Anatomy of the Equine

Anatomy of the Equine www.anatomy-of-the-equine.com is a photographic journey throughout the horse. The horse is a complex, intriguing animal.

Anatomy of the Equine is the unraveling of this complexity, a quest to understand the horse from the ground up. As hoof care providers, we have sought to understand what diagnostic tools do not show. For instance, why does the external hoof not always reflect the soundness of the horse? A comprehensive understanding of what is deep inside the hoof is critical. Without it, we are often only making

assumptions. To help farriers, veterinarians and informed horse owners, we created a bridge between "book" anatomy and the living breathing horse. By using a variety of modalities to learn the anatomy of horses including carefully dissecting, diligently photographing and then identifying all of the structures; this allows us to visualize and understand the inter- relationship between the structures. We welcome sharing our photographic journeys and collaborating with other professionals providing photos for scientific journals, veterinary lectures, textbooks and more. The Anatomy-of-the-Equine photos unravel some of the mystery of lameness, injuries and day-to-day care. We look forward to collaborating with professionals in every field. If you're interested, there is a wonderful opportunity to see more of my work. I am giving 2 webinars through progressivehoofcare.org. The first is on April 14 and the second on April 21. If you can't make those dates, the webinars will be recorded and you will have 2 weeks to watch them.

Part 1 is titled Connecting the Dots. I've put together some of my favorite images hoping I can help you gain a greater understanding of the placement, texture and function of structures within the hoof capsule. My ultimate goal is to help you realize what happens to these tissues when the hoof is distorted.

Part 2 is The Journey of the Palmar Digital Nerve. It includes stunning images of the nerve as I follow its progression deep within the hoof capsule. Unlike the anatomy book sketches, I will show you specific placement and the relationship to the hoof capsule. You will see how this tiny nerve could possibly impact your work and cause horses to be lame. This is my personal favorite!!!!! The images are so impactful and deepened my own understanding, probably more than any of my other work.

Go to the events calendar at progressivehoofcare.org and sign up for one or both of the webinars.

Have a couple of webinars coming up April 14 and 21 through PHCP.

Sincere apologies to those who are waiting for our new Hoof Distortion, Exploring Laminitis and Tendons and Ligaments books. The printers had a major power outage which delayed delivery but we finally have them :) and we will be shipping them out tomorrow (Nov 21st 2023).

Can anyone help Jenny and I? We are editing our Exploring Laminitis book and adding some new material. We hope to get it to the printer asap!

We don’t have one thing we would love to include in this edition, a venogram of a hoof hoof with good blood flow.

Does anyone have one we can use? All identifying info will be removed. We’re happy to give credit or keep it anonymous.

We believe it will add so much to our book!

Last week, I was at the 20th International Hoof Care Summit. This year was amazing! Every year Anatomy of the Equine has had a booth at this conference, our material has been extremely well received, but this year felt special.

This year there was a steady stream of people stopping by to tell me how useful our books are and to thank us for making communication so much easier. Our sales were great; we sold more than we could bring to the conference. Look at the pile of books I'm having to mail. This is only half, there was more sent yesterday!

Eleven years ago, Jenny Edwards and I had the crazy idea to put together tiny little anatomy books. Little did we know just how much the industry wanted and would appreciate our work!

Watching Robbie Miller and the other Hall of Fame inductees acceptance speeches was touching and made me reflect on how wonderful the hoof care/farrier community has been to us. I'm proud and grateful that a 'barefoot trimmer' is embraced by the farrier world. Twenty something years ago, I would have never imaged that my picture would be used on the American Farriers Asso. booth. It is an honor that the industry knows and acknowledges my commitment to education and learning.

Thank you!
