***COST OF EGGS****

Egg prices at Thomas Family Farm, Tucker are as follows:

$6 a dozen

$9 1.5 dozen

$12 2 dozen

$18 3 dozen

Two main reasons:

1. Continual Increase in cost of feed (corn and wheat and oats, etc) since late 2020 and

2. Bird flu restrictions (reactive killing mandated by FDA) making individual producers cull entire inventory of 100,000+ birds in their lines.

We have dealt with the cost of feed increase of 21% ourselves over the last 12 months. In 2023we paid $13-$14 for a 50 # bag of non-gmo organic feed. We go through a bag every day & a half.

We buy 20 bags at a time.

This past month prices were $17.85 or $17 with bulk discount which we try to get.

That's $340 before tax every two weeks.

We would have to sell 68 dozen eggs (816 eggs) at $5 a dozen to make up the price of feed alone. Not water, Not clean bedding, Not mealworms (extra protein during winter when they can't find as much by scratching for bugs.)

That is 34 dozen a week. That is about 57 eggs a day. A DAY. To equal just the cost of feed alone. Reality is that will just not happen!

So new cost is $6~12ct $9~18ct $12~24ct $18~36ct

Biologically hens can only lay ONE egg a day. They skip days too, as is normal. We do not have typical mass egg laying breeds that producers use that lay 340-360 eggs a year and then get butchered after years. No. We have a huge variety of unique chickens that we love for their temperament, their egg colors, their stunning beauty, their silliness, and heat tolerance. Some don't lay but one egg a week or so- but they are the sweetest and silliest floofiest birds and make us smile watching them. It is a joy!

We also allow nature to do its thing and let the birds follow their own rhythm as motivated by the length of the day, amount of sunlight hours, and their own hormones as influence.

Each bird molts at their own pace. We do not cull or dispatch (unalive) a bird because they have gotten up in age. They are sweet and have personalities and are pretty much out pets. That's how it all began 12 years ago this February! Over night we took in a rescue pig, three guinea hens and 10 backyard (and indoor) chickens! They were pets. Each had a name and definite personality. well from there it grew!

Anyway, mass producers -yes even Vital farms and Egglands best, etc - do not keep non-laying or slow laying birds in production. It is not cost effective.

It is expensive. They make room for the new young hens and keep on going in that cycle. A bird's use last approx two years on average for them.

Ours live upwards of a decade! We have one who is 12 this year. Of course we naturally lose some throughout the years, as chicks who fail to thrive or get eaten by the adult hens, and to adult birds being eaten by predators, and even to unknown reasons. We send these to be tested- a "necropsy"- done by North GA Poultry lab to make sure its nothing we could have prevent or act on. Nope. Never so far - knock on wood- has there been a diagnosis of something that was preventable.

We feed our chicken flocks and our turkeys the best to supplement the free ranging they get. We provide healthy veggie and meat scraps, as well as fresh greens from our Thomas Family Farm that they enjoy.

The childcare school that we have on property has children who love to dig up worms and collect weeds and leaves and save their left over oatmeal and such to go feed the birds. So our chickens are kinda spoiled :)๐Ÿ˜

Outdoor living hens typically lay eggs starting late winter through to July and slow down tremendously by August into September and take breaks to molt and to give their systems a break. They get very goofy looking as they loose their feathers in tufts and we have evidence of what looks to be mass pillow fights!! Also, hens who go broody (hormonally triggered to want to hatch eggs) is a common occurrence. So these hens lay on eggs and don't move and they DON'T lay eggs either during this time. lasts three weeks to two months sometimes! This happens in spring to early summer.

These factors above add to the variation of the amount of eggs we may be collecting daily. It fluctuates. We are an organic farm and try to keep to the best natural lifestyle for our animals as we can.

Hopefully this has been enlightening and helps you see into the life of backyard chicken keeping through our eyes.

Thank you for supporting a small farm, and buying local. We hope to continue being here and ding what we do for years to come!

Be sure to follow our Thomas Family Farm page! Thank you!!
