Week 2 of class for these 2 very reactive dogs. Working on stay for the first time and doing awesome!
These dogs are socializing. 2 of them aren't even residents here, so can be considered friends of my dogs. But if you listen to a lot of dog trainers today (esp on social media), they will lead you to believe that your dog shouldn't interact with other dogs, and certainly not engage in friendly play. Why? Because the notion is that your dog should learn to focus on you, to play with only you. They claim it makes for better training - but does it?
Dogs are pack animals. They are designed to live in groups, and enjoy the company of one another. I feel they also feel safer in a group setting. Now a dog will accept us as part of their pack, but they know we are not dogs. There is something to be said about the comrodary of a dog pack.
Just like any other skill, if a dog isn't getting the chance to interact with it's own kind, they can start to loose their social skills with other dogs. That is a big deal! This most certainly leads to behavior problems like reactivity, insecurity and often full blown aggression. Why any so called professional would suggest doing something that could lead to these sorts of issues is beyond me.
Yes, your dog needs to be socializing with its own kind. Now, don't hear what I'm not saying. I do NOT reccomend dog parks. They are breeding grounds for disease and parasites, and your dog could end up sick. Also, other dogs are being brought there that might not be safe around other dogs. I have personally seen dangerous group fights break out at dog parks, and know of a few dogs that have been killed at dog parks. But there are other ways to keep your dog's canine social skills up, such as meeting up with friends that have dogs that are good with other dogs, taking group training classes, etc.
Now if you find yourself thinking "but my dog is reactive" or "doesn't like other dogs", then you already have a social skill problem that has turned into a behavior issue. Any dog that doesn't like or get along with its own kind has some
Does your dog know how to take medication? Magnum sure does!
Working with a super reactive, aggressive Belgian Tervuren. At the beginning of this session the owner and I couldn't carry on a conversation because of the loud barking and lunging. A week in and he is continuing to improve.
