Fred Bears Commandments:

• Don’t step on anything you can step over.

•Don’t look for deer, look for movement, and remember it’s what they’re looking for, too.

•Always approach from downwind. In the cool of the day, move uphill; in the heat of the day, move downhill.

•The best camouflage pattern is called, “Sit down and be quiet!” Your grandpa hunted deer in a red plaid coat. Think about that for a second.

•Take only the gear to the field that allows you to hunt longer, harder, smarter.

•A rainstorm isn’t a reason to quit the hunt; it’s a reason to stay.

•Camouflage your appearance, your sound and your scent.

•Be sure of your shot. Nothing is more expensive than regret.

•Hunt where the deer actually are, not where you’d imagine them to be.

•Next year’s hunt begins the minute after this season’s hunt ends.

(Not actually written by Fred, but great advice anyway!)

FYI , something I didn’t know; no mink oil on these type boots. The animal fat migrates thought the leather and can cause separation behind the rand. It can cause the adhesive to fail. Maybe this is common knowledge but I didn’t know. Stay warm on the December hunts.

Had someone ask about caping the face. Protect Eyelids , go deep on the tear ducts ( especially Muleys), back to front on the mouth until you reach the lips, go inside and far up to avoid cutting the lips. Better cape , better mount. Good luck this year!

Hunting contributes with 20 billion ZAR / 1.2 billion USD annually to the South African economy. Most of the turnover comes from domestic hunters and it's a growing industry.

So, belly up, pour yourself a glass of something good and take mental notes as we look at one of history’s most famous tiger hunters. Over...

BREAKING NEWS: Congress proposes trophy import ban.

Despite last year’s defeat of the Section 436 defacto trophy ban, the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, which was released yesterday, includes Section 439 – the same anti-hunting language.

Current language in Section 439 of the bill would place an effective BAN on the import of elephant or lion trophies from Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Neither the hunting regulations in these countries nor conservation status of these species warrant a defacto trophy ban, and the decision to place restrictions is seemingly random and based solely on emotions.

Congress should NOT pass a bill that ignores science, damages rural African communities, hurts conservation, and negatively impacts biodiversity.

Put the following into your Vocabulary.

Savé River Conservancy is a model of wildlife conservation. It’s 1,150 sq miles of interconnected private game reserves, government land and communities - that’s almost 736,000 acres.

Under an incredible team called Anti-Poaching Tracking specialists they have a biological growth rate of rhinos of 7% (IUCN recommendation is 5%) and more impressively have maintained a poaching mortality of less than 2%!

Savé alone holds more than 25% of Zimbabwe’s black rhino population (1 of 9 critical strongholds for Rhinos in Africa). The Anti-Poaching team has arrested 29 poachers accumulating a total of 189 years of prison sentencing for it.

Savé is a blend of all the tools for wildlife conservation - ecotourism and hunting including private, government, and community involvement. Hunting is absolutely necessary cog for this important resource and place to continue being in existence.

I recently had a conversation with a very nice lady in Prescott Az. Things went onto Africa and wildlife. I said make no mistake the elephant is the “ king of the jungle”. She said “ I’d like to think elephants don’t have a mean bone in their body”. 😳

In Zimbabwe, 60 people have been killed by elephants since the start of 2022, the government announced on Tuesday.

You spent time, money, blood, sweat and sometimes tears… a clean trophy will out last the unkept one by decades. During the “off season” keep you mounts preserved. Hit the small spots, keep those areas disturbed so dust mites and other unwanted “critters” will stay away. Cowboy magic works well on the hair and horns (spray the rag not the mount) cowboy magic will make your floor slick as ice. A dry Q-tip for the eyes. Hope this helps. This is a good time to remember the hunts and thank the Lord for those times.
