RB Guppies & Shrimp

RB Guppies & Shrimp I breed multiple varieties of guppies and neocaridina shrimp.

All my animals are raised in tap water so that they'll adapt to the average keeper's parameters more easily.

Over 20 mutts went to their permanent home yesterday! Their new owner wanted a bulk amount for her cycled but empty 60 gallon tank so I sold one bag of inch long uns*xed fry and another with 7 young adult males. It's beyond rewarding to raise these babies until they're ready to find their forever home ❀️

I threw in some moss and a few rotala rotundifolia cuttings as a surprise πŸ˜‰

After my initial batch of kohaku fry were all eaten overnight* I went to an aquatics club auction and brought home a ton of plants for all of my tanks. I've discovered red root floaters under LED lighting are PERFECT for concealing blonde fry!

Guppy fry are born knowing anti-predation tactics and this group is doing it so well I won't be able to count them until they are large enough to emerge. I hope their mama gave me a lot ☺️

* = I decided raising them in a breeder box was inferior when I saw how much quicker my purple dragons left with their parents were growing and coloring up. To me the benefit of them having lots of grazing opportunities outweighs the chance of losses. Regardless the kohakus are my only variety who love eating their babies πŸ˜‘

Comment if you spot the fry! 🐟

Did you know that the red-head gene in guppies frequently causes them to develop a little bump on their nose when they reach maturity?

I haven't noticed it in my males so it very well may be s*x linkedβ€”we'll see when I have more boys grow up!

It doesn't harm them in any way and, from what I've read, isn't considered a defect. I personally find it cute. What do you think? 😊

This first batch of kohaku fry came as a complete surprise! Yesterday I woke up to the juveniles & adults chasing something little and realized they were fry 🀦 I hastily set their breeder box up (which thankfully only took connecting some tubing since I've used it before) and caught 6 of them, then 2 more throughout the day

This morning I caught an additional 2 for a total of 10! I'm not sure if the 2 today were just hiding really well yesterday or if the mama dropped a couple more overnight

Most are readily eating fry food, some are slower learners πŸ˜…

Being only six months into keeping guppies, I'm not very good at being able to tell when a female is breeding age/size since I'm on my first generation reaching that point

When I was catching my kohakus to move them from their temporary tank to their permanent home, I found a random tiny blonde fry. I thought it had hitchhiked from my mutt tank somehow, but it turns out one of my girls must have mated before (I didn't have any males at the time) despite them looking too little to me, because the fry is definitely a kohaku*

* = I'm certain because the red head gene, from the research I've done, only appears if the parents both visibly have it. All the yellow areas on this fish will turn orange, and the tail already has a bit but it didn't show up in the photo

Should I name one of the kohakus Mary...? πŸ˜‚

I've decided to switch from fire reds to bloody marys. Read on if you'd like to know the interesting differences between them!

They are both neocaridina davidi, but each line descended from a different wild ancestor. Theirs was a more brown shrimp, hence chocolate shrimp being close to them. I've read that they actually throw brown shrimp sometimes

Their rostrums are supposed to be a tad shorter but I haven't looked closely at that yet

The coolest feature of the bloody marys is that their flesh is colored red and their shells are clear, giving them a shiny gemstone-like appearance under light. I honestly wrote them off as overrated years ago and now I see the error in my ways πŸ˜‚

Now for the fire reds: they had a reddish ancestor, their shells are red and their flesh is the regular color, and their rostrums are normal

Can you identify which one in these photos is the bloody mary and which is the fire red? πŸ‘€

A kohaku male has arrived! He's from the same breeder as my girls and they sent an additional male (fry rather than adult) as a surprise

When I was doing further research on guppy genetics I realized he technically fits the phenotype for a red flamingo. There are at least 6 different genes responsible for creating red coloration in guppies and it's been theorized that the more you combine, the more red the fish

The difference between a red flamingo and a kohaku is all in the headβ€”the red head gene, that is. Kohaku means "bicolor" so to be a kohaku the guppy must have both cream coloration and a red head/caudal fin. In the future I intend to add in my male with a full cream body for genetic diversity and to see what he produces πŸ‘€

It turns out the two fry who hitchhiked from my LFS are endlers (or endler leaning hybrids) so these cuties are getting an eviction notice. They're beautiful lively boys but I have waaay too many males to keep them. I assume they'll continue to gain tail color & size

In a couple months I'll have some tuxedo females ready to go too! Their mother was an older juvenile when I got her. I've gotten to watch her grow up and produce babies 😊

Tuxedo is a versatile gene that adds extra beauty to compatible lines.* Take a look at tuxedo koi guppies on Google sometime πŸ‘€

* = I would not recommend mixing mine with pure strains unless you wait a few generations/isolate them from other mutts because they could be carrying random recessive genetics

The first batch of guppies I ever produced are now 3 months old. While they aren't completely developed I'm able to determine all their phenotypes now:

1. Baby Oedipus - male - grey - snakeskin - mix of black markings, blue and green iridescence on body with a spot of red and a yellow tail with red on the edges - appears he will have a lyre tail*
2. Male - grey - same pattern & colors as above - tail indeterminate
3. Male - grey - identical to above
4. Male - grey - thickly striped body with a greenish blue front end and yellow back end, bright yellow orange and black tail, hasn't finished developing color*
5. Female - grey - mosaic tail, developing color*
6. Female - grey - developing snakeskin body*
7. Female - blonde - yellow body, tail has black ring at the base, will later shift to different color*

Also, I had a 100% survival rate. Not bad for a first timer! 😏

Photo below is of the 4th guppy and his only blonde sibling. They (and the others marked with an asterisk) are holdbacks for now
