The Colorado River Toad, a monsoon mainstay in southern Arizona, is toxic and can kill a dog just as easily as a rattlesnake.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but:

Silver labs
Charcoal labs
English cream goldens
Merle cavaliers
Merle poodles
Any Merle where it isn’t a recognized breed standard color.
Blue eyed cavaliers
Solid black cavaliers
‘Mini’ Golden Retrievers
Toy Aussie

Aren’t actual breeds 😬 They are not recognized by the AKC because other breeds were used to achieve the color. Typically Weimaraner is used to get a silver or charcoal lab (https://www.thelabradorclub.com/the-issue-of-the-silver-lab?fbclid=IwAR1Jjxf0mh7DjpSMcBNfa4-b2-V9uGy0XNflRFM3ATvnO49YpguwKHAUgn0 ) and Great Pyrenees is used to get a mostly white English cream golden. That’s why you see many huge English cream goldens and silver labs with atypical lab bodies. (Note that there can be light colored goldens but ‘English Cream Golden’ is NOT a breed nor is it a recognized AKC color in goldens).

Merle cavaliers or poodles have some kind of breed with Merle coloring, usually dachshund or Aussie. Same with blue eyes.

Black cavaliers *can* be natural but they are RARE. If someone is consistently breeding black cavaliers they have probably used a cocker to get the color.

A mini golden retriever is a ruby cavalier mixed with a golden. You would hope that in most cases the mom is the golden, but we have seen people cross a female ruby with a male golden, which is dangerous and unethical.

Toy aussies are not purebred aussies. They have been bred with Pomeranians or long haired chihuahua to get the smaller Aussie looking dog. (A Mini American shepherd IS AKC but if they are saying it’s a toy AUSSIE, that’s not a breed.

My point is, people pay CRAZY amounts of money to get a ‘rare’ version of the breed when really they are most likely getting a dog with another breed mixed in. Breed standards are there for a reason. If you don’t like the typical look, that’s fine but understand you may have size/coat/temperament issues you wouldn’t get with a purebred of breed standard. And know that true ethical, reputable breeders don’t breed these off colors because they are keeping the breed lines pure. The breeders who sell them are usually more in it for the money than bettering the breed. There is a huge issue when health tested purebred dogs from reputable breeders are being sold for 3x LESS than a mutt!

Also a ‘teacup cavalier’ is not a thing. Breed standard is 12-18 lbs. If the breeder is consistently breeding cavaliers under 12 lbs, they have been downsizing the breed, which usually means inbreeding to get the consistent smaller size. And the smaller size increases health issues. Cavaliers heads are already too small for their brains, which can cause SM/CM. Many of the super small cavaliers have shorter muzzles (possibly they’ve had English toy introduced into the line) causing respiratory issues. Joint issues can be worse too.

So do your research and know that the latest ‘craze’ might not be the best thing if you’re looking at specific traits in a breed.

Also: yes some of these colors *can* be natural. But they are rare. So when people are breeding non standard colors repeatedly they are either breeding 2 dilute gene carriers together or they have mixed another color in the line to consistently get the off color.

This is a beautiful letter from Fiona Apple explaining to her fans why she must postpone a concert date. Just…WOW….I am flooded with emotions…here is what she says:

It's 6pm on Friday, and I'm writing to a few thousand friends I have not met yet. I'm writing to ask them to change our plans and meet a little while later.

Here's the thing.
I have a dog, Janet, and she's been ill for about 2 years now, as a tumor has been idling in her chest, growing ever so slowly. She's almost 14 years old now. I got her when she was 4 months old. I was 21 then — an adult, officially — and she was my kid.
She is a pitbull, and was found in Echo Park, with a rope around her neck, and bites all over her ears and face.
She was the one the dogfighters use to puff up the confidence of the contenders.
She's almost 14 and I've never seen her start a fight, or bite, or even growl, so I can understand why they chose her for that awful role. She's a pacifist.
Janet has been the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact. We've lived in numerous houses, and joined a few makeshift families, but it's always really been just the two of us.
She slept in bed with me, her head on the pillow, and she accepted my hysterical, tearful face into her chest, with her paws around me, every time I was heartbroken, or spirit-broken, or just lost, and as years went by, she let me take the role of her child, as I fell asleep, with her chin resting above my head.
She was under the piano when I wrote songs, barked any time I tried to record anything, and she was in the studio with me, all the time we recorded the last album.
The last time I came back from tour, she was spry as ever, and she's used to me being gone for a few weeks, every 6 or 7 years.
She has Addison's Disease, which makes it more dangerous for her to travel, since she needs regular injections of Cortisol, because she reacts to stress and excitement without the physiological tools which keep most of us from literally panicking to death.
Despite all this, she's effortlessly joyful & playful, and only stopped acting like a puppy about 3 years ago. She is my best friend, and my mother, and my daughter, my benefactor, and she's the one who taught me what love is.
I can't come to South America. Not now. When I got back from the last leg of the US tour, there was a big, big difference.
She doesn't even want to go for walks anymore.
I know that she's not sad about aging or dying. Animals have a survival instinct, but a sense of mortality and vanity, they do not. That's why they are so much more present than people.
But I know she is coming close to the time where she will stop being a dog, and start instead to be part of everything. She'll be in the wind, and in the soil, and the snow, and in me, wherever I go.
I just can't leave her now, please understand. If I go away again, I'm afraid she'll die and I won't have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out.
Sometimes it takes me 20 minutes just to decide what socks to wear to bed.
But this decision is instant.
These are the choices we make, which define us. I will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love & friendship.
I am the woman who stays home, baking Tilapia for my dearest, oldest friend. And helps her be comfortable & comforted & safe & important.
Many of us these days, we dread the death of a loved one. It is the ugly truth of Life that keeps us feeling terrified & alone. I wish we could also appreciate the time that lies right beside the end of time. I know that I will feel the most overwhelming knowledge of her, and of her life and of my love for her, in the last moments.
I need to do my damnedest, to be there for that.
Because it will be the most beautiful, the most intense, the most enriching experience of life I've ever known.
When she dies.
So I am staying home, and I am listening to her snore and wheeze, and I am revelling in the swampiest, most awful breath that ever emanated from an angel. And I'm asking for your blessing.
I'll be seeing you.
Love,
Fiona

Good news for Labs!

Good news for Labs!

WE DID IT!! Genetic testing for risk of cruciate ligament rupture in the Labrador Retriever is here.

Cruciate ligament rupture is a common problem in several popular breeds including the Labrador Retriever, Rottweiler, and Newfoundland, equivalent to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in human beings. We have been working on this study for many years and are now exceptionally pleased to announce the availability of a genetic screening test for risk of cruciate ligament rupture in Labradors. This is a marker-based risk test because cruciate ligament rupture is influenced by changes in many different genes and is different from most genetic testing in dogs. For more information about this test, it’s value and information about this disease, please visit:

https://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/lab/corl/canine-genetic-testing/

We are extremely grateful to the community that we work with for supporting this endeavor. Please look out for future updates on progress with this program, as we are now focusing effort on extending this cruciate ligament rupture genetic testing to other high-risk breeds including the Rottweiler and the Newfoundland.

Availability of genetic testing.
We are currently setting up this genetic testing service at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison. We anticipate the cost of the marker-based risk test will be ~$250. We welcome expressions of interest or questions about this important development in the Comparative Genetics and Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Please email us if you are interested in getting your Labrador Retriever tested.

These photos speak volumes ❤️
I had the opportunity to see Ivan Balabanov at a National Trial many years ago. Incredible experience. One I will never forget!

Over the last three days I have had the honor to capture the highest level of Malinois IGP in the world at the 2022 FMBB in Karpenenisi, Greece.
Perhaps nothing has touched me more than this. Ivan Balabanov (USA-5) is a two time world champion. I have photographed him many times and always enjoy seeing the relationship he has with his dogs. He never shouts comands and his handling is smooth and in harmony with his dog. His dogs always to love their work, more, they love to work for him.
But today I saw a different side to Ivan. As Jessica and I were pulling into a tucked away restaurant in a small villiage section of Kapranesi hillside I thought I saw Ivan walking down an narrow ally way with what looked like a pizza box. I walked after him to see if I could catch up and say hello and was stunned to see him feeding kibble and raw dogfood to a starving mother dog. Ivan was clearly distraught. My heart sunk seeing the condition and circumstance of this poor creature but at the same time my heart swelled seeing Ivan's display of humanity.
The top picture is earlier today in the stadium, the bottom picture late this afternoon. The world needs more people like Ivan.

Believe me when I say this: if you have a pet with cancer and/or trying to prevent cancer & you don't have 🍄mushrooms🍄 supplemented in your daily diet plan, you are missing out!!

New Study finds people who incorporated any variety of mushrooms into their daily diets had a lower risk of cancer and lived-longer!

University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine found Dogs with cancer that were treated with a mushroom compound
had the longest survival times ever reported for dogs with the disease!

FYI: Rodney Habib and I discuss the types of mushrooms and dosages in our new and upcoming book: The Forever Dog:
www.foreverdog.com🍄

Human Study:
Individuals who ate 18 grams of mushrooms — or about 1/8 to 1/4 cup — daily had a 45% lower risk of cancer compared to those who did not eat mushrooms.

This is something everyone should see.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

ARE LAUNDRY CHEMICALS AFFECTING YOUR PETS’ SKIN & HEALTH?

If you wash your pet blankets and beds using popular fabric softeners and dryer sheets, that “just washed” fresh smell comes from chemicals called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that can negatively impact your pets’ health (coughing, rashy, itchy pets, anyone?).

Dr. Anne Steinmann’s UW-Seattle research team found more than 25 VOCs emitted from dryer vents using these products, including well-known respiratory irritants like Acetone, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, but also Pentane (which causes skin rashes and upset stomach), Ethyl Acetate (on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list; causes anemia, changes in white blood cells and can damage the liver and kidneys), Benzyl Acetate (can be absorbed through the skin and is linked to pancreas problems) and Alpha-terpineol (causes headaches and nervous system disorders).

Our pets can do without having to breathe in these chemical residues or having to lay on them, so here’s our Forever Dog Tip of the day: replace chemical-laden fabric softeners with a non-toxic DIY option!

Recipe: Mix 6 cups white vinegar with 1 cup baking soda, let it fizz. When the fizz stops, pour mixture into a large glass container with a lid. Use 1 cup per load of laundry.

We highlight all of the of home chemical risks that can negatively impact your dog’s health in the The Forever Dog book, available now for pre-order by clicking here: https://foreverdog.com/about/ -window
