We are CONVINCED we have the only cat in the world with ten lives.

Not only has RuthE been returned to the shelter three times in ten years, she’s survived eye surgery and has been diagnosed with cystitis, gingivitis, stomatitis, an oral mass in her mouth, chronic GI issues…she may even have pancreatitis!

And yet, here she still is, running everything as the H.B.I.C. (Head Bosscat in Charge) at Old Souls Animal Rescue. Someone’s gotta keep these geriatric, special needs, and hospice dogs in line!

She might swat food out of your hands for fun and act like litter boxes don’t exist, but she also cuddles up to dogs and humans like she’s trying to earn her spot in heaven. Honestly? We like her chances.

Every like, comment, share, and donation helps us keep saving the ones most likely to get returned to shelters due to their age or special needs, like RuthE.

Push all of the buttons for us and if you’re able to, donate through the link below or in our bio ❤️

In today’s episode of Livin the Dream, Vinny goes missing!

Mimi has stolen many hearts since she arrived at Old Souls Animal Rescue. This little pitapotamus brings joy & happiness to everyone she meets!

For those that don’t know her story, she was found abandoned in a park earlier this year, covered in tumors. No one claimed her or wanted her, so we took her in.

She found a safe home, plenty of new friends, and a job! Mimi was hired as the “Chief Happiness Specialist” at , where she provides comfort to grieving families saying goodbye to their beloved pets. She’s even featured in the Old Souls Animal Rescue coloring book!

Over the past few weeks, Mimi’s arthritis has gotten so bad that her back legs often give out. We’re trying everything - medications, Adequan injections, and mobility support to keep her comfortable and moving.

This sweet girl has spent her second chance spreading love and uplifting others.

Now it’s our turn to lift her up 💪

Like, comment, and share this post to help us get her story out to more people. If you’re able to, you can donate to her care through the link in our bio (or below).

Remember this sweet senior dog we rescued from Texas who was only given months to live?

Gertrude’s animal rescue story just took an unbelievable turn…watch till the end and share this video!

12-year-old Gertrude came to us from Texas a couple of weeks ago and was considered hospice with what was believed to be a massive mammary tumor. What we uncovered this weekend changed EVERYTHING.

We found out she had not one, but TWO inguinal hernias. She also had pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection that required emergency surgery.

The good news? Her emergency surgery was a success - she doesn’t have cancer and is no longer considered hospice! She even has a potential adopter and may be going to her forever home once she’s fully recovered. We are forever grateful to for being the BEST foster to this sweet girl!

The not-so good news? Even with a generous discount from our vet partner, this emergency surgery put us out $2800. We’re still trying to get our AC fully fixed, and have other senior dogs like Mimi and RuthE who need urgent care right now.

You can help us with just a few clicks - like, comment some words of encouragement for our senior girls, and share this post!

If you’re able to and feel so inclined, you can also donate to help us cover the cost of Gertrude’s life-saving surgery through the link below and in our bio (make sure you do so in honor of Gertrude!)

Together, we can help more geriatric, special needs, and hospice rescue animals the second chances they deserve ❤️

After our Pet Remembrance Day event at Old Souls, Little Mama left us for the Bridge. She was the first dog that I pulled from Pima Animal Care Center after I moved back to Tucson from Texas. She was quite the round little girl so we started hiking in Tucson Mountain Park to get some of her weight off. But I use the term hiking loosely - she walked a bit and I carried her a lot.

I didn’t have anywhere to live when I pulled Littlest of the Mamas from the shelter bc Old Souls was still in Texas. I also didn’t have any animals with me in Tucson. So it was just me and her together for a long time. I have never had just one dog! So Blanche eventually joined us and we moved into our good friend Lisa’s house as a roommate until I found a place for Old Souls to live.

Little Mama lived at Old Souls for almost four years. As she got older, her physique resembled a stick figure and she walked like a poorly handled puppet on a string with her knees constantly out of position and facing every direction except front. Her dementia was quite advanced by the time she left us, but in a funny way. Every room of the house was an exciting new adventure bc she had never seen it before.

Little Mama snuggled and snored and cuddled and ate like a champion even though she had no teeth. She was the boss even though she was tiny and never growled or complained. She was abuelita (Gramdma) to all of the other animals, and she shared her bed and food freely with them. I almost never heard her bark, yet she said so much. I still look for her every day. Rest peacefully my sweet girl. Mama loves you.

In today’s episode of Livin the Dream, Wynston continues to try to make a baby with Eneko while Eneko digs to China in our sand pile, which is now spread out because of a WWE match with Eneko, Ama, Wynston, N’dogo, and Vinny.

In this morning's episode of Livin The Dream, I get shaken down by a tortoise in the kitchen.

In tonight's episode of Livin The Dream, the shelves in our cabinets came crashing down making a huge mess of flours and grains, and causing me to cook risotto for the chickens. And we forgot the feed the pigs.

When I asked for help folding the laundry, this isn’t exactly what I meant.

In today’s episode of Livin the Dream, Wynston tries to make a baby with Eneko while Vinny and N’dogo are trying to start their own version of WWE. This is supposed to be a hospice rescue! We are never going to get grant funding with these shenanigans happening every morning.

Our Story

Old Souls Animal Rescue and Retirement Home is a 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue founded to give geriatric and hospice animals a dignified end of life surrounded by love.

It's hard to imagine, but many animals are abandoned in their old age because they require more intensive care and are no longer playful and youthful. At Old Souls Animal Rescue and Retirement Home, we seek out these forgotten geriatric and special needs animals, particularly those who are within weeks or months of going to the Rainbow Bridge. We feel that after all they have been through, after all the loyalty they have shown their owners despite how they may have been treated, they deserve a dignified end of life in which they feel loved, comforted, and special. When animals come to Old Souls, they spend their time resting on orthopedic beds, eating delicious healthy food (sometimes homemade!), taking just enough medicine to keep them comfortable, and sharing their lives with other old dogs, cats, tortoises, pigs, horses, rabbits, and even chickens. They truly become part of a loving family, many times for the first time in their lives. Thanks to our specially made doggy doors that leads to grassy backyard areas, dogs, cats, and pigs of all sizes can let themselves in and out whenever they choose without navigating steps or having to push on a door. They also have a toy box full of stuffed animals, balls, and chew toys (for those who still have teeth!). We spend quality time with every individual animal every day so for at least a little while each day, each animal feels like they are our only animal.

Foster homes are critical for our rescue, especially forever foster homes - the more fosters we have, the more animals we can rescue. Sometimes when animals come to us, they live for only a few days, but other times, they surprise us and live well beyond their expected years. There are no cages at our rescue - everyone has the run of the house (although there's not much running!). They lounge on the couch, sleep in our bed, and sun themselves in the yard whenever they like. While rescuing these animals always results in tears, we believe that no old animal should have to die alone and scared in a shelter or homeless on the streets, so we give them the dignified end of life they deserve ... and in return they give us endless happiness and incredible memories of their loyal loving spirits.

We are a volunteer-run 501c3 non-profit organization, and we run the rescue out of our home. Paula works full-time for the University of Arizona to keep a roof over the heads of our Old Souls, and to keep some human food on our table, and Isaac works 24 hours a day (literally most days) as our Director of Operations for no paycheck, and without vacations, holidays, and sometimes even without a thank you from anyone. He manages vet visits, volunteers, cleaning, feeding ... you name it! We have volunteers for a few hours each day, and we are incredibly grateful for their help!
