The name Lou is short for many things. Today it’s short for Lou-cifer. He hasn’t done this in a long time but early this morning just after sunrise, Volunteer Pam found Lou with his head stuck in a corral panel. Luckily Kelly had it covered. She cut the bar on a perfectly good corral panel and got his head out. That’s how we started our day at Old Souls. Antics from Lou. How did you start your day?

Our house chicken Gertrude is doing great despite the fact that her legs don’t work. Physical therapy has not had any impact on her. But as long as she is happy and otherwise healthy, we will keep working at getting her legs to be functional again.

If you are interested in building Gertrude a wheelchair, please let me know! And if you are interested in supporting her care, please log onto www.givebutter.com/oldsoulsfeelgoodfund. Thank you!

Generosity gives everyone the power to make a positive change in the lives of others and is a fundamental human value anyone can act on. Generosity comes in many forms, not just money. Consider volunteering your time at Old Souls and get to know some our residents like T'uuwa who came from a hoarding situation, half starved and living in her own waste. Today she is thriving at Old Souls with her two daughters, N'dari and Akinyi. All three are available for foster or adoption!

If you are short on time, you can always make a monetary donation and know that it is spent on caring for the 94 geriatric, special needs, and hospice animals that call Old Souls home. Check out www.oldsouls.org/donate to see all the ways you can make a difference this holiday season!

We made it through Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, and now we are finally at !!! Giving Tuesday is a day that encourages people to do good in the world by supporting nonprofit organizations that positively impact their communities.

Did you know that Old Souls takes in some of the most challenging geriatric, special needs, and hospice animals from Pima Animal Care Center here in Tucson? We also help people in our community and their geriatric, special needs, and hospice pets to stay together as a family when facing crises.

Old Souls spends about $3,500 per month on food, medicine, supplements, and supplies to support the care of the 94 animals in our rescue. This does not include vet care which can range from $500 to $4000 in any given month. Old Souls pays no rent and no utilities and has no paid staff so all donations go directly toward animal care and facility maintenance to ensure the animals' health and safety.

You can support Old Souls' mission of rescuing geriatric, special needs, and hospice animals by making a tax deductible donation today at www.givebutter.com/oldsoulsfeelgoodfund. Let's make this Giving Tuesday our best yet to ensure that the last chapter of life for every animal at Old Souls is the best chapter!

Humberto is one of 20 roosters that live here at Old Souls. Unfortunately, none of them can tell time so instead of crowing at sunrise, they crow all day … and all night. Good thing he’s so handsome!

Have you ever thought of fostering or adopting goats? We have 7 goats available at Old Souls for foster or adoption! We will teach you everything you need to know about caring for them. Take home 2 or 3 and enjoy the fun of watching them play in your yard (make sure you are zoned to have them!). It’s better than watching TV!

Contact us if you are interested in fostering or adopting some very special goats. They came from a cruelty situation where they were starved and not housed properly. All are 2-4 years old, and the one male goat in the herd is neutered.

Gertrude’s legs seem to be getting weaker so I decided that we need to work on her bucket list. Yesterday we went to brunch with her aunties Lauren and Kat, and then we went to an artist market at the museum. It was so much fun, and she met so many new people. I really hope we are able to keep her alive and well long enough for her physical therapy to start working. We could really use a chicken wheelchair to keep her upright. You can donate one to us by purchasing a small one from chickentherapychairs (https://chickentherapychairs.weebly.com/) and having it shipped to us! Or you can find lots of examples on Pinterest if you want to build one for her. Please let us know if you are able to help buy or make us a wheelchair for Gertrude. Your donations are always welcome at www.givebutter.com/oldsoulsfeelgoodfund.

Orange boy cats are the best! So sweet and so affectionate. Whiskers’ mom passed away leaving him and his brother cat to find a new home. Only days later when the two boys were scheduled yo come to Old Souls, Whiskers’ brother also passed away. Whiskers was scared, sad, and confused.

Months later Whiskers is now doing great, aside from a small eye infection that we have not been able to resolve yet. He gets along with other cats and dogs, he’s a good eater, and he is obsessed with laying on electronics that I am trying to use. He’s perfect.

Whiskers is only 12 years old so he has many years of life left in him. He would love to go to a foster home while Old Souls continues to provide treatment for his eye, and he would love it even more if his foster family adopts him!

Message us if you are interested in fostering or adopting Whiskers!

Our Story

Old Souls Animal Rescue and Retirement Home is a 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue founded to give geriatric and hospice animals a dignified end of life surrounded by love.

It's hard to imagine, but many animals are abandoned in their old age because they require more intensive care and are no longer playful and youthful. At Old Souls Animal Rescue and Retirement Home, we seek out these forgotten geriatric and special needs animals, particularly those who are within weeks or months of going to the Rainbow Bridge. We feel that after all they have been through, after all the loyalty they have shown their owners despite how they may have been treated, they deserve a dignified end of life in which they feel loved, comforted, and special. When animals come to Old Souls, they spend their time resting on orthopedic beds, eating delicious healthy food (sometimes homemade!), taking just enough medicine to keep them comfortable, and sharing their lives with other old dogs, cats, tortoises, pigs, horses, rabbits, and even chickens. They truly become part of a loving family, many times for the first time in their lives. Thanks to our specially made doggy doors that leads to grassy backyard areas, dogs, cats, and pigs of all sizes can let themselves in and out whenever they choose without navigating steps or having to push on a door. They also have a toy box full of stuffed animals, balls, and chew toys (for those who still have teeth!). We spend quality time with every individual animal every day so for at least a little while each day, each animal feels like they are our only animal.

Foster homes are critical for our rescue, especially forever foster homes - the more fosters we have, the more animals we can rescue. Sometimes when animals come to us, they live for only a few days, but other times, they surprise us and live well beyond their expected years. There are no cages at our rescue - everyone has the run of the house (although there's not much running!). They lounge on the couch, sleep in our bed, and sun themselves in the yard whenever they like. While rescuing these animals always results in tears, we believe that no old animal should have to die alone and scared in a shelter or homeless on the streets, so we give them the dignified end of life they deserve ... and in return they give us endless happiness and incredible memories of their loyal loving spirits.

We are a volunteer-run 501c3 non-profit organization, and we run the rescue out of our home. Paula works full-time for the University of Arizona to keep a roof over the heads of our Old Souls, and to keep some human food on our table, and Isaac works 24 hours a day (literally most days) as our Director of Operations for no paycheck, and without vacations, holidays, and sometimes even without a thank you from anyone. He manages vet visits, volunteers, cleaning, feeding ... you name it! We have volunteers for a few hours each day, and we are incredibly grateful for their help!
