms and knows them like the back of her hand, er hoof. Noelle is a sturdy, rotund little mare, but she prefers a smaller female rider, under 130 pounds. She does not care for arena work, but prefers the trails. Noelle loves attention and needs a confident and kind rider. She is a mare after all, but on those mare days, a gentle reminder is all she needs. If you love the trails and are interested in learning more about Noelle and an an on-site lease, please send us a message or email. [email protected]

Is your barn closed up nice and cozy for winter warmth? Please go open it! Horses' body temperatures are higher than ours, and they are often overheated when winter temperatures drop. By veterinary recommendation, equine barns and indoor arenas should be no more than 10 degrees warmer than the current outdoor temperature and filled with fresh circulating air. If you can smell the slightest hint of ammonia in the barn, your horse's lungs are already being harmed. Horses need protection from wind and precipitation, not from cold. If your horses are body-clipped in mid-winter (?!), use a blanket and extra hay to keep them warm, but leave the barn air cold. (And reconsider body-clipping next year.) Do your horses a favor: Open the doors and windows of the barn, let the fresh air in, and wear a heavier jacket if you are cold. Thanks for listening!

Our new sign! I was absolutely overwhelmed on Christmas eve when our new extended family took me out to their shop to show me my Christmas present. It was an absolutely unexpected surprise to say the least! It is double-sided and almost as big as me!
Its so nice, I almost want to hang it inside to protect it!
