Periodontal disease is inflammation of some or all of a tooth's support. If left untreated, periodontitis may cause loose painful teeth as well as internal disease. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque (bacteria). As plaque ages and gingivitis develops then periodontitis (bone loss) occurs. Bad breath is the primary sign of periodontal disease. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease.

๐Ÿฆท Stage 1- gingivitis can be treated by teeth cleaning and polishing
๐Ÿฆท Stage 2- disease will require deep scaling
๐Ÿฆท Stage 3- disease is treated similarly in cases where the owner is able to provide, and the pet is able to accept daily plaque control at home
๐Ÿฆท Stage 4- dental scaling and/or surgery is necessary to treat the affected teeth through specific procedures or extraction

Gingivitis is treatable and curable with daily tooth brushing. Periodontal disease is not curable once bone loss occurs but may be controllable once treated and followed up with strict home care.

Unless your pets teeth are brushed daily, plaque will build up on the gum line. This eventually leads to gum irritation and infection, which progresses into loosening and destroying the tooth's attachment. In addition to loose teeth, infection can spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart.

Brushing your pets teeth is pretty simple! All you need is a soft bristled toothbrush or a finger brush, and pet safe toothpaste. Do NOT use human toothpaste for your pets. Human toothpastes have detergents that should not be swallowed.

If your pet is experiencing frequent pain or refusing to eat, has changed chewing habits, or has moderate to severe mouth odor, then an oral problem is probably the cause.

Try to perform dental home care at least once daily by using a toothbrush or finger toothbrush with pet safe toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste for a pet as these contain sudsing agents! Studies have shown that brushing three times a week was adequate to maintain healthy teeth and gums but daily brushing was needed to control existing gingivitis. Feeding your pet a hard kibble will help keep your pets teeth clean as well as Veterinarian approved dental chews.

With owners traveling, we have had a lot of questions about what the Bordetella vaccine is and why we recommend it ๐Ÿ’‰ Most commonly we hear owners call the Bordetella vaccine a "๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ". And most owners decline the vaccine because they "๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ" their dog. Although ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ข and ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ sound very similar, Bordetella is not just a requirement for boarding. We recommend vaccinating your pet with Bordetella yearly if your dog is around any other dogs in their lifetime. This could be interactions through the fence, on a walk, dog parks, grooming, boarding, etc. ๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐  ๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ž๐ญ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐š? The Bordetella vaccination prevents an infectious bronchitis commonly known as Kennel Cough. Kennel Cough, if left untreated, can progress into life-threatening pneumonia. ๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐œ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ? Bordetella is spread from canine to canine. An infected canine sheds infectious bacteria and/or viruses in raspatory secretions.

With frigid temps approaching, we want to make sure that you and your pets are staying safe!โ›„๏ธ Pets that are not properly acclimatized to a cold environment will probably be uncomfortable and can also suffer hypothermia from exposure to harsh conditions. Try to limit your pets time outside! Indicaters that your pet may be cold and uncomfortable: โ„๏ธ Shiver or tremble โ„๏ธ Hold their feet up in the air โ„๏ธ Whine โ„๏ธ Hunch up โ„๏ธ Tuck their tails โ„๏ธ Show behavioral changes โ„๏ธ Refuse to walk Some signs of hypothermia in dogs include: โ„๏ธ Weakness โ„๏ธ Lethargy โ„๏ธ Decrease in mental function โ„๏ธ Loss of consciousness Looking for ways to keep your pet warm? Again, try to limit their time outside. You can dress them in a blanket or sweater as well as booties before they go outside.
