Today was a difficult one. Beau, a long time boarder(came as a 3yr old back in the late 90s!), crossed over that Rainbow Bridge. It was a long thought out decision by his owner, who loved him dearly. Beau was 28 and lived the majority of his life at Green Trees Farm (moved to OK while owner was at OSU, then to Austin after graduation, but back here when she couldn't find a barn that he liked!). She always said this was his "happy place". He was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, treated, but also had lameness issues that had only been escalating. It was difficult to watch him move, so the decision was made and today was the day. Our vet was here to move him over to the other side and a company from Austin came to take him for cremation. I will post the name/business card because I was moved by the gentleman's compassion and care through the event.
The touching moments included his owner telling him good bye, (her mother was there, the vet and myself. We were all crying.) and then letting his pasture mates tell him goodbye as well. Lisa Beauchamp took Tino in 3 times. His reaction was so touching. They had become great buds! Lisa took KD and Adam in, as well, not much reaction. I took Adam (my gelding, has known Beau all the years he's been here, they pretty much grew up together!) in a second time. He stopped before we got to where he lay, I spoke to him softly, then he laid his muzzle on my shoulder, up against my neck, and just breathed deeply several times, as I continued to console him. He then was ready to go up to him and sniff Beau's muzzle, as Tino had done. The horses have to say their goodbye's too. They all stood at the fence until Beau was no longer there. Tino was the first to walk away, KD and Adam stood a bit longer, then went to graze. Toby, our newest Haflinger, lives down at that barn, too, but stays in the pens. He had to say his goodbye, too, and watched until I gave him some hay and walked back up to the house. This is life with your animals. It can be a horse, a dog, even a cat. They become part of you, and it Hurts to lose one. I know this is long, but I wanted to write it down for those of you who have been through it or have yet to experience it, and in honor/memory of Beau and his long life here on the Farm, his Happy Place!! ❤🐴❤
The picture is of Beau and Adam in their much younger days!!!
