Lois's Story 💜
"I began volunteering with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in December 2018 as a dog walker. Initially, I was scared, intimidated, and overwhelmed by the loud barking, excitability, and strength of the dogs. I decided to take a break, but after a few weeks, I felt compelled to return. I told myself, "For goodness' sake, Lois, put your big girl pants on and get back to the dogs! They need you!"
Eventually, I became more comfortable with the dogs and wondered why I had ever left. A few years later, I joined the SDOT program (Special Dogs of Tucson), transporting dogs from the main campus to the Thrift Store twice weekly. This program has helped place approximately 80 dogs into loving homes over the last two years.
Through this work, I've developed greater empathy for both humans and dogs and met many wonderful people who’ve adopted life-changing dogs. The Thrift Store has also been rewarding, offering positive energy and great finds. I recently decorated my new home with beautiful items from the store. I look forward to continuing this work for many years."

Community helping community 💜 Last week, HSSA took part in Energize Douglas, a lively monthly street event that brings people together to celebrate culture and have fun. During the event, we served over 60 families and gathered valuable feedback on what the Douglas community needs most. We were able to provide essentials like cat and dog food, pet toys, leashes, collars, tick and flea prevention, pet beds, and wet dog food. We’re thrilled to have been able to support the Douglas community and are excited to attend future Energize Douglas events! A big shout-out to PetSmart Charities for giving us the resources to help our rural communities!

Do we give up our workspaces for our shelter dogs? Absolutely! 😍 For those curious about what a day in the life of an office dog entails, this sums it up perfectly. Meet Peter Parker, one of our long-stay residents with special needs—he's deaf, but that doesn’t stop him from being an incredible companion. Peter has already mastered some sign language commands and continues to work hard to learn more every day. After a lively play session with his favorite stuffed toys, Peter decided it was time for a well-deserved rest. His choice for a nap spot? None other than the walking treadmill at our Chief of Development and Marketing’s desk! And doesn’t he look perfectly content and cozy there? It's just one of the many perks of office life for our beloved pups. 🥰🐶

📢 Attention!! 📢 We have a super sweet headed your way! Are you ready? Here is HSSA Alumni, Athea now Bailey, living her best life!! 😍 Here is what her mom had to say about how she's doing in her forever home:
"I have an update on Bailey (formerly Althea). We brought her home 12/18/23 and kept her separated from the other cats in the beginning with the plan to introduce her slowly. She had been bounced around several times from home to shelter, home to shelter. I was determined to finally give her a forever home. However, our cat Alli was not ok with it, at all. After the point that we started to let them see each other, but kept them separated with a 5’ gate, Alli jumped the gate to fight Bailey. It was vicious and drew blood, but it was superficial. That was very depressing as I had to consider that we may not be able to keep her.
Pretty much had my vet on speed dial for constant advice and he even said that some cats will never get along. Not wanting to give up, my son and I started keeping Bailey in his room at night and Alli in his room during the day. Alli is highly dependent on her sense of smell, so the hope was that she would be forced to spend hours around Bailey’s scent and hopefully she would accept her that way. The first couple months (yes, months) they were very aggressive still in passing when we would switch them out. I started feeding them their evening wet food in the hallway so they could see each other and hopefully associate it with something positive. Slowly I noticed progress. In passing, they would sniff each other’s faces and no growling, just a little hissing. Then one day Alli finished her food, then walked up to Bailey and finished her food and Bailey let her. They are not friends yet, but they are learning to live with each other. We still have Bailey in my son’s room at night for now, maybe forever as she seems to claim that as her space. 8 months to get to this point, 8 months! It can be done. 😻"
We are so happy to hear Bailey is doing so great in her loving home and that she and Alli are adjusting to one another and we agree, it can be done! What a beautiful update! Happy tails Bailey! 🐾
