Lost and Stray Response Squad

Lost and Stray Response Squad Our mission is to assist the community with lost, found, stray & abandoned animals!

11/07/2022

Pathways for Paws received an urgent call from a concerned community member about a small pup hanging out at the Pollo Feliz at Oracle & Roger and that he had left food and water. We passed the information along to a Lost and Stray Response Squad volunteer. She called and asked if he would call back to verify if the little one was still there in the morning - he did & the pup was.

The volunteer went to go check out the area and found the pup exactly where he said she would be - laying at the adjacent empty lot. An employee informed the volunteer that the little pup had been there for almost three weeks. All her fellow employees kept the pup fed but the pup would run and not let anyone get close. The employee even made the pup a bed out of a box and a blanket.

The trap was set up with Popeye's chicken and in 28 seconds the little pup was safe. This little one was kept alive by her street smarts, the kindness of people and the employees at Pollo Feliz. It does take a village.

This pup is safe at Pathways and all appropriate steps have been taken to report found!

This lovely man was found on 10/7 in the area of Silverbell and Sunset. He has been seen wandering the area for at least two weeks! A kind gentleman posted asking for assistance and volunteers with the Lost and Stray Response Squad reached out to help. This sweet boy was transported to pacc and was reunited with his family two days later! We all wish him the very best and are so glad he is now safe at home! A huge thank you to Alberto for looking out for him, giving him a safe zone, and for reaching out to get him help! Also a huge thank you to Lost and Stray Response Squad volunteers, and to Pacc for taking him in and helping him to reunite! ❤️🐾❤️

Please let us know if you recognize these two. This two sweet babies were found by a volunteer of the Lost and Stray Response Squad on 10/13 running in traffic in front of Lineweaver Elementary school near Columbus and Timrod. The large female pup looks to have had pups at some point. Neighbors reported seeing the dogs outside the school for two days. They are now safe at PACC. They are both extremely sweet once trust is built and are very bonded to each other! Please consider adopting this incredible pair if no owners come forward ❤️

Does your gate/fence have damage you haven’t noticed? Maybe your gate/fence is not as high as you thought & your dogs could jump over it? Are people truly opening gates, letting dogs out and/or stealing dogs?

Not a day goes by that we don’t receive calls of families looking for their dog(s) that have gone missing from their homes yard.

Below are some things you can do to prevent losing your family member:

1. Make sure your pets are microchipped & registered with up to date contact information
2. Go outside with your pets, do not leave them unattended
3. Walk the perimeter of your yard: check for broken/loose boards, holes that could’ve been dug, loose chain link, gaps your pet could squeeze through
4. Lock the points of access to your yard
5. BRING YOUR PETS INSIDE: they will always be safer indoors, out of the elements & the unknown

These are just a few things to consider, it is your responsibility as a pet owner to do all you can to keep them safe 🐾

This gentle giant was first sighted a month ago near Ajo and Kinney. He traveled throughout the area and was seen again and a kind woman posted that he was hanging out in their yard for several days. Pacc came out and without trying to catch recommended that homeowner stop feeding and pup will “wander home”💔Volunteers from the Lost and Stray Response Squad responded to the home the following day on 9/29 and devised a plan with the neighbors and kind people looking out for him. Pup was very skittish and massive in size so building trust with one of the volunteers began. After three days of going to location to visit and build trust on 10/1 this gentle giant finally allowed for leash to be clipped on harness and immediately was grateful and jumped in the car!! He was microchipped and it was registered with current contact info which allowed for a reunion with mom within the hour!! He had traveled at least 15miles!! This incredible man is now home with his loving and thankful family! A huge thank you to Celeste and to all the kind neighbors who looked out for him and posted asking for help, and to Lost and Stray Response Squad volunteers! Incredible community effort to get this gentle giant to safety. Please always help animals in need and don’t assume they will “wander back home”. Without caring people his safety and reunion wouldn’t have been possible ❤️🐾❤️

9/13 - found in the area of Bilby and 6th.

She has been surviving by the meat market since July 2! A gentleman has been bringing her food and water trying to build trust but she was too skittish to catch. He posted today asking for help after seeing her in traffic and fearing for her safety even more as she looked like she could be pregnant. Volunteers with the Lost and Stray Response Squad reached out to offer assistance and were able to bring this sweet one to safety. A huge thank you to Art for looking out for her all this time and to our volunteers!

If you have been missing her or know who she belongs to, please contact PACC.

9/10/22 - found in the area of 22nd & Alvernon

She found a safe place outside of a kind man’s home & had been there for 5 days! He watched out for her, left food/water & posted but no owners came forward. Our volunteers were able to assist & bring this sweet one to safety.

A huge thank you to all involved! She is with Pathways for Paws being fostered for her stray hold & will be available for adoption if no one comes forward for her. All appropriate steps have taken to find her owners.

9/4 - found male chihuahua near 15th St & Plumer.

A post was made by Good Samaritan. One of our volunteers was in contact & it was determined the pup had been seen for a few weeks. Our volunteer went to the area for a few days to watch for the pup & put kibble out. He was extremely skittish & would run & hide.

The trap was set up & it took almost 5 hours for this guy to work up the nerve to go in a little further, thankfully he liked the smell of taco meat & turkey. Once he was in the trap, he seemed relieved that his life was no longer in danger. He has some scars, bits of both his ears missing & dried blood. Battle wounds that were attended to once he was relaxed.

He is at Pathways for Paws. He is microchipped & we learned he was adopted from PACC around a year ago. We called, texted & emailed the adopter on file but no one has come forward to claim him.

He is around 10 years old, very sweet but scared.

Thank you to everyone involved in getting this pup to safety!

9/5 - young male chihuahua found in the area of Fairland Stra & Amalia Ave.

A woman spotted him running in & out of traffic on 9/4. The following day, he was still there & she reached out to the Lost and Stray Response Squad for assistance. Our volunteers responded & set up the trap. After 7 hours, he finally walked in!

A huge thank you to the woman & her family for staying the entire time & to our volunteers for bringing this pup to safety! He was full of ticks and appears to have been alone for quite awhile.

He is currently at Pathways for Paws. All appropriate steps have been taken to find his family.

Please spread the word if you know this pups family! This pup has been seen in the area of Palo verde and Benson Highway since at least August 21st. An amazing woman reached out for assistance because pup was seen very close to road and feared he would be hit. She attempted to help him but pup was skittish. Volunteers with Lost and Stray Response Squad arrived to the location and discovered pup had been injured by a car and could no longer put weight on his back leg. He trusted the trap and allowed the team to help!

He is now in the clinic at PACC. A huge thank you to the woman who reached out & to our volunteers. A huge community effort as always!

On Tuesday, 8/30, a post was made about a pup stranded at the General Hitchcock campground on Mt. Lemmon. Our volunteers responded the next morning, 8/31, & spoke with campers who saw the pup that morning but reported he was very skittish. Volunteers scoured the area with no luck. On Thursday, 9/1, our volunteers went home to get camping gear & headed back up. Around 8:30pm, he finally walked into the trap! He quickly knew he was safe & turned from a very skittish pup to a pup full of gratitude! He spent the night with our volunteers in their tent.

On Friday, 9/2, a volunteer with Sabino Canyon reached out with owners information! They had left a note in their fee box about him being missing! They were immediately contacted & are overjoyed to know he is safe! He got out of his harness when the family came down from Phoenix last week. He survived 6 days in the mountains with all the predators!

A big thank you to our Lost and Stray Response Squad volunteers for going above & beyond getting this pup to safety, to the original posters, the rangers & Gabby for providing owners info!

He is now microchipped & will be reunited with his family later this evening! We will post updates!

One of the ways Pathways for Paws has tried to help our community is to hold dogs that are found until Pima Animal Care Center is open. They have made it very clear we can no longer do that. If we agree to hold a dog for the finder, PACC told us we are agreeing to bring that dog in to our rescue only.

PACC stated, and we quote, “most dogs are found a mile away from their home and finders call us saying they can’t make it work, but they can.” When we asked what we are supposed to tell finders, PACC stated “the community is to call dispatch for next direction.” PACC has even told us, in person, that we are to tell finders to let the dog(s) go.

The conversation became very argumentative because Pathways understands everyones situation is different/limited.

Our hearts break knowing how many dogs’ lives will be jeopardized with this unsupportive decision from PACC. We believed as Animal Welfare Advocates and being a rescue, that our partnership with PACC was more than just pulling dogs from their facility. Unfortunately, we can not help as many community members as we have with this new barrier in place.

Going forward, if you find a dog, we recommend the following:
- post to Facebook, pawboost, hang fliers, go door-to-door, complete a found report with PACC
- Call PACC dispatch: 520-724-5900, Option 3, Option 1
- Send Pathways a picture of the dog(s) you’ve found, location they were found & we can do a courtesy post or send to our Lost and Stray Response Squad to see if they recognize the found dog(s)

PACCs business hours are:
- Monday-Friday: 12pm-7pm (intake stops at 6:15pm)
- Saturday and Sunday: 10am-5pm (intake stops at 4:15pm)

We would love to hear our communities suggestions on how to better serve the lost & found dog population!

Update: she is at PACC

A concerned samaritan posted about this injured dog earlier today. PACC dispatch was called but they were unsuccessful in getting her.

The samaritan kept an eye on the dog all day & a couple of our squad members were able to respond & help humanely trap her.

She has some serious open wounds & has since been taken to VCA where our volunteers were told they will keep her stable through the night & she will be transported to PACC in the morning.

Big thank you to everyone involved! If this is your dog, please follow up with PACC!

UPDATE: mama has a huge abscess on her belly that is bleeding & will be receiving medical attention.

Pathways for Paws was tagged multiple times on many posts to help this family! Pathways reached out to our volunteers who wasted no time & headed to the location.

They found all 9 puppies & they were covered in ticks. They immediately started bottle feeding/doing fluids while they tried for the mom. After some time, they were able to humanely trap her & get her back with her puppies. There was another female in the area they were able to humanely trap as well!

Thank you to everyone involved with this rescue! It takes the whole community!

🚨 PLEASE SPAY & NEUTER YOUR PETS 🚨

Pathways for Paws did not have a foster available, so the family & the other female went to PACC. If anyone is interested in helping, please contact PACC!

This pup has been seen wandering for around month. He traveled to different areas around the Tech Park, Rita ranch & Wilmot areas. On 6/22/22, our Lost & Stray squad members were able to locate him at a construction site thanks to a found post on Facebook!

They were able to spend time earning his trust & making friends. He was very unsure of the leash so they set the humane trap & thankfully it went off with a hitch!

If you recognize him or know who’s missing him, please contact PACC.

Thank you to the community members for their sightings & posts & to our dedicated squad 🐾
