Tuesdays, twice a month, are our Valley Fever days in addition to our usual neurology and radiology appointment schedule.
We love helping our doctors who specialize in Valley Fever treatment, and we especially love these hilarious shirts that a student at The Valley Fever Center of Excellence had made. The official name for Valley Fever is coccidioidomycosis. Try saying that 10 times fast.

A very rare opportunity occurred at TVS this week!
We had the pleasure of meeting sweet Primrose, a striped skunk from the Sonora Desert Museum. She came to us seeking advanced imaging (MRI) for her seizure activity. While she is improving with medication, her episodes still occur a couple times a week.
Primrose was accompanied by Dr. Barbara Paige (Veterinarian), Kara Gniewek (CVT), and Brenda King (Curator) from the Sonora Desert Museum.
She recovered well from her procedures and made her way back to her habitat at the museum.
We're honored to have had the opportunity to help improve her care.

Last... but not least... here are our wonderful overnight technicians Luisa and Dallas! They take care of your pet if they should have to stay the night with us after surgery or if not stable enough to go home quite yet. They provide one on one care and treat them like their very own. Happy Vet Tech Week! And thank you to each and every one of our support staff. We couldn't do it without you!

To end our tech week, we must also shout out our part time support staff! Meet Danny and Savanna ... our main Friday team. Our assistant Savanna is with us during the week as well in between her classes at the UofA and we get technician Danny on his day off from working emergency. They both help round out our team and we are so happy to have them on board.

Meet our full time technicians: Allison, Casey and Marissa. Our team is fully trained in anesthesia and performing diagnostic imaging MRI and CT. They each assist our doctors in rooms, admitting patients and will be the voice you hear for follow up calls. They send out blood work, place IV catheters and fill your pets medications. They are here to advocate for your pet, get them home to you safely, and if the difficult decision must be made to say goodbye to your pet, they will be there for you and your pet the whole way through. Each of these extraordinary nurses chose this field because of their compassion for animals... and we are proud to have them on the TVS team.

We are excited to announce that doctors Lisa Shubitz and Christine Butkiewicz will be joining us at TVS in addition to their full time research work at the University of Arizona. They both work at the Valley Fever Center for Excellence and study the epidemiology of disease in canines, the ecological distribution of the fungus in Southern Arizona and interactions between the host (both animal and human) of the fungus that causes Valley Fever. Both doctors are part of the team that created the Valley Fever vaccine for canines. Please contact your family veterinarian for referral if needed.

Meet the handsome Raider! Raider presented to TVS for sudden onset inability to walk. His neurologic examination supported significant middle back (T3-L3 myelopathy) spinal cord dysfunction. An MRI of his spine showed a ruptured disc between his 12th and 13th thoracic vertebrae along with focal bruising of his spinal cord. Surgery was performed which included an extended durotomy at the site of spinal cord bruising, which is a newer technique to allow for swelling. At time of discharge, Raider's chances for functional recovery were guarded. Raider's recovery was long, but he beat the odds and he's doing well overall!
He especially loves his attention from his TVS girls!

Meet Kratos!
Kratos came into TVS with severe neck pain. After his evaluation by Dr. Alcott, an MRI of his neck was performed which revealed a disc herniation at C4-C5. It was determined that Kratos needed surgery and a ventral slot was performed. Within a couple of hours after the surgery, he was already feeling more himself and wanting to walk around with minimal pain. Check out his MRI and post-op photos!

This is Bruno, he’s had chronic back pain from a ruptured disc and was taken to surgery to decompress his spinal cord and spinal nerve. After surgery yesterday, Bruno stayed in hospital with us overnight. This morning, Bruno is doing wonderful and on his way back home with his loving family to continue his road to recovery. He was the sweetest patient and a pleasure to have in hospital.
