Working on Drop It -
Puppy Training -
Here I working on Drop It with my client down by the Truckee River. Drop it is a really important cue to learn for puppies especially since they grab and find stuff on the floor to eat or chew all the time.
Summer - Recall Training
Recall training will be one theme in our upcoming spring newsletter.
We cannot talk enough about recall since it is the most important cue to keep your dog safe.
Here is a short video in which you see me working with Summer on recall.
Summer has been reluctant to come back when called when she started her train and board with me.
Now she associates positive outcomes when she comes back when called.

Puppy Socialization
Here I am working with Guido and his owner on the cue HEEL and also including some puppy socialization of the environment.
Key to success is to give timely appropriate feedback with either the positive marker or a verbal reminder like eheh.

Capturing Down / Dog Training Tips
After only 12hours in train and board Summer was already able to perform a DOWN cue. She has been eager to learn and work with me, soaking up all the attention she could get. Usually down is not easy for small dogs to learn, but she got it right away. I was using capturing and luring parallel and then only captured. Learn how to do that here > https://www.buddydogcare.com/forms

Training Progress!
๐ถ Here we see Abby and her handler working with me on HEEL. We scheduled one session together at the Legacy Trail, where it is very difficult for Abby to stay focused on her human friends. However, the cue HEEL can help to prevent her from running up to other dogs.
๐ถ After our first session I received the following feedback from Abby's owner.
โAbby did great walking on the street of her Truckee home. She stayed right at my side. At the first cross street where her dog friends live, I let her go look for them. She found one and then the next door neighbor came out with her 2 dogs for a fast walk. What a great reward for Abby. Then we walked nicely back home, what a great beginning.โ
Way to go Abby!

๐ถSelf entertainment, the ability to create your own fun no matter what is going on, is a rare and wonderful dog trait. George, a long-time regular in the Buddy family is a master at this, seen here doing so with a humble pine cone. It makes us laugh and delight every time.

An insight into 1:1 Training ๐
Kody's handlers contacted me regarding behaviors like shyness and nipping at strangers.
In the assessment it became clear that Kody is hand shy, which is more prominent in certain breeds and can be a sign of improper early socialization.
My first step is to work with the handler on improvements in communication and overcoming the hand shyness through teaching light obedience in combination with a cue like TOUCH โค๐พโค

Buddy's Socialization Group ๐
๐พ Buddy slowly learns to confidently play and interact with other dogs.
๐พ For the first time, he is focused on inviting play, expressing joy to engage with others, and not scanning the environment for danger.
๐พ Buddy has been abused by humans and rarely had the chance to interact with other dogs. His handler, Jennifer Waddell, has invested much effort in rehabilitation for Buddy. It is a slow process to heal but worth waiting!
A delightful thing about taking Buddy Dog Packs out in the snowy season is seeing dogs like Charlie roll around in the deep snow and pop out as a snowdog ๐

Did you know we have a Puppy Board and Train program that incorporates foundational puppy obedience and socialization training throughout the entire stay?
๐ Here is a video of Blue working on some recall training within this program.
๐ Recall training can be one of the hardest cues to learn and it's important to set dogs up for success. First, we begin by waiting for a moment of stillness before calling to the puppy. Over time, the difficulty is increased as the dog demonstrates mastery.
โก If you want to learn more about this program, please reach out to [email protected] for information!

Dogs in Buddy Dog Pack Outings have different ways of covering ground.
๐พ Some reliably stay on trail and nearby, and some prefer orbiting in the woods, exploring scents and small critters.
๐พ Here we see Dax, Red, and Molly keeping close by, as they usually do. And we see Piper, Luna, and Matty roaming in orbit of the pack center, as they usually do. Together our constellation is reliably successful, and fun, for all.

๐ถ A minute within a Buddy Dog Pack Outing! Starring Rio, Gus, Nixon, Nova, Pepper, and Callie.
๐พ A favorite activity within this group of dog friends is chasing forest critters, as we suddenly see from Callie, Gus, Rio, and Pepper.
๐พ Usually one dog believes something is out there and takes off, leading the others to follow. They pretty much never catch anything other than a fun time tearing through the woods.
๐พ Wise Nixon knows better and contently travels at his own mellow pace, while little Nova travels the woods by zooming to and fro.
๐พ Everyone within the pack is 100% reliable to come back after chasing around, continually checking in, and allowing a sense of confidence and adventure to shine within the Buddy Dog Pack.

A shocking statistic: currently over 50% of pet dogs are overweight or obese. Even more shocking is that most of us may not realize if our dog is overweight, or underweight, and what to do about it if they are. Letโs take a peek at why this statistic occurs, why a healthy weight is important, what to look for in an ideal weight, and how to help your dog achieve a healthy weight.
Check out our new blog post from Team Alaska and learn the do's + don'ts of maintaining your dog's healthy weight.

Clicker Training for Positive Reinforcement
Clicker training is one of the best training techniques that we utilize at Buddy for both its effectiveness and the integral reasons of why that is.
Here Michael of Team Alaska is working with Kodiak on the cue LOOK and you see them marking the behavior with a click. The click tells the dog that he did the right behavior and that he earned a treat.
The concept of clicker training is very simple and straightforward. Once you get it, you can apply it to everything and watch your dogโs behavior transforms. The key is consistency and with it, everything is possible!
Puppy Socialization Outing with Wes
This is Wes, an almost 5-month-old Golden Retriever whoโs enjoying puppy socialization outings with Mochi, Daisy, and Floyd.
Wes enjoyed playing with Mochi and was testing the boundaries of how far he can go.
It was an important lesson for him to encounter that not all dogs like to play, which our 12-year-old Daisy made very clear. Floyd represented himself clearly as the pack leader creating a role model for Wes to look up to.

Socialization Training for "Covid Dogs"
Thunder in Socialization Training Group: Thunder is a 1-year-old female Border Collie/McNab mix and clear โcovid dogโ (a dog whoโs suffered from the insinuating circumstances stemming from the pandemic). Her handler reached out wishing for socialization with other dogs since that has not occurred during socially distancing.
After my assessment, quickly it was clear that Thunder mostly lacks confidence with humans and bigger dogs. It took me about four outings until she was confident enough that I could approach her, leash, and pet her. On the trail, she would bark anxiously towards people and sometimes towards stranger dogs.
I introduced Thunder and her handler to a greeting protocol that I have developed for anxious dogs that follows a sequence of easy-to-train cues.
We started practicing in 1:1 sessions, in our Socialization Training Group, and Daycare & Train at my house where I introduced Mateo, my husband and Buddy team member.
You can see in the video how much Thunder has gained confidence and likes to practice the greeting protocol. Sheโs now less reactive on the trail and can be introduced to strangers much easier!
