Summer - Tips 4* Recognize Overheating โ๐ฉ๐๐โ๏ธ๐ฆ
As we go through the Dog Days of Summer, it is a good time to refresh ourselves on how to help our dogs deal with the heat of summer.
How to Recognize and Alleviate Overheating?
When it is hot out, keep an eye on your dog and pay close attention to their behavior. This can give you important information to see if the heat is too much and they are experiencing the beginning signs of heat stress.
Are they seeking shade and stopping?
Do they seem lethargic and are limiting their movement?
Are they choosing to sit or lie down?
Moderate heat stress signs involve heavy panting, nausea, vomiting, reddening skin, and excessive saliva.
If they are open mouth panting uncontrollably with their tongue distended and hanging out to the side, and they struggle to swallow between panting, they are in severe heat stress or heat exhaustion.
If you notice any of these, or a combination of these symptoms, treat them immediately before they go into heat stroke.

Summer - Tips * โ๐ฉ๐๐โ๏ธ๐ฆ
As we go through the Dog Days of Summer, it is a good time to refresh ourselves on how to help our dogs deal with the heat of summer.
Helping Your Dog Deal With the Heat
One thing you can do that will help your dog, not just when itโs warm, but for their overall health, is to keep your dog lean. Excess fat insulates internal heat and makes it harder for a dog to cool their body temperature. If you have a double-coated dog (think Husky types), their fur actually can insulate them from external temperatures and intense sun, so shaving them is not the best option. Dogs with hair (think Doodles) will do well with a close-cut groom.
A few other suggestions that we offer are the following:
- Plan to carry water and/or have access to water and small dish for drinking for your dog.
- Steer clear of exposed sunny areas, bare rock and hot pavement when the temperature is over 75ยฐF. As a point of reference, when the air temperature is 86ยฐF, sun-exposed asphalt temperature can register up to 135ยฐF!
- Use the back of your hand or bare foot to feel the temperature of the surface you are taking your dog on- if itโs too hot to hold your hand there for 10 seconds, it is too hot for your dog. Also note that because small and short-legged dogs are closer to hot ground, their bodies absorb that radiant heat even more readily.
Find shady places and water (lakes, creeks, etc.) to take your dog.
- Take frequent breaks.
- If you plan continuous strenuous exercise (running, biking, fetch, etc. with your dog for more than 15-20 minutes), do so only when the temperature is well below 80 F, and even cooler temperatures, with thick coated dogs.
- Give your dog appropriate time to cool down (walk) after exercise before letting them get back in the car.
- Use a sun-shade to keep your car cooler when parked, and/or be sure to ventilate your car to cool it down before letting your dog in.
- Never leave your dog unattended in a closed car (unless it has automatic climate control for dogs).
Happy Monday ๐ฆ๐๐โ๐ฉ

Did you know - That humidity is changing the way your dogs heat regulation ?
Of course, the weather has a huge impact on how well a dog can regulate their temperature. Cool, cloudy, and even rainy conditions make a big difference for dogs. Though we might be miserable when it is raining and 40, so long as a dog has plenty of calories, they could play and run forever in these conditions. Something we donโt think about often, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains is humidity. However, when it goes above 40%, this can drastically affect how well a dog can shed heat. We typically see clouds and thunderhead development if the humidity rises during the day. Most weather apps on your phone will report the current (or forecasted) humidity so itโs easy to keep track of and further limit your activity with your dog if it is up above 40% when it is above 70ยฐF.

Summer - Tips *1 โ๐ฉ๐๐โ๏ธ๐ฆ
As we go through the Dog Days of Summer, it is a good time to refresh ourselves on how to help our dogs deal with the heat of summer.
Did you know - How dogs shed heat?
Dogs use the same evaporative cooling process as us to lower their body temperature. However, while we sweat through our pores all over our body, they can only shed excess heat naturally by panting (moving air over their wet tongues) and sweating through their paws.
Something interesting to keep in mind whenever you take your dog out for some summer fun (hiking, biking, running, playing) is that research has shown that a dogโs internal temperature continues to rise (above their already increased, exercise induced temperature) for 6-10 minutes after exercise and before their body naturally starts to be able to cool down with a slowing of the metabolic processes.
Stay safe and cool with your dog during the summer.

Train & Board for Puppies
Train and board with Buddy offers a great opportunity to socialize your puppy and get him trained while you are away. With Guido I have been working this time mainly on staying focused in the presence of other people and dogs. We spend lots of time on the trail and downtown. Besides recall training Guido enjoyed the time with his friends Mochi and Tortin.

Summer - Recall Training Recall training will be one theme in our upcoming spring newsletter. We cannot talk enough about recall since it is the most important cue to keep your dog safe. Here is a short video in which you see me working with Summer on recall. Summer has been reluctant to come back when called when she started her train and board with me. Now she associates positive outcomes when she comes back when called. Here I am working with Guido and his owner on the cue HEEL and also including some puppy socialization of the environment. Capturing Down / Dog Training Tips After only 12hours in train and board Summer was already able to perform a DOWN cue. She has been eager to learn and work with me, soaking up all the attention she could get. Usually down is not easy for small dogs to learn, but she got it right away. I was using capturing and luring parallel and then only captured. Learn how to do that here > https://www.buddydogcare.com/forms #trainandboard #dogtraining
Training Progress! ๐ถ Here we see Abby and her handler working with me on HEEL. We scheduled one session together at the Legacy Trail, where it is very difficult for Abby to stay focused on her human friends. However, the cue HEEL can help to prevent her from running up to other dogs. ๐ถ After our first session I received the following feedback from Abby's owner. โAbby did great walking on the street of her Truckee home. She stayed right at my side. At the first cross street where her dog friends live, I let her go look for them. She found one and then the next door neighbor came out with her 2 dogs for a fast walk. What a great reward for Abby. Then we walked nicely back home, what a great beginning.โ Way to go Abby! ๐พ Lilith

๐ถSelf entertainment, the ability to create your own fun no matter what is going on, is a rare and wonderful dog trait. George, a long-time regular in the Buddy family is a master at this, seen here doing so with a humble pine cone. It makes us laugh and delight every time. ๐พ Mateo
An insight into 1:1 Training ๐ Kody's handlers contacted me regarding behaviors like shyness and nipping at strangers. In the assessment it became clear that Kody is hand shy, which is more prominent in certain breeds and can be a sign of improper early socialization. My first step is to work with the handler on improvements in communication and overcoming the hand shyness through teaching light obedience in combination with a cue like TOUCH โค๐พโค ๐พ Lilith
Buddy's Socialization Group ๐ ๐พ Buddy slowly learns to confidently play and interact with other dogs. ๐พ For the first time, he is focused on inviting play, expressing joy to engage with others, and not scanning the environment for danger. ๐พ Buddy has been abused by humans and rarely had the chance to interact with other dogs. His handler, Jennifer Waddell, has invested much effort in rehabilitation for Buddy. It is a slow process to heal but worth waiting!

Did you know we have a Puppy Board and Train program that incorporates foundational puppy obedience and socialization training throughout the entire stay? ๐ Here is a video of Blue working on some recall training within this program. ๐ Recall training can be one of the hardest cues to learn and it's important to set dogs up for success. First, we begin by waiting for a moment of stillness before calling to the puppy. Over time, the difficulty is increased as the dog demonstrates mastery. โก If you want to learn more about this program, please reach out to [email protected] for information!

Dogs in Buddy Dog Pack Outings have different ways of covering ground. ๐พ Some reliably stay on trail and nearby, and some prefer orbiting in the woods, exploring scents and small critters. ๐พ Here we see Dax, Red, and Molly keeping close by, as they usually do. And we see Piper, Luna, and Matty roaming in orbit of the pack center, as they usually do. Together our constellation is reliably successful, and fun, for all. ๐พ Mateo
๐ถ A minute within a Buddy Dog Pack Outing! Starring Rio, Gus, Nixon, Nova, Pepper, and Callie. ๐พ A favorite activity within this group of dog friends is chasing forest critters, as we suddenly see from Callie, Gus, Rio, and Pepper. ๐พ Usually one dog believes something is out there and takes off, leading the others to follow. They pretty much never catch anything other than a fun time tearing through the woods. ๐พ Wise Nixon knows better and contently travels at his own mellow pace, while little Nova travels the woods by zooming to and fro. ๐พ Everyone within the pack is 100% reliable to come back after chasing around, continually checking in, and allowing a sense of confidence and adventure to shine within the Buddy Dog Pack. ๐พ Mateo
A shocking statistic: currently over 50% of pet dogs are overweight or obese. Even more shocking is that most of us may not realize if our dog is overweight, or underweight, and what to do about it if they are. Letโs take a peek at why this statistic occurs, why a healthy weight is important, what to look for in an ideal weight, and how to help your dog achieve a healthy weight. Check out our new blog post from Team Alaska and learn the do's + don'ts of maintaining your dog's healthy weight. https://www.buddydogcare.com/post/your-dogs-healthy-weight
Clicker training is one of the best training techniques that we utilize at Buddy for both its effectiveness and the integral reasons of why that is. Here Michael of Team Alaska is working with Kodiak on the cue LOOK and you see them marking the behavior with a click. The click tells the dog that he did the right behavior and that he earned a treat. The concept of clicker training is very simple and straightforward. Once you get it, you can apply it to everything and watch your dogโs behavior transforms. The key is consistency and with it, everything is possible!
This is Wes, an almost 5-month-old Golden Retriever whoโs enjoying puppy socialization outings with Mochi, Daisy, and Floyd. Wes enjoyed playing with Mochi and was testing the boundaries of how far he can go. It was an important lesson for him to encounter that not all dogs like to play, which our 12-year-old Daisy made very clear. Floyd represented himself clearly as the pack leader creating a role model for Wes to look up to. Deep learning from the wisdom of the dog pack ๐
Thunder in Socialization Training Group: Thunder is a 1-year-old female Border Collie/McNab mix and clear โcovid dogโ (a dog whoโs suffered from the insinuating circumstances stemming from the pandemic). Her handler reached out wishing for socialization with other dogs since that has not occurred during socially distancing. After my assessment, quickly it was clear that Thunder mostly lacks confidence with humans and bigger dogs. It took me about four outings until she was confident enough that I could approach her, leash, and pet her. On the trail, she would bark anxiously towards people and sometimes towards stranger dogs. I introduced Thunder and her handler to a greeting protocol that I have developed for anxious dogs that follows a sequence of easy-to-train cues. We started practicing in 1:1 sessions, in our Socialization Training Group, and Daycare & Train at my house where I introduced Mateo, my husband and Buddy team member. You can see in the video how much Thunder has gained confidence and likes to practice the greeting protocol. Sheโs now less reactive on the trail and can be introduced to strangers much easier! https://www.buddydogcare.com/service-page/socialization-training-group?referral=service_list_widget Shannon Rahlves
