There will be times that it feels like the world is against you.

It will seem as if God is seriously testing you. It may be a health issue or a financial issue. It may be as simple as not being able to make a clean run, or make it to an event without tire issues.

Sometimes these hurdles are to remind you of how good life is most the time. It's to help you appreciate the wins, the process, and the relationships. It's to help you have perspective when you may not remember what is important in this world.

Even when things are difficult remember to find something, even small to appreciate and be thankful for.

Emergency situations can happen anywhere, at any time. But the fear of what *could* happen doesn’t need to be a worry when you’re properly prepared.

Make sure all of your animals are identifiable in the case of an emergency.

Next show you haul your child to, pay attention to how you speak of the judge.

Guess what? Judges are real people with feelings - they've crawled out of bed to stand in the hot sun or the wind and rain. They're not only going to pick their favourites, they're giving your child a helping hand with her horsemanship journey. They are teaching her how to win and, just as importantly in this life, how to lose.

I've so often overheard parents and children say, "Oh, I hate that judge!" Really?! Instead, remember there are many roads to Rome and the program your child is enrolled in, mightn't be the only road.

Next show you haul your child to, encourage her to say good morning and to thank the judge after the class, should opportunity allow. This isn't butt kissing, folks. It's called good manners... and learning our manners is a part of good horsemanship, too.

By the way, teach your young riders to say thank you to the gate people and the folks in the hitching ring. Every. single. time. they walk past.
